can't remember what I watched pertaining to this, some drama when one of the characters was online talking about his prepping cue him being raided by people when the poop hit the fan

Its the channel 4 docudrama Blackout. Available on More4 or youtube. There's also a US one called American Blackout (I think) but it doesn't seem as realistic because obviously the US set up is very different to ours.

flameycakes · 10/01/2019 13:39

@cloudtree thank you, that was starting to do my noggin in x

cloudtree · 10/01/2019 13:39

I've already told my parents I'm not feeding them (I would of course probably but I want them to get their own supplies sorted). They have the space and the cash but are so far just humouring me with a couple of bags of pasta and a large bar of chocolate.

cloudtree · 10/01/2019 13:41

Coincidentally in blackout he gets found out when in his back garden using his BBQ and he agrees to give food to some locals who spot him over the fence.

flameycakes · 10/01/2019 13:41

@avacadosbeforemortgages they'd have to get past the cat for me, though I've got 2 6 footer sons and one getting there, mind I'm not to bad at growling x

cloudtree · 10/01/2019 13:42

For those who want to watch

bellinisurge · 10/01/2019 13:42

@AvocadosBeforeMortgages , If lights out are a worry for you generally (don't expect it with Brexit) i would recommend getting a hurricane lamp - cheap on EBay or putting a head torch pointing inwards to an old 4pint plastic bottle of milk filled with water. For a more relaxing ambient glow rather than just relying on torches for however long. Bit less stressful.

flameycakes · 10/01/2019 13:44

Anyone remember the bread strikes in the 70s, I was a kid so not too sure of exact dates, you could have knocked people out with my mams bread it was that dense x

flameycakes · 10/01/2019 13:44

I know how to make a kettle with a coke tin x

bellinisurge · 10/01/2019 13:45

Old enough to remember @flameycakes .

CatsForLife · 10/01/2019 13:54

I’m genuinely interested in this, a couple of friends are preppers but are people seriously expecting supply problems requiring £900-worth of groceries and supplies?!

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/01/2019 13:54

I've got a USB rechargeable head torch anyway for dog walking, and a wind up torch. I've also got a couple of power banks for my phone which will charge anything USB based.

Worst case scenario that I think is plausible would be rolling power cuts as per the Three Day Week. I don't think it's going to be days or weeks without power so recharging things becomes more plausible. For cooking I can switch between microwave / electric oven vs gas hob for cooking and gas boiler vs electric fan heater and hot water bottle as necessary. The dog is also a surprisingly good hot water bottle as he likes to sleep under the duvet!

FloralCup · 10/01/2019 13:57

Impressive list there avocado but why the disposable cutlery and paper plates?

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/01/2019 13:57

Yes, in the event of no deal brexit I anticipate significant supply problems.

However, very little is stuff I wouldn't have bought anyway so for the most part I have spent early rather than spent extra. I will either be very grateful I prepped, or (hopefully) brexit will be cancelled and I will simply have a few months of not needing to haul tins home from Asda.

bellinisurge · 10/01/2019 13:58

@CatsForLife , no of course not. Head over to the Prepper topic for some sensible budget friendly advice. If you want to.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/01/2019 13:58

@Floral I'm undecided as to whether or not I'll actually buy them, but if there was no safe water you don't want to be washing up more than necessary.

flameycakes · 10/01/2019 13:59

I've given up expecting anything at this time, I'm always prepared for the worst to happen anyway, I may joke and laugh about things but the thought of not being able to feed my family or to be without basics is abhorrent to me, if the lights went out I'd hope I'd manage to survive. Someone told me to keep tobacco to trade x

bellinisurge · 10/01/2019 13:59

Oops@CatsForLife , we are already thereBlush

flameycakes · 10/01/2019 14:00

Gone to find prepper thread x

bellinisurge · 10/01/2019 14:01

@flameycakes , I presume that considering your family over strangers or even neighbours doesn't actually constitute a stick up the arse approach, then .Grin

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/01/2019 14:01

I'd only keep tobacco to trade if you'll use it anyway. Spirits are probably equally tradeable and there are more drinkers than smokers out there.

The trouble with planning to taste is that those willing to buy probably have nothing to offer you because they didn't prep, and those who have something to offer you probably don't need it because they did prep.

CatsForLife · 10/01/2019 14:02

My only storage area wouldn’t be great for food. Tins maybe but nothing that mice could get into. Do people just buy extra bits each week or a big Costco shop?!

bellinisurge · 10/01/2019 14:03

@cloudtree , I watched a bit of it and was thankful that, as a prepper, my immediate reaction wouldn't be screaming panic.

flameycakes · 10/01/2019 14:04

Apart from my kids I prefer the neighbours to my nc family, I rather give them the foot up the arse approach any day 😘

flameycakes · 10/01/2019 14:05

9 days without nicotine, having baccy in the house wouldn't be a good idea at moment x
