What's the best wind up / solar / usb powered radio? Do not want to spend much.

Thanks

bought One off amazon that’s priced good, is also a smart speaker, great for the garage

Sunshineandrainbow · 07/09/2026 22:28

Wind up don't last very long
Would look at battery operated or usb. But I would rather use any power bank for phone charge. Guess radio can be played on phone too though.

Roberts battery radio for £22.00 at the moment.

Will that work without broadband or mast signal from mobile data? The go advice says you can listen in your car. I don't fancy that in a power cut fromm snow or storm. But want something that works on the car radio basis

Cheap Asda battery powered radio works. You need to fart about with the aerial direction but works fine once sorted.

Found the Amazon solar ones work well, until dropped from not very high! Used it in my kitchen for a couple of years. Kept it on the window sill. Did need to.fiddle about with aerial and position. Less good in the kitchen.

One that you use every day. So you know it works and is tuned in/ can be tuned in, and you are familiar with the stations.

An FM radio works on its own without broadband or mobile signal, just to clarify. It's what we had before the internet.

Wind Up Solar Radio, Survival... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08JCFCX5J?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I have this orange one in my campervan, I keep radio 2 on pretty much constantly in the van and the battery lasts for days. The radio is easy to tune and has some other features - torch and loud alarm

Well pp's seemed confused about how radios work!

CrotchetyQuaver · 11/09/2026 11:04

I've got a USB rechargeable one I use most days at the stables which is 8 years old now and still going strong. No mains electric there, it's charged via solar panel and 12v storage batteries. My DH bought it off Amazon, no fancy brand or anything.

No the OP was pointing out to the PP that suggested she could just listen on her phone that actually that was not a good suggestion because in a big power cut the phone mast goes down. IDK where you got confusion from, OP was clearly just being polite to someone who made a silly suggestion.

@Preppercorn I was honestly trying to be helpful not sarcastic, never mind, apologies if it came across snippy to you.

HoraceCope · Yesterday 10:59

My mobile has an fm phone, needs headphones to act as an aerial

Some phones do have an actual FM radio receiver - I have a tiny Nokia which does. However, I wouldn't rely on that.
Quite handy to have Short Wave and Long Wave as well as FM.
By contrast, "radio" over WiFi/Phone signal wouldn't work if the phones go down.
Satellite phones could be useful.

I've a Duronic AM/FM radio I bought on Amazon. It has a built-in rechargeable battery, as well as being able to be charged via solar power or using a wind up crank (1 min winding gives 20 mins radio time). It also has a built in torch, and you can charge it via USB cable.

This one looks good..do you use it via the solar / winding up? I had similar a few years ago and it only lasted minutes. If so I might get that too.

I have got the Bluetooth one up thread and I'm going to leave it out and use it so I'm familiar with it. That's good advice thanks

Duronic is a good brand, I got it because it was recommended by other preppers. No I haven't used the wind up or solar options. I've had it in a cupboard since 2019 lol and got it out yesterday, it still works thankfully!

😁 I think maybe we all need to have a run through of a m mockup storm and see if can find the radio, if it works and if we can find the torches and water is still in date.

My biggest danger is dh. He takes the torches to work so I have just had re buy 6 head torches!

I might but two each in different rooms then put a note somewhere of where electronic prep is. It's like starting over again!

You really need a designated place for all those things, all together. You could as you say put a list in with that. Nothing worse than trying to find stuff in the pitch dark.

Haha why does DH need head torches at work? Does he just misplace them there if he has to keep taking more? Goodness! 😂

NotPerfectlyAdverage · Today 14:11

Yes dh is as disorganised as me. He is a electrician so up in loft spaces and dark cupboards. Seems he can't keep one in his tool box. Too many tool boxes? He is sorting out a cupboard as I type. With a head torch on.....
