Prepping for a pandemic 2

wheresmymojo · 04/02/2020 23:38

Second thread on prepping for a potential Coronavirus pandemic...following the latest news and information as well as prepping info.

When quoting estimates like mortality rates, replication rates, incubation periods and similar I try to stick to evidence based, scientific studies and will link to sources (unless already linked to them previously).

Generally speaking I use reputable sources of information like well regarded news outlets for other information and will provide links.

Sometimes I may post things outside of this as 'interesting' or such like. I will always caveat these as to be taken with caution.

As much as possible I am attempting not to link to fake news. It's an evolving picture so may not be 100% successful but if something is later shown to be incorrect I will post a correction.

Let's cease the army talk all and return to the topic of the thread since I think that points going around in circles now a bit

Very sad. Also worrying that he said that after he started coughing on 20th Jan, he had several coronavirus tests come back negative before he eventually tested positive on 30th

Notstrongandstable · 06/02/2020 15:03

OYBBK - the Argus "newspaper " in general is a lesson in how not to do journalism!

wheresmymojo · 06/02/2020 15:06

Nothing on name yet although I haven't been on line much since this morning.

Unfortunately tied up in a meeting that went very badly (people losing morals for greed) and right now if I had Coronavirus I genuinely feel like I'd spit in their eye Angry

The guardian just tweeted that the Brighton case was contracted OUTSIDE of China. A different Asian country.

wheresmymojo · 06/02/2020 15:07

Of course...I would have to remove my sanitary towel mask first which might rather distract from the drama...

OP posts:
wheresmymojo · 06/02/2020 15:09

I thought that might be the case from the way the official version was completely silent about the country.

If it was China, they'd have just said China like the first two cases.

Department of health are refusing to say if they are a British national or which country they caught it from.

GorkyMcPorky · 06/02/2020 15:12

That is very sad. We all owe him a debt of gratitude.

wheresmymojo · 06/02/2020 15:14

My bets then:

  • Someone of SE Asian origin from Pakistan or India or similar (they don't want the EDL types kicking off and persecuting them even more)

OR

  • Contracted in a holiday type resort that Brits go to (don't want panic)

OR

  • HK (they don't want to create further panic in HK as people there are on the edge already)

^ All total conjecture obviously

What about Philippines? They have a lot of cases too don't they. I wish they would just say. I wonder if other countries have been as evasive?

MoonlightMistletoe · 06/02/2020 15:32

Oh blimey, just seen the updates. I hope they can contact the people the person has been in contact with but considering someone caught the virus from being with someone for just 15seconds Is rather worrying so I expect we will hear about more cases within the next couple of weeks.

Very sad about the doctor and particularly concerning that he was (seemingly) otherwise fit and well. The spread of the virus is expected, but the deaths are less so when they are in young and otherwise healthy individuals.

The case of the Singaporean male who has no travel history with China nor any known contact with anyone who does is also a concern. I am working from home tomorrow but it will be interesting to see how busy, or not busy, the office is come Monday.

FourTeaFallOut · 06/02/2020 15:50

Jesus, if nobody mentions the army can people just post in peace without the mudslinging now? It's not Aibu.

justanothernameonthewall · 06/02/2020 15:52

That's sad news about the whistleblower Dr 😔

It makes me really quite anxious as a lot of the medical staff caring for those ill seem to be contracting the virus. My DH is in one of those roles and has made it clear that he would be stepping up to help if it came to it, even though he had an underlying medical condition. As does our eldest DC....

Re the disposable facemasks, maybe a combination of spraying with alcohol, hairdryer and leaving in direct sunlight for a period of time would work? I'm kind of clutching at straws here as we have a limited amount and I can't see us getting more any time soon.

ofwarren · 06/02/2020 15:53

Please no more arguing about the military. I want to read about what's happening with the coronavirus and it's clogging up the thread.

@handsoffisback I'm not the one doing that. Calm down.
I'm not the one talking "absolute bollocks"- you're going on about anthorax. Take a chill pill.

justanothernameonthewall · 06/02/2020 16:03

@handsoffisback what big announcement?

ofwarren · 06/02/2020 16:04

I hope there is some kind of announcement handsoff the lack of action from the government is worrying. Did anyone see what was being said regarding Boris Johnsons dad and the Chinese leader? Did he email him or something? I didn't get the gist of it.
