A lot of us have been here before. We Prepped for Brexit. Some of us are Heathcare workers. We prepare for the worst every day. It's difficult to predict what will happen in our lives. In our lifetime. Will we get Cancer? Will a huge meteorite wipe the world out?

One thing is for sure, this new virus is either affecting us, or is going to affect us all very soon. You are all already onboard. I hope you are prepared and much as you can be. And in the meantime this thread is here to support us all.

This week will bring many new challenges. We are almost certain to have some sort of lockdown. Like other parts of Europe. We aren't special. We aren't different. We are all
fragile souls. But I hope we live to tell the tale.

God Speed.

I also packed my and Dds hospital bag, it is very unlikely that we'll need it but I normally keep one ready to go, as I was once hospitalised away from home with nothing and no one to get anything for me.

In my bag are 2 x sets up PJs, underwear, slipper socks, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste, disposable San Pro (I normally use reusable but that wouldn't be practical), a hair brush and hair bands. A book each and a couple of sticker and colouring books (bought ages a go but Dds it touched yet). A multi device charger and plug.

Lumene · 15/03/2020 16:56

@sleepismysuperpower1 can’t see the alcohol content if that handgel do you know what it is?

OnTheEdgeOfTheNight · 15/03/2020 17:01

Since different countries have different ideas about who to test, it's perhaps more useful to start comparing the numbers who have sadly succumbed, since at this stage that's more accurate than saying "only x new cases in the UK today".

If people are getting low on caffeinated beverages can I urge you to think about weaning yourself off them rather than hoping for the best and ending up crashing off them.

I had to stop caffeine instantly a number of years ago. I was already unwell. The caffeine withdrawal headache was the most painful headache I've ever had. I was literally curled in a ball with my head in my arms for two days.

tryingtoprep · 15/03/2020 17:07

Does the UK have enough stock of the drugs that have so far shown some success in treating it? The anti malarial, the hub drugs. Is our high death rate because we don't have supplies?

Is Germany still doing quite well re recoveries? I know they have an excellent well funded healthcare system.

@Sprayitall You could just say dc has symptoms and needs to self isolate. If you'd prefer to be honest, be polite but firm. Something like "As you might be aware, I have an underlying condition. I'm sure you'll understand my need to take extra precautions, in line with WHO advice, in order to project our family".

Boris the new Churchill? Only if Churchill had told the public at the start of WW2, "We're going to be bombed, nevermind other countries building bomb shelters and taking precautions, we're not going to do anything to limit deaths". How Boris thinks it will help the economy when other countries have us on the flight ban list is beyond me.

CalmYoBadSelf · 15/03/2020 17:11

I've been lurking since very early on in these threads but stepping forward to say I think the lack of clarity in advice is doing more harm than good. The government are advising one strategy but schools and other organisations are not always following it so we have some local schools shut and others open which is causing a lot of anxiety to parents. Also I heard earlier that the late cancellation of the 6 Nations Rugby this weekend meant that lots of fans were already there or on their way so, instead a large crowds in an open air stadium, they were all crammed into pubs
I've been really anxious over the last few days so have had to step back a bit and reaffirm to myself that, even in the highest risk group, over 85% survive so my chances are not too bad and I am doing all I can. Thankfully these threads have meant I am reasonably prepared which is one less thing to worry about!

sleepismysuperpower1 · 15/03/2020 17:19

@Lumene, i'm not too sure, i have just gone back and checked the ingredients which are listed as :
Alcohol Denat., Aqua, Pentylene Glycol, Glycerin, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Butylene Glycol, Parfum, Sodium Hydroxide, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Extract.
but no indication of the percentage of alcohol. i also found some handgel on amazon germany here for around £5.25 with £0.99 shipping to the UK

sleepismysuperpower1 · 15/03/2020 17:19

^^ the one from amazon germany has 75% alcohol

MrsWhites · 15/03/2020 17:23

@OnTheEdgeOfTheNight I agree, unfortunately ‘new deaths’ figures are the only way to compare directly and if you look at those figures, we are not doing well at all. USA have more confirmed cases but almost 1/3 of deaths today compared with us.

I have just read that next COBRA meeting is tomorrow but no press conference until Tuesday!

wheresmymojo · 15/03/2020 17:24

@Graphista I have gone cold turkey with Diet Coke but am still drinking tea and coffee so shouldn't have a caffeine withdrawal thankfully!

Point taken re: injury possibility of jogging will do power walking instead Wink

wheresmymojo · 15/03/2020 17:25

Very sad

Coronavirus: Wife's heartbreak as 'soul mate' becomes UK's youngest victim news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-wifes-heartbreak-as-soul-mate-becomes-uks-youngest-victim-11958030

Graphista · 15/03/2020 17:28

So heartbreaking for the loved ones of those dying. Hard to know what else to say,

tryingtoprep · 15/03/2020 17:30

US has taken more action than us so it's not surprising they have less deaths per number of cases. I also suspect they have good stock of the drugs used as treatment. As the UK government is doing nothing loop(except talking about possibly doing something at some as yet unknown point) we'll likely be one of the worst hit countries.

OnTheEdgeOfTheNight · 15/03/2020 17:31

I would also be interested in seeing stats on ICU beds / ventilators. Presumably the UK's numbers of those being used by patients and the total available would be useful. I believe we have approx 4500 across the country. It would be interesting to see how many more can be made available, how many are being used etc.

Sorry to hear about that. Have you discovered their Presto giant kitchen rolls? Similar in texture and massive squares which if folded in four and crumpled a bit might be better than your old paperback books Grin Needs must, and all that... They're probably still available - unless others have done a bit of lateral thinking too!

