Prepping for pandemic...

I was quite blasé about the novel corona virus outbreak but things I've read today have changed my mind.

I'm not usually a prepper but best things to stock up on for a pandemic?

Surgical face masks?
Latex gloves?
Anti bac wipes and hand wash?

I looked at face masks on amazon a few days ago. Then just checked now. Lots out of stock or silly prices.

Face masks don't prevent inhalation of the virus but do help against spreading due to hand to face transmission and spluttering droplets.

As I said I'm not worrying about it yet but I am definitely on alert. 3% death rate and 2% recovery rate at these very early stages is surely not good.

onalongsabbatical · 27/01/2020 13:26

Wow! Hello prepper in Bulgaria! This is all getting proper exotic now. And with my disorganised stash of food and bits and bobs but no water or gas bottles, I feel like I'm just playing at prepping.

I do have a lot of Branston pickle, mango chutney, and good jam. And dried onions and peppers and carrots (from Amazon!)
Etc.

NewHorizons2020 · 27/01/2020 13:47

Is there any point in getting the pneumonia vaccination ? I've got two small children and am getting worried..

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/01/2020 14:27

The pneumonia vaccine won't protect against this unfortunately, it protects against a specific bacterial pneumonia. If you are in an at risk group then you might be eligible for it anyway. (I really need to speak to my gp about that!) Children under two get it as part of their vaccination program.

Thanks to some of the prepping for Brexit threads last year, I still have a good supply of tins and dried food, enough for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately I've used up toiletries and treats (as it became clear that we weren't heading for a no deal). Just ordered some extra neurophen for DD and some toiletries.

I suspect we'll need more than a couple of weeks worth of stuff if things really kick off but it's better than not having anything in. Am considering adding a bit to it this week...

kjhkj · 27/01/2020 14:46

As a result of this thread I now have the tracking page open in the corner of my screen. 100 new cases since 11am.

ofwarren · 27/01/2020 15:00

Where do you see the tracking info?

kjhkj · 27/01/2020 15:12

Its on the link at the start of the thread

BlackeyedSusan · 27/01/2020 15:23

It's just increased again. That is only confirmed cases. I expect there are lots of unconfirmed cases

onalongsabbatical · 27/01/2020 15:26

@ofwarren tracking link. gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6

Someone else posted this on another thread re masks
cambridgemask.com/shop/
I think they're the same ones as available on Amazon but straight from the company minus postage fees. Next day delivery.

Pebble21uk · 27/01/2020 15:57

Ah, sorry, as you were - just seen they are now shipping from USA warehouse due to shortages!

AnuvvaMuvva · 27/01/2020 16:01

@Kakfor

And there are some VERY strange things at play here

I'd like to hear more about this, please. I haven't been worried about this as I thought it was "just" a common cold virus, but I might be wrong!

DH came down with an awful cold on Saturday. He works with a Chinese team, who recently flew over to the U.K. I can't remember when, but it might have been about 2 weeks ago.

NewHorizons2020 · 27/01/2020 16:06

I think the Daily Mail have arrived ...

AnuvvaMuvva · 27/01/2020 16:10

I'm not the Daily Mail! Wash your mouth out. My mum reads that bunch of arse.

Wuhan is home to the highest level virus lab in China......

Yes I was reading all about this, scary stuff indeed.

Grasspigeons · 27/01/2020 17:00

The hospital building thing is very odd with the numbers of patients being released isn't it.
I think hand washing is probably the best defence for now. The face masks seem more about stopping spreading if you already have.

birdiefriend · 27/01/2020 17:27

I lurk on the prepping threads now and then, it's all very interesting, I'd rather be prepared for the worst and it not happen than not be prepared and something happen, however minor.
I'd say I'm fairly well prepped and could survive without gas, electricity, water or leaving my property.
This coronavirus has the potential to become very scary, equally it might not.

BestOption · 27/01/2020 17:31

@AnuvvaMuvva

Jesus. The world & his dog are worrying about this - what made you think ‘it’s just another common cold’? Your DH works with a Chinese Team who flew in about 2 weeks ago.😳 And he now has cold symptoms

I’m normally pretty calm, but if I were you I wouldn’t be.

Which area in China were they in before flying over?

AmelieTaylor · 27/01/2020 17:37

What’s the general consensus on proper masks?

I’m not sure if I think it’s ‘better safe than sorry’ or a ‘pointless expense/hassle’?!

I just looked at the ones on the link by Pickwuck (not bothered it’s coming in from the States) but when
I measured for it the small appeared to be the correct size - but it’s for chikdten up to 35kg - my leg probably weighs that!! The one for my weight would probably cover my entire head!

Why is everything always so bloody difficult!?

I’m down south (small village near a couple of bigger towns, not in a big city) I’m tending to think if it gets down here, a mask really isn’t going to make much difference & we are all going to be totally fucked anyway!

AmelieTaylor · 27/01/2020 17:43

@kjhkj - you said...

Face masks don't prevent inhalation of the virus

I’m a bit confused then as the website says

The carbon filter is also treated with silver to ensure almost 100% harmful pathogens are removed and killed AND ✔99.6% viral filtration efficiency and 99.7% bacterial filtration efficiency (tested by Nelson Labs USA)

What am I misunderstanding??

(Science is NOT my thing!)

kjhkj · 27/01/2020 18:13

The expensive ones may well prevent you inhaling the virus amelie but the surgical ones you see people wearing on tv don't stop much at all. You need the ones called N95 apparently since these are sealed around the edges but I think they are more difficult to breathe in. I'm no expert, its just what Ive read.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 27/01/2020 18:32

What about these ones? They are effective against Ebola apparently Confused
