I don’t know why another thread hasn’t been created yet , so here you go. Now as we prep ourselves to the peak of this pandemic, let’s all face it together and appreciate how fragile our lives are and how we need each other to survive and flourish.

Puy/vertes lentils are great instead of soya mince for any veggie or vegans out there.

VenetoResident · 19/03/2020 11:47

@Onceuponatimethen

I killed a car battery driving 2 miles twice a day. I'm sure your plan is much better!

@bellinisurge - we have oodles of noodles too!

Readyme · 19/03/2020 11:50

@KatyMac do the adult kids have any money at all? If so they need to use it to provide themselves with food especially when their limitation are by choice. I say that as an ex veggie of 8 years.

I can get a job in my local Asda through a friend and volunteer to drop hours at work (before they’re reduced by force, I suspect) but I’m truly terrified of catching it. Would you?

CRVD · 19/03/2020 13:13

I have been on these threads (and the board since the start) but NCed as don't want to be outed under usual name. Just wanted to say one thing I would have done is get more drinks/broth type soup/ice lollies/clear liquids.

(I don't want to worry people with this as I have lung fibrosis from another active disease which is why I am so poorly) I suddenly felt ill Monday morning with a bad hoarse cough and splitting headache. Since then my temp has gone up to nearly 40 degrees and I can't describe how rotten I feel (this is taking ages to type). My GP thinks it's definitely CV and probably pneumonia. For obvious reasons I'm better off at home at the moment unless I deteriorate.

All I want is juice with ice in, ice lollies and clear liquids like squash. I'm trying to drink lots but DH has to help me to the bathroom as I'm so weak so our self isolation isn't going that well...

I so wish I had made some chicken soup (proper clear yet schmaltzy Jewish chicken soup with matzo balls!) and frozen it. So if any of you get the chance, make some :)

I'm sure without my other health issues I would be nowhere near this bad so really don't want to worry you guys and I'm not encouraging more buying but I thought you really need to know about the chicken soup! I don't feel up to typing out my recipe but I'm sure Claudia Roden will have one.

I'm sending everyone good wishes and positive thoughts and hope everyone stays safe and well.

Oxyiz · 19/03/2020 13:17

@CRVD that's awful, I really hope you feel better soon, and that you don't deteriorate any further, it must be really scary. Thanks for the tip on getting extra ice/ice lollies in, hadn't thought of those at all.

I've lost track a bit of who's said what, but my Medisave virusolve wipes and spray have arrived today, and I'm grateful to whoever linked to them.

It's been nice avoiding the shops lately - I'm now just thinking that I should try again to go shopping soon if there are going to be long-term problems.

And I'm burying my head in the sand on a massive economic crash. I don't know how we'll pull out of that one.

TiddleTaddleTat · 19/03/2020 13:27

@CRVD so sorry you are feeling so poorly, it sounds really tough. Hopefully it will pass soon and begin to lift.
I have no underlying health issues and mid 30s and has suspected CV and have recovered.
I also needed to drink much more than normal - it's a dry/burning sensation in the throat and lungs, exacerbated by talking and coughing. Lots of small sips of water squash or soup help.

CRVD · 19/03/2020 13:31

If I was reading this post before this week I would roll my eyes at myself, but right now DH and I aren't giving any headspace to money - obviously he had to stop work suddenly this week and he won't be entitled to SSP, we have bills and rent to pay! I don't know how we will manage. But there hopefully will be no imminent evictions so a roof over our head and thanks to this thread we have enough food for the DC.

The way I feel at the moment makes everything except for mine and my families health, including money seem insignificant (I know it isn't of course).

I also think there will be lots of work opportunities in sectors like delivery drivers, shops etc and either we will just start a new normal and settle in, or also as I am hoping- people who have had it will be immune and have less fear of infection once we have had it.

It's that old trite saying about health being more important than money but it's true...

CRVD · 19/03/2020 13:33

That took so much time and effort to type I forgot to say I also know probably half a dozen people who believe for good reason they have had it and were mildly unwell like a cold for a few days and absolutely fine. So don't listen to me, except about the chicken soup :)

tryingtoprep · 19/03/2020 13:36

You poor thing @CRVD I hope this is the worst for you and it's recovery from now onwards. Flowers

@AlohaMolly I'd consider taking the job as long as you and no-one else in your household is in any of the higher risk groups.

I wish our government had acted sooner. Not only would have lives been saved but the longer-term impact on the economy might have been avoided. We had the advantage of a warning.

I'm very relieved for my elderly family members re the elderly shopping slots at supermarkets. I'd feel happier if they'd managed to get online delivery to avoid the shops altogether but it's the next best option.

SeaToSki · 19/03/2020 13:37

@CRVD do you have any zinc supplements in the house. I came down with something corona-ish two days ago and I am holding it at bay with zinc lozenges and mucinex (contains guaifenisin which thins mucuus) and paracetomol. Also a humidifier with tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil. At the moment it seems to be holding things at a manageable level.