VenetoResident · 15/03/2020 17:33

Change in swab numbers - 15,729

wheresmymojo · 15/03/2020 17:45

The global death rate has been tracking down for some time until it reached 6%....now it is tracking back up (8%) Sad

MinesaPinotPlease · 15/03/2020 17:49

@VenetoResident

Thank you so much for your daily updates.
Those figures are terrifying.

My godson is Italian and living alone in Milan. We chat on messenger and he is lonely and fed up but says well this is what we must do.

He told me he plays monopoly online with friends in the evenings to pass the time.

I do feel for our young people who just want to be out having fun. But am proud that those in the worst hit areas seem to be doing what is best for wider society.

I hope their British cousins (including my son at a British uni) will do the same.

Orchidflower1 · 15/03/2020 17:51

@tryingtoprep that’s exactly what I was meaning. Boris has written a few books about Churchill and I think it’s quite widely known that he models some of his speeches on the style. However he couldn’t be any less like Churchill at the moment. More like an ostrich sticking it’s head in the sand.

tryingtoprep · 15/03/2020 17:54

Yes you're absolutely right @Orchidflower1

colouringinpro · 15/03/2020 17:57

my ds now has a bit of a cough and isn't feeling well Hmm

VenetoResident · 15/03/2020 18:07

@ontheedge - I read this Italian report earlier. It's based on yesterday's figures.

"The positive are 13,272, plus 1,587, the hospitalized are 4,898, plus 602 compared to yesterday, there is a constant but not exponential growth. In intensive care they increase only by 25, 757 in total, a much smaller figure than the average of 45 but we don't sing victory, also because the deaths are 1,218, with a growth of 252 ": said the councilor for Welfare of the Lombardy Region Giulio Gallera.

While the government is working on new measures to support the economy and workers for the coronavirus emergency, the situation in Lombardy is becoming more complicated every day.

"We intubate in Intensive Care even more than 7 people a day and we work tirelessly, with an average of one shift every 14 days", tells ANSA Ivano Riva, anesthesiologist and resuscitator of the Giovanni XXIII Hospital in Bergamo. "If the trend of the SarsCov2 epidemic continues at this rate, Bergamo will still hold up very little," he admits.

"I believe there is a very wrong perception in Rome and beyond. The situation is objectively very serious - the governor of Lombardy Attilio Fontana said in an morning in an interview with Repubblica - the virus is underhand, disappears and reappears and hits hard. We are at drips of beds for intensive care, the commissioner tells me that there are a few dozen ".

The government's reply is not long in coming. "There is maximum attention for the situation in Lombardy", points out the Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. "I see thousands of people working at risk and without stopping, from hospitals to those who guarantee services, from Regions, to Mayors, to Government, to Civil Protection. And I ask: enough controversy, enough mutual attacks. We are all on the same boat and there is no time to waste, "says the head of the delegation of the Democratic Party Dario Franceschini.

THE SITUATION IN VENETO WAS INCREASED - This morning, 2,172, with the addition of the last 178 cases with which the report of the Veneto Region was updated. The hospitalized patients are 426 (+10), those in intensive care 129 (+4). The death toll is worsening, now at 63, with 3 patients who died during the night. 120 patients have been discharged since the beginning of the emergency on 21 February.

FANS AND MASKS ARE NEEDED - "Our priority is to make doctors, nurses and all health personnel work safely, who with courage and spirit of self-sacrifice is working for the care of citizens, dedicating themselves to this health emergency without saving energy. As a government we are strenuously committed - and myself through contacts with my counterparts - to procure in a very short time the protective devices that allow them to work in maximum safety, "said Conte. Minister Luigi Di Maio also made it known that "the export of masks, suits and face shields from Germany and France has been unblocked". To cope with the emergency, Consip has already ordered 3,800 lung ventilators, has made an additional 300 available for immediate delivery, and has contracted supplies for over 30 million surgical masks, more than 7 million gloves, over 13 million coveralls, boots, headphones and gowns (still to be assigned by the Civil Protection) and for over 390 thousand swabs and more than 260 diagnostic kits corresponding to over 67 thousand tests. The company announced this by explaining that all supplies "are completely safe".

IN MILAN 10 THOUSAND CHECKS - There were 9924 checks on compliance with the provisions for the containment of Coronavirus carried out in Milan yesterday. In 24 hours the law enforcement officers checked 4,937 people, of these 215 were reported for not having respected the measures (for example, having left the house without reason) while 6 for lying in the self-certification. Controls on the stores were 4,987, 19 owners complained of not having complied with the rules and three fined.

THE NUMBERS - There are 17,750 coronavirus patients in Italy, 2,795 more in a day, while the total number of infected people - including the victims and the cured - has reached 21,157. This is the data provided by the emergency commissioner Angelo Borrelli at a press conference to the Civil Protection. 1,441 are the victims. In one day there was an increase of 175 deaths. There are 1,518 patients admitted to intensive care, 190 more than the day before. "We are facing a great pandemic - he added - we must all work together without controversy", said Borrelli on the accusations of the Regions, in particular of Lombardy (on the masks).

Albatross123 · 15/03/2020 18:08

@Sprayitall
I suggest you just write something very brief saying that you are self-isolating. Don't attempt to explain why. They can't argue with it that way.

VenetoResident · 15/03/2020 18:11

If you look at the national spread, I'm scared for 10 days time when the effect of the mass exodus South at the start of the quarantine begins to show.
