Prepping for pandemic...

I was quite blasé about the novel corona virus outbreak but things I've read today have changed my mind.

I'm not usually a prepper but best things to stock up on for a pandemic?

Surgical face masks?
Latex gloves?
Anti bac wipes and hand wash?

Enough food for two weeks, a month in case of a lockdown? I would be really interested to hear others thoughts as I have been thinking about this today too.

imiss · 26/01/2020 14:08

Can I ask what you read that's made you believe this is necessary?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/01/2020 14:10

Enough to keep you fed and watered for a couple of weeks I’d imagine so you don’t have to venture out.

wheresmymojo · 26/01/2020 14:32

I'm not in panic mode but it could be serious so just thinking of precautions.

The replication rate appears to be somewhere between 2.6 - 3.8 (that means every person infected infects 2.6-3.8 other people, and in turn each of them infects the same).

This is a high replication rate. Other illnesses like measles have a higher rate but we have vaccinations against them.

It's difficult to assess what is really going on because China have form for not accurately reporting situations but look at their actions:

  • They have fully locked down an area of 40 million people
  • They are blocking roads in and out with large piles of rocks (over 8 foot high in some)
  • They are building 2 x additional pre-fab hospitals to hold 2,000+ patients in the next week

We don't yet know the mortality rate - while it currently seems reasonably low epidemic experts are expecting it to rise significantly as many of those infected in the past week won't have died yet

You can pass it on without being symptomatic. This is unfortunate as many people will spread it without being aware and it means screening people for temperatures, etc on incoming flights is ineffective to stop global spread.

Experts are estimating that the combination of the replication rate, the fact that it appears it may have up to 14 days incubation period and that you can spread it without symptoms = c. 200,000 cases by Feb 4

Many countries now evacuating their consulate staff and private citizens from China

I prep generally, although I'm pretty disorganised for a prepper, but I agree have a stock that would keep you going for a couple of weeks and don't forget things like soap, shampoo, bog roll, medicines.
We just don't know, do we? With the prevalence of travel and what you've said about infection rates, we could find ourselves also in lockdown. I'm not saying panic!

onalongsabbatical · 26/01/2020 14:43

Are the evacuating from China as a whole or the just the Wuhan region? Where are you getting your info OP?

BananaChocolateLump · 26/01/2020 14:46

From the daily mail by the looks of it.

OP stop fear mongering. It will do no one any good. Just bloody stop

wheresmymojo · 26/01/2020 14:47

You can track the spread here via John Hopkins Uni: gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6

OP posts:
MangoFeverDream · 26/01/2020 14:47

My understanding was just from Wuhan? There’s a US consulate there. No other staff are being removed elsewhere afaik

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/01/2020 14:48

This is the preppers section. OP is entirely justified to start a prepping thread on this subject. Hide the topic if you don’t like it.

wheresmymojo · 26/01/2020 14:48

Not from the Daily Mail 🙄

I'm just finding all the links to post them...

I can't imagine how awful it must be to live in this sort of mindset.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/01/2020 14:50

Well don’t then, it’s not obligatory.

wheresmymojo · 26/01/2020 14:54

Replication rate of lower estimate of 2.6 from Imperial College

The whole world can't go into lockdown. If you have the kind of life where it's possible for you and your family to remain indoors for an unspecified amount of time, plan for that.

gamerchick · 26/01/2020 14:55

It's a virus, your antibac won't work.

Airborne viruses can also enter through the eyes. What would you do about that?

Stay at home this year and don't travel while it's getting sorted.

I've a 3 month supply of grub n shit anyway.

Info about it appearing to be spread by people who are not symptomatic comes from The Lancet

@BananaChocolateLump

Happy now?

Nothing from the Daily Mail. It's from The Lancet, John Hopkins, Imperial College and other public health scientists.

Perhaps try validating your own thoughts before you accuse next time...

With a viral pandemic, all you can prep for is having enough supplies so you don't need to leave the house. Anti bac wont work and even the use of face masks is anecdotal. The only masks that would work are those with their own filtration system in.
