Prepping for a pandemic 2

Second thread on prepping for a potential Coronavirus pandemic...following the latest news and information as well as prepping info.

When quoting estimates like mortality rates, replication rates, incubation periods and similar I try to stick to evidence based, scientific studies and will link to sources (unless already linked to them previously).

Generally speaking I use reputable sources of information like well regarded news outlets for other information and will provide links.

Sometimes I may post things outside of this as 'interesting' or such like. I will always caveat these as to be taken with caution.

As much as possible I am attempting not to link to fake news. It's an evolving picture so may not be 100% successful but if something is later shown to be incorrect I will post a correction.

I've bought some yeast , I've been practising making my own breakfast rolls, bread loafs and French sticks so I might do some baking over the weekend and freeze it all for back ups.

Also bought fresh spinach and have rinsed it off and thrown it in the freezer. I plan to do the same with some fresh vegetables like peppers, onions etc.

Adding afew pots of gravy granules to my list as I use it to add to soups I make. Also lemons, honey and ginger are good for the immune system especially if feeling unwell so il add those to my list.
I've actually been using my honey as a lip balm this weather is awful for chapped lips!

@MoonlightMistletoe do you mix the honey with something or use it on its own?
Ignore the trolls. I dont understand going over to boards that don't interest you, and calling the posters names. Let's just carry on our discussions.

ThierryEnnui · 06/02/2020 16:14

Lol at “you need locking up”!

ofwarren · 06/02/2020 16:16

I'm already a stickler for hand hygiene because of my immunosuppressed child but I noticed today how disgusting the screens of those touch screen ATMs are. I bet they never get wiped. Was actually considering taking my Dettol wipes with me and cleaning them Grin I didn't obviously. I do take my hand gel everywhere with me though.

wellididntseethatcoming · 06/02/2020 16:16

@ofwarren he accidentally cc'd the bbc into an email relating concern from Chinese officials that Boris hadn't been in touch with them since the beginning of the outbreak.

wellididntseethatcoming · 06/02/2020 16:18

@ofwarren I've been thinking about this too. I usually use my car key (the bit that pops out) to press the buttons because you never know who's touched them. But some are touch screen.
I thought about some dettol wipes in my handbag.

MoonlightMistletoe · 06/02/2020 16:21

@ofwarren I completely agree!

I've been using the honey alone , my lips were incredibly dry, red around the outside and chapped and I've found the chapped parts have healed quickly and also find it very moisturising. I'm sure I read somewhere that honey is a great antiseptic!

MoonlightMistletoe · 06/02/2020 16:22

Antibacterial*

ofwarren · 06/02/2020 16:24

I'm concerned that he hasn't contacted them too! I'm not seeing much planning, it all seems to be reactionary. It's possible things are happening that we don't know about though.

I will have to try the honey trick next time my lips are chapped. Thanks moonlight

wellididntseethatcoming · 06/02/2020 16:30

@ofwarren he's got his dad on the case. Hopefully there will be some kind of update soon. I'm seeing a lot coming through via nhs emails that isn't reported on in the news, so there's lots of preparation going on behind the scenes. But the second cobra meeting I'm hoping will be more positive in terms of a solid strategy.

Not sure where the 3rd patient has had contact yet but if it's been somewhere like an airport or an aircraft that's a lot of people to track in different directions.

TipseyTorvey · 06/02/2020 16:31

My latex gloves arrived. I always have some in anyway for cleaning vile things or hair stuff but now I'm contemplating having some in my handbag for touching atms or supermarket self service etc but find myself thinking 'will I look ridiculous and do I care?'. At what point does caution take over from appearances?

ofwarren · 06/02/2020 16:31

Do we know when the second cobra meeting is?

FourTeaFallOut · 06/02/2020 16:33

At what point does caution take over from appearances?

When the word cluster is in the same sentence as UK.

Does anybody know if the information has changed with regards to goggles?
Of the news reports I've seen this week and last week nobody seems to be wearing the goggles too.

MissPoldark · 06/02/2020 16:57

Also worrying that he said that after he started coughing on 20th Jan, he had several coronavirus tests come back negative before he eventually tested positive on 30th

Where did you read this? Very concerning. Begs the question how many of the other tests might have been faulty?
And who has he been in contact with for those 10 days?

ofwarren · 06/02/2020 17:04

What's the general consensus on the effectiveness of bleach compared to something like Dettol? I've just read on a pack of domestos toilet wipes, that they can actually be used on other hard surfaces. I wonder if these have more power to kill viruses?

wellididntseethatcoming · 06/02/2020 17:10

@ofwarren it says they kill flu virus on their website so potentially.

I hope the announcement you're talking about isn't just telling people with symptoms from certain other Asian countries to self isolate - that's just been announced.

Surely this isn't enough? We've still got direct flights from China coming in.....

Dyrne · 06/02/2020 17:21

Only small and necessary amounts of info are released to news outlets in order to prevent panic.

I can just imagine our incompetent government genuinely believes this. What kind of dinosaurs are leading this strategy as they seem to be using a 50 year old policy to inform strategy in a 21st century digital world?

“Hey, lets not release ANY Useful information or updates, meaning people get their information from wild speculation and unverified posts on social media. Sounds great, MBEs all round chaps”. Hmm
