Prepping for a pandemic 2

wheresmymojo · 04/02/2020 23:38

Second thread on prepping for a potential Coronavirus pandemic...following the latest news and information as well as prepping info.

When quoting estimates like mortality rates, replication rates, incubation periods and similar I try to stick to evidence based, scientific studies and will link to sources (unless already linked to them previously).

Generally speaking I use reputable sources of information like well regarded news outlets for other information and will provide links.

Sometimes I may post things outside of this as 'interesting' or such like. I will always caveat these as to be taken with caution.

As much as possible I am attempting not to link to fake news. It's an evolving picture so may not be 100% successful but if something is later shown to be incorrect I will post a correction.

Yeah, I thought that. You could join the queue with a cold and leave with the coronavirus.

ShanghaiDiva · 06/02/2020 13:33

Yes, we have to report any health issues to the community (local govt./compound mgt or similar, English translation is a bit odd) and then seek medical treatment. It’s called a street and community health department.

ofwarren · 06/02/2020 13:33

www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-51398039?__twitter_impression=true A third patient in the UK has tested positive for coronavirus, the Department of Health has said.

The individual did not acquire the virus in the UK, chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty said.

Galleyfm · 06/02/2020 13:34

Sorry, it says in theory a hairdryer could be used but not confirmed and could damage skin

FourTeaFallOut · 06/02/2020 13:36

You'd think they would include where the third patient lived, wouldn't you?

RevolutionofourTime · 06/02/2020 13:37

@HasaDigaEebowai, no you can’t steam and reuse disposable face masks.

There was a big controversy on this in HK last week after a government official suggested it, and was quickly rebuked by experts.

Sorry meant to write 111, not 101 or contact your GP

anywinewilldonow · 06/02/2020 13:40

Third case from Brighton apparently

ofwarren · 06/02/2020 13:40

amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/feb/06/third-person-in-uk-confirmed-as-having-coronavirus?__twitter_impression=true the Guardian are saying the case is in Brighton

allthesharks · 06/02/2020 13:44

Could this new case in the UK be the person who was taken straight to hospital off of the second flight from Wuhan, instead of to Arrowe Park with the other 10 passengers? Or is it confirmed that he tested negative?

TheABC · 06/02/2020 13:46

The FAQ on the Reddit thread is reassuring. It would make sense we are bureaucratically 10 days behind the real-time statistics, based on China's processes.

It would not surprise me to see several "waves" of Coronovirus coming in over the next year or so. I can see why there is the analogy to flu.

RevolutionofourTime · 06/02/2020 13:48

This official table (updated daily by HK government) shows how infection spreads from “imported” to local cases.

www.chp.gov.hk/files/pdf/enhanced_sur_pneumonia_wuhan_eng.pdf

Also interesting to see the patients’ ages. It’s not just the elderly...

ofwarren · 06/02/2020 13:53

I don't think so @allthesharks because the news is saying they are tracing who the person has been in contact with

BookofJudith · 06/02/2020 14:05

Thanks to all for the inputs re the reusability/cleaning ideas. Looks like self isolation will definitely be the safest option as we only have a few masks.

Now to work out my personal “jump” point for keeping indoors as Dyrne says, zero comms from the UK Govt is concerning me (as was GP all screens down for several hours this morning, but I’m rationalising that as probably a weekly occurrence!)

The Reddit thread suggested that the way deaths are recorded in China might obscure (not necessarily intentionally) the true impact of the disease as there is not the option to indicate co morbidity so for example, if you die of heart failure caused by corona virus but you are not tested for corona virus, only heart failure is registered. Apologies if someone has already pointed this out.

It will be good to know more about the 3rd person in the UK too. I hope they recover quickly.

FourTeaFallOut · 06/02/2020 14:13

There's a big difference between the reporting on the BBC and the Guardian and the BBC.

BBC, we have no idea where the patient was diagnosed or where they are going.

Guardian: They are from Brighton and off to London.

Are the BBC being secretive or incompetent?

wellididntseethatcoming · 06/02/2020 14:15

@Bookofjudith Emis (gp system) being down to the extent it was this morning isn't a weekly occurrence and it's caused huge problems in some cases. But I don't think it's got anything to do with this at all.
Zero Comms from uk gov is more concerning though. It seems like the blind leading the blind

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 06/02/2020 14:26

Are the BBC being secretive or incompetent?

They’re skilled at both, so I imagine it’s a mixture of the two.

wheresmymojo · 06/02/2020 14:32

They're saying the 3rd case caught it abroad - do we know if it's from China or somewhere else as that makes quite a difference...?

Handsoff ok we get it you are an expert about the Army. Can we leave it at that.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2020 14:58

Shit, that is bad news Mojo.

I think, tracing back timelines the Guardian picked up the news about the third case from the Argus newspaper in Brighton, who was informed by someone who works in the hospital....

wellididntseethatcoming · 06/02/2020 15:00

@handsoffisback with respect (more than you seem to have) I said I'd agree to disagree. And that my opinion was my opinion.

I didn't say families lived on bases. Stop making things up. Is it the school holidays? Hmm

wellididntseethatcoming · 06/02/2020 15:01

@wheresmymojo
Such sad news. Is there any news on what they are calling it yet?
