A lot of us have been here before. We Prepped for Brexit. Some of us are Heathcare workers. We prepare for the worst every day. It's difficult to predict what will happen in our lives. In our lifetime. Will we get Cancer? Will a huge meteorite wipe the world out?

One thing is for sure, this new virus is either affecting us, or is going to affect us all very soon. You are all already onboard. I hope you are prepared and much as you can be. And in the meantime this thread is here to support us all.

This week will bring many new challenges. We are almost certain to have some sort of lockdown. Like other parts of Europe. We aren't special. We aren't different. We are all
fragile souls. But I hope we live to tell the tale.

God Speed.

@lachy
I wouldn’t worry too much about academic stuff before school. They really just need to be able to go to the toilet and change their clothes. Maybe recognise their written name for labelled things (although you can get stickers with a picture too which helps with that).

buckeejit · 15/03/2020 07:10

Oi@wheresmymojo that's really worrying. I'm ridiculously overweight, no way I could run but will go back to trying for 10k steps. Wish all the churches would wise up & cancel today's services

Sprayitall · 15/03/2020 07:11

Morning,

@Pebble21uk could you please share me the product link in the eBay. There are too many and I couldn’t find which one is that force 8 mask

Sprayitall · 15/03/2020 07:17

Also people who have prepped with masks, what masks did you buy for kids in case they need any?

BlueTuesday20 · 15/03/2020 07:22

I bought a selection of masks. Surgical, FP3 and the ones for DIY - made out if plastic/ rubber with replaceable filters. I doubt if I will use. Yes, includes masks for DC.

Posharmchairs · 15/03/2020 07:25

@Sprayitall I was wondering the same thing. The dc in our family are too small for any kind of diy kit.

Fivefourthree · 15/03/2020 07:29

Morning all. Thanks for new thread.

Sprayitall · 15/03/2020 07:30

My dc is 5 and I don’t think she will like to wear any kind of them yet. I got the hygge bands as someone suggested but I can see it’s not going to work. I couldn’t get hold of any yet for dc.

VivaLeBeaver · 15/03/2020 07:35

Dd is in a vulnerable group so if the rumours are true will be told to stay home for 4 months. She’s an adult but still lives at home so I assume I will also need to stay home for 4 months. Not sure how impressed my boss will be. And then I need to convince dh who is still very much at the stage of saying it’s just a bit of flu and these people who have died would have died soon anyway.

Mrsappleby · 15/03/2020 07:51

If they do bring in self isolation for over 70's I presume that also means no visitors?

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 15/03/2020 08:07

@VivaLeBeaver, where have you read that vulnerable groups other than over 70s will be asked to stay at home? I would be very grateful if this happens as my dad has COPD but is well under 70 and has to work.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/03/2020 08:08

Do we think that self isolation will also be for people in other high risk categories too?

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 15/03/2020 08:08

My mum is a prepper, has been all her life.

Always keeps at least 3-4 weeks worth of food, lots of tins and part baked bread and uht milk, and 2 massive tins of dried beans and rice. Neither she nor my dad take any meds ( mid 80s) but have paracetamol at home.

As a child she lived through poverty and hunger in her home country.

It means she and my dad can self isolate now

I have never seen myself as a “prepper”, but I do also always keep stores, check dates and keep enough stuff in. Turns out I maybe am a prepper after all, I think? Grin

It really helps my anxiety to feel a bit more prepared. And I don’t need to panic buy (yet)

Shops still fine where I live btw

Keen to join this thread as the lack of panic here is soothing Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/03/2020 08:10

The difference in stock in different areas is astonishing. dd says her supermarkets at her uni town are only missing loo roll. Here, ours look like a disaster movie.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 15/03/2020 08:10

Those who rely on GPs for some of their childcare, what arrangements are you putting in place? We have a plan to muddle through on the days we can't find space with a provider but it's not ideal and my employer has pointed out that the peak isn't expected until May/June. Doesn't help us now though. I think employers should be required to offer emergency medium-term flexibility.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 15/03/2020 08:12

Out local Tesco was out of lots of things yesterday and running low on tuna and beans.

pasanda · 15/03/2020 08:18

My local Aldi yesterday had everything, even loo roll and paracetamol and uht milk

Sprayitall · 15/03/2020 08:28

I find all the supermarkets in university towns are well stocked except for handgels and loo rolls - May I ask why people are panic buying so much of loo rolls here as I can’t comprehend why someone needs 6 bags of 12 loo rolls. The papers here show how busy the places like Costco are with ques lining up to the far end of car park to get in and an even longer que to get out - and everyone has this truck load of bog rolls - On ordinary days we might run out of 1 of them in a week max so even if all staying home it’s going to be 2 and 12 will last for atleast 6 weeks (May be a month for people with large households??) Are they planning to sell I wonder because panic buying at the last minute and stock piling of loo rolls for 6 months is a bit too much I think as it would leave the people who might need it worse off .meanwhile one lovely thing to say about my town -one of the Indian takeaway’s here is giving away one loo roll free per takeaway order lol

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 15/03/2020 08:32

one of the Indian takeaway’s here is giving away one loo roll free per takeaway order lol

Imagine what that would imply about the food under normal circumstances Grin

Sprayitall · 15/03/2020 08:37

@myhips lol that was what I was thinking. Get you free vinda-loo roll with every order says the ad - On ordinary days this will be interpreted as something really dodgy and funny

Sprayitall · 15/03/2020 08:40

They are also advertising their take away service as “Tandoor to your car door” service amidst covid fears asking everyone to encourage local businesses.

I've been talking to myself over on the other page:

@butterflylove81 @ElizabethG81
Just catching up on thread and I'm sure your questions if what to buy have been answered but basically buy what you normally eat.

Wrote a list of your meals and write a shopping list from there. Include easy things too incase you are ill. Maybe a pot noodle or whatever.

On top of that you'll need a cleaning spray, loo roll, pet food, treats treats treats, calpol, paracetamol.

@JaneBond0007 re. Choosing a topic.
Great idea and it's what schools do but normally over a term. Sounds like you should be a teacher! Also @Readyme I believe it's Orchard Games that replace lost parts for free.

@Sprayitall I don't think your post was offensive. I think we can advise new people now if they aren't here to ridicule and they can be preppers for the next big thing.
As for slugs we put out jars of beer. It does kill them (and I'm a vegan of many many years) but... what a way to go.

84TinsOfBeans · 15/03/2020 08:45

Re. Slug killer for gardeners

Can I just say ( and I'm sure lots know this) but even slug killers that say they are pet friendly doesn't mean they are wildlife friendly. I'm all for killing slugs but if a bird or hedgehog eats a slug contaminated by slug killer they will also be poisoned.

Does anyone have any experience of nematodes. I read they are fab in year one but super slugs return after that.

84TinsOfBeans · 15/03/2020 08:46

@lachy I love crochet too and Bella coco is great. Bag o day and woolly wonders are good too.

You could use cows milk instead of soya.

Good morning all! I’m gearing up to having to tell my boss that I might potentially be off work - I work Wednesday-Friday and the test results come back on Tuesday. I’d forgotten that if you’ve had direct contact it’s 14 days self isolation, not 7, my boss is going to be very miffed!

Is everyone thinking they’d have some sort of timetable for self isolation? I think I under estimated how taxing it would be on adults as well as children!
