Unrestricted and unsupervised access to YouTube for a 10/11 year old (Yr 6) - yes or no?

alot of stuff is fine but then putting a simple word in can get some very strange vids

if you have parental controls set up then yes but not unrestricted (my DD1 is the same age and quite grown up but not ready to see some of the stuff on there)

I'd say no. But have no idea how to restrict, if someone could tell me how I'd be really grateful. My dc's love watching horrible histories but my older son (11) has been showing them Family Guy and I'd like to stop him.
There are really nasty things to be found out there, 11 is too young for many!

DDs do have, they shouldn't Blush.
DD2 (10) likes Vevo on her iPod because it gets you the official pop video not the strange stuff.

no, even though most of the clips are fine, the COMMENTS on a lot of even the most innoncent clips can be VILE!!!

other 'friends', or 'friends of friends' walls can be vile and awful (voice of experience Shock) and absolutely not ok for younger kids.

Would only let my kids join facebook this young by insisting that they made me one of their 'friends', and told them I'd be monitoring their facebook activities (=stalking them online). They stayed pretty well behaved.

Had a bad incident though with mother of another boy who tried to tell me my youngest ds had been obscene to her son online. But because I could track all my son's activities, I soon found out what had actually happened - it was her son who was being vile, swearing, saying vile things to my son, not my son causing trouble.

I can't stand facebook, causes too much trouble and stress ime.

No to unsupervised and unrestricted internet for any child if you are a responsible adult in a position of care.
Why is it a question that needs asking?
Some level of parental control on his searches, some getting off the parental arse to check what he's doing on occasion, some monitoring of his preferred sites.
Or let him roam free and be unconcerned about the shit that he'll be wallowing in.

DS says EVERYONE in his class is allowed on YOUTUBE (please note, we are NOT discussing Facebook et al - just YouTube).

DD is Y6 and has unrestricted access through her ipod, it's not ideal but she's not come across anything awful yet-she mainly looks at showjumping stuff so maybe that's why. I would say that this is the norm amongst her friends even though I know we are on the relaxedend of the spectrum for most things.

We haven't got restrictions on YouTube (although iirc you have to have an account to view restricted videos anyway) but our PCs with internet access are in the front room and the monitors are visible to everyone so they're constantly 'supervised' anyway. DCs are 7, 11 and 13 and are more than aware that messing about with the internet will just result in them not being allowed to use it.

Good luck when he reaches 16 and is telling you everyone's parents lets their girlfriends and boyfriends stay over, and brings them breakfast in bed.Grin

No Downby, I don't believe him, hence, this thread to prove the point to him. He doesn't have access now and hell will freeze over before he gets it! Grin

SOME of the children in his class do but not all. I was hoping for a whole load of 'no' posts so he could see that the vast majority of right thinking parents DO NOT let 10 year olds "have YouTube"!

I teach Y6, and have done for six years, and I have a 16 year old.
There are no 11 year olds that I know of who have unrestricted access permitted by parents.
There are some who sneak on in the middle of the night, or when parents are out, but it isn't sanctioned.

No from me too. I have managed to deny my two internet access until now. They are 10 and 11. But I take on board the point that this is hampering their progress in IT at school. So from Christmas they will have access to a laptop, but I have installed K9 on it, on the highest settings, so You Tube will not be allowed.

I let DS (age 3) use youtube to watch Thomas videos, clips of Cars, etc. Supervised of course! You would be shocked at the amount of times he clicks on something innocent-looking and it turns out to be a dubbed, home made version of "Thomas the drugs runner" or trains running off the tracks and shouting "Ohhhhh shiiiiiiit!" or similar. Or Disney film clips set to some gangsta rap tune.

There is a website which only allows child-friendly youtube videos to be accessed, although you have to pay for it. I'll see if I can find it for you.

The kids used to tell me everyone was allowed to watch South Park. They could never introduce me to this imfamous Everyone though. A straw poll among other parents proved everyone was most definitely not allowed to watch it. I would imagine it's the same story for YouTube et al nowadays.
