Prepping for a pandemic 2

wheresmymojo · 04/02/2020 23:38

Second thread on prepping for a potential Coronavirus pandemic...following the latest news and information as well as prepping info.

When quoting estimates like mortality rates, replication rates, incubation periods and similar I try to stick to evidence based, scientific studies and will link to sources (unless already linked to them previously).

Generally speaking I use reputable sources of information like well regarded news outlets for other information and will provide links.

Sometimes I may post things outside of this as 'interesting' or such like. I will always caveat these as to be taken with caution.

As much as possible I am attempting not to link to fake news. It's an evolving picture so may not be 100% successful but if something is later shown to be incorrect I will post a correction.

Going to see if I can get a flu jab. I had glandular fever last year and a really nasty cold recently. I don't think my immune system is firing on all cylinders.

BlackeyedSusan · 10/02/2020 16:31

Sorry, keep the kids in at home.

Notstrongandstable · 10/02/2020 16:35

I live in Brighton and we've just had another email from school(primary) to say everyone is still expected to attend.
Personally I'm more concerned about the adults who've been confirmed and where they've been going..Sainsbury's Local and now the virus is on a trolley for example? Did somebody say it can live on surfaces for 5 weeks or was I dreaming?
Me and the two dc aren't feeling v well (cough, headache, tiredness) but it's probably just a virus, not THE virus. I feel like if I call GP etc they'll just dismiss us because we've not been to one of the countries or as far as we know with the Super spreader ...it is v worrying though

NotYourTypicalNerd · 10/02/2020 16:45

Pound stretchers have 18 rolls of tp for 2.99 or two lots (36) for a fiver so I grabbed some. Am trialling vegetarian food this week to see how the DC take to it. Just because lentils et al are also cheap atm in Pound stretcher. 39p per can so I can easily stock up. Also, squash lasts for ages. Tonight is a spinach, squash and lentil lasagne.

I've been to work today and had two children sneeze in my face, in all fairness one covered his mouth up with the back of his hand, but I felt water droplets from both - it happens regularly. Not overly concerned about this at the moment relating to the coronavirus, but if it gets worse, not sure I want to be in work.

With regard to sending children to school, all I think we can do is enforce thorough handwashing, give hand gel assuming they're old enough to be sensible with it, discuss covering mouths with hands/tissues and ideally sneezing/coughing away from others.

Just saw that s doctor's surgery in Northampton has been closed due to a "coronavirus incident".

LittleSwede · 10/02/2020 16:51

This must be the most sensible thread on this topic. Just had a quick peep at one of the new ones, it's just a mixture of panic from people who obviously haven't read up on any of the facts, combined with the 'it's just another flu' lit who are equally uninformed. I am probably spending too much time reading up/checking the news but I'd rather know than just speculate wildly. We now have at least 3 weeks worth if food, if not more. Need toothpaste and shampoo/conditioner but otherwise ok.

Yes think its in Brackley

Yes but it's nearly finished Sad

GorkyMcPorky · 10/02/2020 16:55

Oh ha, just realised this is the preppers thread. I'm only a newbie here so I'll let a real prepper start again!

AmelieTaylor · 10/02/2020 16:58

@NotYourTypicalNerd. What time shall I be there?

MoonlightMistletoe · 10/02/2020 17:10

Brighton GP practise has closed due to a staff member tests positive for the virus.

ofwarren · 10/02/2020 17:11

British Airways has announced it has cancelled all its flights to Beijing and Shanghai until 1 April due to the Coronavirus outbreak

NotYourTypicalNerd · 10/02/2020 17:28

@AmelieTaylor Should be out of the oven in about 40 mins Wink

Oh the DH cynical front, We have a bit of a trial run with Storm Ciara as we expected the power to go out (other bits of the town did, we were lucky in the end) and I pulled out the power banks and charged them up and the candles and he remarked how good it was to be organised in that situation. Small steps.

PurpleCalm · 10/02/2020 17:50

Long time lurker here...

Wanted to thank everyone for the level headed information and posts, it's so easy to get swept away in hysteria.

I went to our local supermarket today to get some cupboard items, hand gel and painkillers. Not sure if it was a coincidence but the supermarket brand original hand gel was sold out, the aloe variety had 5 left and I bought 3 of those. There was some more expensive stuff - carex etc. There was also low stock of some jarred sauces - pasta sauce, curry sauce etc.

I bought a few more tins of soup, 3 bags of pasta, 2 bread mixes, the hand gel, a pasta sauce, paracetamol and some 6 plus calpol for my children. I do already have a decent cupboard stockpile.

Aldi had 24 loo rolls for £4.99 last week, I bought 2 but we've used 12 already so I am going to go and get another 2 packs tomorrow and a few more bits and bobs.

BookofJudith · 10/02/2020 17:51

Agree with the comments about this being a sensible thread but then prepper rather than panicking comes to mind Wink

My internal stocks are as ready as they can be but we have a short haul break planned in the next few weeks so I will need to make a judgement call on the particular hub we are flying via.

It must have been a fairly large judgement call for BA to suspend flights, does anyone have an idea of the economic impact to the UK of suspending trade/tourism etc if all carriers follow suit?

Makinganewthinghappen · 10/02/2020 18:18

I now have extra medicines in and a few extra food things but I haven’t gone crazy with the food buying at the moment.

I was thinking last night at what point I would cancel activities for the children.
The are home educated - which sounds like they would mix with fewer children but in reality they mix With multiple groups of children each week ( at different set activities with different people) rather than one class - so that seems to make our levels of bugs worse!

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 18:32

THe other (non prepper) thread has just closed due to 1000 posts whilst discussing an expert from imperial college who has talked about potential infection rates and uk deaths. Much the same as the other experts were predicting last week - circa 450k uk deaths if things get bad

ofwarren · 10/02/2020 18:37

www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-7987733/amp/Killer-coronavirus-live-doorknobs-bus-handrails-protective-gear-NINE-DAYS.html?__twitter_impression=true Killer coronavirus may live on doorknobs, bus handrails and protective gear for up to NINE DAYS - four times longer than flu, study finds

LittleSwede · 10/02/2020 18:39

That thread wasn't too bad, I think I posted on it a couple of times. There are a few other threads popping up today though which are a mix of panic and a competition in being laid back about it.

I do worry about those figures, still hoping if might somehow fizzle out but looking more unlikely.

BlackeyedSusan · 10/02/2020 18:42

At least school are not going to get pissed off with you. Grin

The fridge is full, the freezer is as full as it can be. Nearly all storage areas are packed full.

I am weighing up whether to do another big shop. And whether we can live with piles of shopping everywhere.

SlayB · 10/02/2020 18:43

Did anyone listen to the radio 4 Imperial college discussion ? 60-70 % infected is super scary.

AriellaBella · 10/02/2020 18:44

@SlayB given that nobody has immunity as it's a new virus and how quickly it has been spreading in people with no symptoms, that figure doesn't surprise me, but it's terrifying.

ofwarren · 10/02/2020 18:45

A journalist for The Sun just wrote this on twitter then removed it:
I’m hearing that a local nursing home in Brighton has been closed after one of the healthcare workers, who tested positive for coronavirus, visited it yesterday.

Gammeldragz · 10/02/2020 18:46

Which was the other good thread? I'm sure I saw it a few days ago and now can't find it.
