Thread 12!

I can't seem to carry over the clicky links in the OP of the last thread. Can anyone else?

So many elderly people don’t have the internet so phoning in grocery orders is perfect 😍

Area update: the case in my borough not showing is because they live out of borough but attend a local school. So it’s not data late on that particular case

New update as of 9

@VenetoResident I was reading the terrifying twitter thread you posted just as there was a woman taking oh so very calmly and wisely on BBC news. She was saying that despite it being counter intuitive, scientists believe that cancelling large gatherings isn't going to help reduce the spread 🙄🙄
Reading between the lines of what she said, its more about people not being compliant, so they aren't going to bother while the numbers are low...

FuckThisWind · 10/03/2020 07:55

Morning all.

I have to go shopping for Mum today. She can't eat at all tomorrow due to the type of scan she has to have on Thurs. So wants some yummy bits for today, and liquids for tom.

Just remembered - in the conversation with docs, they said they needed to code me. So have thorough tests. Ascertain the type and severity of asthma I have, and note my medical records accordingly. This has never been done with me, which may also explain why they need to now.

Good luck in all you do today folks. Be safe, healthy and as happy as you can.

Cismyfatarse1 · 10/03/2020 08:00

Morning everyone. I am a follower but not yet a contributor but have learned so much from these threads so thanks.

A few questions. We have 2 teenagers returning from University in the next few days.

We also care for my elderly (had a stroke but getting better) MiL who lives up the road.

We have food, medicine and loo rolls, plus cleaning stuff.

I am wondering about buying buckets / bins with lids for transporting dirty sheets / crockery / clothes around the house if we are dealing with a quarantine / actual case.

What sort of "equipment" do people think. Our house is not huge and we won't move MiL in as her mobility issues mean she needs to be in her bungalow. But we might need to get things to / from her plus deal with someone isolated in a bedroom.

We have 2 loos but only one shower but we can strip / sink wash if necessary.

Thoughts??

Thanks so much.

@rhij86 I have kept dd off as she had a slight tummy upset day before yesterday (48hour rule) I don’t know what reason to say to keep her off tomorrow. The germ is now in the area and next door to school. The complacency is astonishing. They can decide if they need to keep the schools open but they don’t want to do it yet. The surgery was closed afternoon yesterday for deep clean and say they will be open as normal today.

ofwarren · 10/03/2020 08:12

@puppycorn
How many children are in your child's class? Are they over subscribed?
If they aren't you could formally withdraw and then get her place back.
My son has done this and his head teacher is going to keep me informed if they get close to capacity. There are 25 in his class and they are allowed 30.

MotherOfDragonite · 10/03/2020 08:22

She has written to her MP. I will suggest the chief medical officer too. Unfortunately though I suspect they are well aware of the alternative options as there is quite a bit of research on the 1918 flu pandemic spread, SARS, etc and best practice in avoiding transmission.

Puppycorn · 10/03/2020 08:29

@Cismyfatarse That’s a good question. At my place what we have decided is to use the main bathroom upstairs, there is a bin and the bath tub that has hot water. the plan is, if someone gets ill all their clothes and stuff will go into the bucket placed inside the bathtub, filled with hot water and soak it in dettol there for longer, then bring them downstairs to wash. We are planning if one gets it, the house will be divided into upstairs and downstairs and we won’t cross landing in the stairs

Puppycorn · 10/03/2020 08:31

@ofwarren Yes, the school is oversubscribed with top ofsted

ofwarren · 10/03/2020 08:35

That's a shame Puppycorn
They really need to cancel fines for people who want to keep their kids at home.

Readyme · 10/03/2020 08:46

@Cismyfatarse bucket with lid sounds like a good idea. There is also the dettol washing liquid that you can soak thinking in for 15 mins. That might be useful to do at your mil before her stuff comes into the house.

Do you have a porch or any area that can be used solely to take off outdoor stuff?

Going forward once this really takes hold my priority will be keeping the inside of the house as safe as possible without becoming too paranoid.
So for us the separating of items (clothes, bags, coats etc) need to be removed and contained as we come indoors.
We can put up plastic sheeting to give us a zone to undress. Things that can't we washed daily will be left in container.
We can then move to our garden should it be so serious (we are talking major meltdown with tens of thousands seriously pop-up hopefully won't get that bad!) If we need to outer PPE to be washed down and removed.

This will allow us to live normally indoors, of course regular hand washing and cleaning surfaces but I want us to be able to relax at home during what is going to be a very stressful time.

Readyme · 10/03/2020 08:52

Having read a lot we don't intend to separate family members, by the time one of us is sick it's too late cross contamination has already happened.
The only way for it to work would be for DH to start isolating himself from me and DC now. For our family that's not practical, would distress DC and in a time such as this we feel the family should be together supporting one another not leaving someone isolated jic.

KundaliniRising · 10/03/2020 08:54

Posharmchairs i too do not have liners for my dehydrator, so i make fruit leathers in the oven on a really low heat, 50o. This works really well.

AmelieTaylor · 10/03/2020 08:54

0.40g Benzalkonium Chloride Dettol Wipes

Chloroxylenol 4.8% w/v normal bottle of Dettol

0.07g Benzalkonium Chloride Dettol spray

Dettol all in one spray Per 100g contains 57.81g ethanol

Various dettol products Now very confused as to which will work & which won’t.

Posharmchairs · 10/03/2020 08:56

Soon to be setting off for the day.

If anyone has any shopping list items especially good for an elderly person recovering from pneumonia with a heart condition and a strong dislike of nuts could you let me know 😁. I’m going to leave a hamper by their back door.

