A lot of us have been here before. We Prepped for Brexit. Some of us are Heathcare workers. We prepare for the worst every day. It's difficult to predict what will happen in our lives. In our lifetime. Will we get Cancer? Will a huge meteorite wipe the world out?

One thing is for sure, this new virus is either affecting us, or is going to affect us all very soon. You are all already onboard. I hope you are prepared and much as you can be. And in the meantime this thread is here to support us all.

This week will bring many new challenges. We are almost certain to have some sort of lockdown. Like other parts of Europe. We aren't special. We aren't different. We are all
fragile souls. But I hope we live to tell the tale.

God Speed.

To quote a much loved US cop show

"Let's be careful out there"

FecktheBoss · 14/03/2020 21:28

I am really hoping that they say wfh soon.

WrapTrap · 14/03/2020 21:32

Checking in.

LeGrandBleu · 14/03/2020 21:35

I am in Australia, our PM is as bad as yours.

Oxyiz · 14/03/2020 21:38

I'm watching Ricky Gervais videos on youtube to try and cheer us up this evening. I think he's brilliant.

Got to try not to obsess constantly!

WattsandAwl · 14/03/2020 21:40

Which online news services do you use, for latest Coronavirus information? BBC?

lachy · 14/03/2020 22:03

Checking in.

DH has been checking out the local pages on Facebook...there is a shop selling hand sanitizer for £8.00 for a 50ml bottle.

He sheepishly admitted later that he's so pleased that I have prepped so well.

He raised a good point about DD. If the nursery closes, he wants to get some resources together so we can get DD ready for starting school in September. I'm probably going to spend most of my evenings this week putting together a home ed pack.

Jobs for tomorrow...
Fill up the car with petrol
Defrost the freezer in the Garage and clean and restack the fridge! (Dh did it- and claims that both are full. They are most definitely not!)
Amazon order for educational resources.

I meant to say on the last thread...I ordered our repeat Prescriptions a week after our usual order date. The surgery processed them, so we have 7 weeks worth of meds, at the minute and if there are any supply issues when they are actually due we've at least got 28 days worth at home, so it may be worth doing if you can?

Destinysdaughter · 14/03/2020 22:21

Just checking in. Thanks for new thread. Was in town today and there was such a weird atmosphere, like everything looked normal but it seemed uncannily calm with an air of seriousness about it, or maybe that's just my own projection? And Tescos Extra was practically deserted, only 10 pp in there at 2 this afternoon!

peachgreen · 14/03/2020 22:36

We saw our extended family today. They were laughing at me for having prepped (same as they did for Brexit) but by the afternoon as more info about the length of time we'll be expected to isolate came out they started asking for tips and apologising for making fun.

PNomintrude · 14/03/2020 22:40

I really hope the schools close soon but it doesn't look like it. Feeling very scared as I have asthma and am a former smoker Blush. I'm prepared as much as I can be for self-idolating but as I work in a school and have a school-age child, it looks like that's not going to be an option and the numbers who will contract the virus will likely mean the NHS can't cope and fatalities will therefore be higher. I'm just in disbelief with the direction the govt has chosen to lead us in. I've read all the reasoning for it and I do sort of get it but I still think it's incredibly dangerous. Sad

originalcatlady · 14/03/2020 22:41

@lachy twinkl have given free access to all self isolating

JellyFishSquish · 14/03/2020 22:42

Told DH's Aged Mother not to go to church. I mean, not even the Pope is going to church these days! Trouble is she lives alone, and often desperate for a natter (I call often!)

KatharineClover · 14/03/2020 22:43

@lachy Twinkl are offering a month's free membership and have prepared home learning packs for each age group. You could download from there to save spending all your evenings this week creating your own?
(Hi everyone, from a long term lurker!)

Orchidflower1 · 14/03/2020 22:45

@FuckThisWind thanks for the new thread.

Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 22:48

Does anyone know where to get some masks please? Please pm if you can buy from somewhere (I have few left but seeing the situation unfold I don’t think we have enough and m panicking) sorry

Graphista · 14/03/2020 22:49

Checking in...

Apparently Catholic Church considering cancelling mass. Now THAT is unheard of!

I go to bbc news generally but will occasionally do a general news check, trying to resist doing this too often.

Vaki · 14/03/2020 22:57

Information coming from my son, his store manager has put in a lock down plan in place by himself while he waits for the company to send out more details. I do want to assure people that supermarkets are planning and prepping for a potential shut down and how they can help.

I do ask people to respect workers during this difficult time, maintain good hygiene and where possible keep a safe distance from workers who have no choice but to ve there l.

lucofizzfran · 14/03/2020 23:09

First time posting here. Saw this coming back in January but only came to the Prepping Party in February. No masks and little sanitizer. More ready to bug in tbh.

The guardian run a fantastic live update feed. It's fantastic. No sensationalism and all.fact based..

wheresmymojo · 14/03/2020 23:23

Just checking in.

People refusing to comply with the over 70s isolation (assuming it becomes a real thing).

Many on the thread don't seem to understand the gravity of the situation or that actually lots of people are going to die. Denial is so strong that countries can be closing their borders, economic crashes, once in a lifetime stuff going on and they can't see that lots of people are going to die.

RhubarbTea · 14/03/2020 23:25

I know what you mean about the denial, it is a very powerful force. I guess feels safe and protective, even when it's not keeping people safe at all.

Onceuponatimethen · 14/03/2020 23:28

@lachy I have a dd the same age. Things I would recommend (sure you have some of those) are:

Oxford owl - free online ebooks right from the very first phonics

Reading eggs the app - again goes from the first few sounds

Jolly songs on YouTube - covers all the phonics sounds with nice little songs for each sound

BBC series on iPlayer time for school - my dd loves this!

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 23:30

Evening.

I've made up my mind to take dd older out from the Tuesday. That gives us the weekend + extra day.

She's fine alone at home. It's my younger daughter that's causing me the agony.

She'll definitely be off on Monday and maybe dh can work from home.
But I'm not happy with the exposure I'm getting in my job.

Dh is driving for 40 min tomorrow under great duress to buy us a counter top small freezer!! Only 2 bags worth of food capacity but its something extra. I plan on putting loads more chopped onion and mushroom and peppers in it then meat.

I went to waitrose earlier, no eggs, no pasta.
Obviously no loo roll!.
I did a £50 shop for the food bank.

I usually add small things but I'm feeling pretty ahead of the game thanks to these threads, so I was able to give something back. Dh and I have been on bread line for many years and now things have eased slightly so it felt good to be able to contribute. Lots of treats in there too.

I'm aiming to up my general contributions as well..

Again thanks to these threads putting me ahead. Flowers

Pebble21uk · 14/03/2020 23:30

sprayitall reusable Force 8 P3s are still available on eBay for £30 ish.

doneaflit You can buy saline nebules to use in nebulisers from Amazon... Around £20- £30. These help moisten and loosen the airways, but for ventolin nebules you need to ask your doctor and get them on prescription.

pemberlyshades · 14/03/2020 23:35

I'm here!

AlohaMolly · 14/03/2020 23:35

Can I add a suggestion for a website called Phonics Play? It was great when I was teaching, all sorts of different phonics games for early years and KS1 pupils. I used it on an interactive whiteboard but I’m assuming you could use it on a tablet and maybe they’ve even made it mobile friendly. I think you need to subscribe though.

DP sent the link to PIL about isolating for 4 months. They’re both over 70 and MIL in particular has a weak chest. They’re response? ‘Surely they can’t do that? It’s against our human rights?!’