For the PP who wanted to defrost her freezer. Unplug it, switching it off is not good enough. Empty everything out and keep it somewhere cool packed tightly together. Use a hair dryer to melt the ice, but be VERY careful to put it on a stool or something when you put it down, if you Put it in a puddle of water you will electrocute yourself. And there will be puddles of water. Then get lots of towels and a shallow tray or tupperware to scoop all the melted water and icy bits into and wear some old clothes 🤣

Just checking in. I’ve been here from the beginning too and name changed midway through. Had to step away a bit the last few days trying to start to focus on keeping our house a happy place for my little ones. Feel relieved that schools are closing but still can’t quite believe this is happening. We are in isolation as one of my children had a high temp, sore throat and headache for a few days. I’ve also heard the rumours about lock down from a few inside sources. If this happens will food deliveries still be made? Feel so relieved that we’ve been prepping for this since the beginning of Feb, can’t imagine the additional stress of not having anything in. Finally got my mum to start preparing a bit before everyone started panic buying though still trying to get her to stop popping here there and everywhere. @CRVD I hope you feel better soon. Also a huge thank you to all of you in essential roles in the health service, public services, schools, supermarkets, cleaners etc you are all heros. Stay safe everyone.

16943389ao · 19/03/2020 14:09

Just looked at world o meters has the death rate gone up because milder cases aren’t being recorded?

ooopsupsideyourhead · 19/03/2020 14:50

@CRVD I hope feel better soon, I will definitely take your tip about liquid and ice on board xx

@bellinisurge funnily enough we had all the canapés left from a cancelled New Years party that we found deep in the freezer last weekend for Sunday lunch. Haha, I’m glad we aren’t the only ones! Grin

Yesterday was a shitter. My school closed after we reached a tipping point for student safety and supervising staff. Then, obviously the news we were all expecting at 5:15. It made it all so real. I cried quite a lot. Feeling more stoical today.

JustMeAndMyTins · 19/03/2020 14:52

Quite probably. I mean we know from Veneto in Italy and the UK government that mild cases aren’t being tested a lot in many places. Germany IS testing a lot. Not sure about other countries with significant outbreaks. I also wouldn’t trust any ‘serious/critical’ condition data as it’s quite obviously not being reported but also covered by the fact that the numbers largely refer to the hospitalised.

What a shit show.

KatyMac · 19/03/2020 15:22

@Readyme no or at least not longterm

DD is a dancer/performer and lost all her venues so is trying to stream dance classes on Twitch to earn money and the bf is scared so not working

I don't mind supporting them - it's just the practicalities of a high protein/high fat diet for dh and a severely restricted (but high protein) diet for me stretching to 2 more people who don't eat meat!! When ALL the protein I bought was meat/fish!!

Legoandloldolls · 19/03/2020 15:28

Sorry I had a meltdown in the last 24 hours due my eldest son and his gcses.

Been in tears dropping my daughter off in infants. I cant face people in rl. Talked to my cousin in the NHS who did help.

But the it's just flu brigade can do one. Flu doesn't not fuck up year year 11 entire education.

CRVD · 19/03/2020 15:34

Thank you for all good wishes Thanks yes I agree we all owe a huge gigantic thanks to all front line workers dealing with this.

I haven't tried zinc but I think I will!

I was saying to DH earlier, even though we are the people that believed this was coming and prepared, it still doesn't seem real. I'm sure when I feel better I will have so much to worry about on top of health worries for my family - my younger DCs' education, my older DCs' exams or lack of and my older older DCs' jobs as they are on isolation because of me and in industries that will probably fold. Oh and my elderly parents who will be heartbroken at not seeing my DC as they live very near and the DC pop in to them most days normally. And I help them as much as I can normally. Oh and I can't drive now as I had a seizure. Oh and no money of course. Fuck me!

We are all in the same or similar boats though aren't we and we can take comfort in the fact everyone is genuinely doing the best we can and we absolutely have done our best up to now to look after everything and our families.

I do think eventually it will sink in and we will resume some semblance of normal life even if it's a different normal from before.

CRVD · 19/03/2020 15:37

And the very first thing I am going to do when I'm up and not isolated is give my DH (and my DCs if they let me) a gigantic huge hug. I shall look forward to it.

Waitasecond · 19/03/2020 15:38

@CRVD That sounds rotten, you poor thing. I was thinking Ice lolly moulds might be a good idea, my kids live off ice lollies when they are poorly but I have limited freezer space.

CRVD · 19/03/2020 16:25

Ice lolly moulds are INSPIRED! And amazon says they will come tomorrow (fingers crossed!) thank you

Another idea someone posted on an earlier thread was the freeze pops as they go in a cupboard until you’re ready to freeze them so saves freezer space at the moment when you might need it most.
Hope you feel better soon @CRVD

This amused me in a kinda sad way... Garden centre just now to pick up a few seeds for my tiny yard and windowsill... There were two young student type fellas looking at seeds with me and choosing asparagus for instance thinking they would be eating it in a month or so . They were obviously gardening virgins so we discussed veg for a while. I bought broad beans , radishes , courgette, runners and some lettucey stuff for cut and come again if i can beat the slugs.