Dh still very chesty and we are all full of snot.

My best friend who lives in a European capital has just been told they now have more cases in the city than in the whole of the U.K., she is to work from home for the foreseeable.

Posharmchairs · 10/03/2020 08:58

@KundaliniRising thank you, I’ll give this a go tonight as my dehydration machine is soon to be full of mushrooms again.

Having to eat bread from the freezer to make room for more sensible things, like frozen eggs.....

Puppycorn · 10/03/2020 09:02

@Readyme yes same with me but the house divided into floors is to help with the plan. If dd gets it, dh will nurse her as I am high risk. Then if dh gets I will nurse him and if I get it, dh can take care if he recovers by then. This is all getting so serious.

The school is good and I don’t want to lose dd’s place. Yes, but they are winding me up in so many ways. Right now they are sending out invitations for all the relatives of kids come together and attend the school to read stories for them for one and half hours. All relatives - of children-gathering at one place- read stories for one and half hours-when there is a confirmed case in the locality what do you all think I should do??

Puppycorn · 10/03/2020 09:06

@AmelieTaylor Attached a pic from dettol website for products that work

Prepping for a pandemic...12
electrichedgehog · 10/03/2020 09:19

Lately I feel like there's a gigantic water balloon overhead getting fuller and fuller. Inevitably its eventually going to burst and everyone within range will get utterly drenched.

Even if they won't close schools generally, the bloody government needs to start closing the special schools and colleges now. They often have huge catchment areas and a high proportion of students with all sorts of medical conditions that make them very vulnerable to this.
My daughter travels 30 miles to her SEN college, If you draw a circle round it with that radius you're talking around 1,800 square miles (and its only that low as 1/3 of the circle is sea!) and she's not the furthest away by any means. The special school she attended before that was 20 miles away, and again she wasn't even near the furthest away. Transport is mainly provided by the county - school buses or taxis that are also picking up and dropping off kids to numerous other schools spread out over the county. Some of the kids/young adults struggle with things like washing hands, or just completely fail to see the need to and quite frankly will never get it. Lots of staff in close contact with the students too (at the school it was a teacher plus 7 TAs in her class of 10). Plenty of hand-holding and a good amount of random hugging. It's a complete disaster waiting to happen.

I think if my daughter was still at school I'd have pulled her out already. She was home educated till she was 11 anyway and would be fine with picking up what she's doing at college. She's nearing the end of her education though and we're currently in the middle of trying to get funding for her to do a final year. Very likely to lose that if I withdraw her. Also she claims UC and one of her commitments is to continue attending college so am assuming she'd probably either get sanctioned or lose that.

Sorry for the long rant. I think I had to say it somewhere. I don't know anyone in real-life who's taking covid-19 seriously at all and I've just stopped even mentioning anything to do with it now as I'm sick of getting told I'm being paranoid and ridiculous.

AmelieTaylor · 10/03/2020 09:26

@puppycorn

In your situation I would take her out of school without a second thought. Her whole life isn’t going to be ruined by some time off school, whereas other consequences could be massively devastating for her whole life

Then the three of you don’t have to go out. And if you do find you need something, DH can go & get it, in a very mindful way.

You just have to tell school you’re going to HE her. They don’t have to like it 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was already scared, reading accounts from Doctors in Italy, I’m properly terrified.

rhij86 · 10/03/2020 09:26

@electrichedgehog I'm sorry you are feeling ignored :( and yes what you say about schools, especially SEN schools is scary!

I know I am naturally more anxious than DH but his reaction to all this is baffling me tbh. He works in a GP surgery, has asthma, I am pregnant, and DS had respiratory issues when he was born and came home on oxygen for a short while. We were told there would be no lasting issues but who really knows?

And his reaction to all this? It's all fine, we most likely won't get it and even if we do, it will be mild and nothing to worry about. I despair. At least he has allowed me to create a small stockpile for if (when) we are put under isolation without ridiculing me for it.

rhij86 · 10/03/2020 09:27

@puppycorn at this stage I would probably also take her out of school if I was in your position. At the very least I would be telling school that neither you nor DD would be attending this reading thing. Ridiculous.

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/03/2020 09:29

Just off the phone to my DSis. She's a teacher and she has a really bad sore throat, headache and cough and her two small children have been coughing for a week too. Doctors surgery have told her to go in to see them Confused

Puppycorn · 10/03/2020 09:30

@AmelieTaylor I am just waiting for the surgery to update the information by 10 am today. If they don’t I will ring them up to ask , then call the school to discuss. It amazes me how they arrange events like these at school at this time

AmelieTaylor · 10/03/2020 09:41

@Puppycorn. You are a complete STAR!! I tried to find something like that & couldn’t!

@electrichedgehog FMD you are SPOT ON with that & the additional risks at Special Schools.

My cousins son has now left ‘College’ but I know he would have pulled him out no matter whether it risked him losing a place or not - because he’s a big hugger, hand holder & introducing a new routine/changing old routines (re additional hand washing/not sharing stuff & everything else) would have been beyond him. Totally. It’s worry enough as it is as he’s currently living in his own flat but in a block of flats for vulnerable people and he has some help - and they all shared a stair way & a communal area 😖

Plus my cousin has just been very ill & he’s late 50’s so would probably not even get treatment (if we are the same as Italy).

@hankyspanky. Thank you (&any others) for doing all you are doing🌷it’s very much appreciated by those too bloody incompetent!!

Could you please PM me your translated version of the Italian Doctor thing

TWITTER. I keep getting these links to ‘unroll’. Is it safe to click on them?
