2019 Brexit Preps

I thought it would be useful to have a thread as we head into the new year where we can discuss our Brexit preps.

Today I picked up all gift wrap and cards I will need for next Christmas which I would normally do anyway but I added some neutral gift wrap which could be used for birthdays. I also stashed a few toys in the sale which can be used for birthdays. The thought of the DC going without birthday presents is too sad.

I’ve also just stashed some lightbulbs, candles, lights and matches.

Going into 2019 I’m focusing on:
Solar chargers
Camping gas
Protein
Medicines
Box hair dye
Skincare
Loo roll and tissues + hankies
Cleaning products
Home brew kits
Books on self reliance

I have one. It's great.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 11/01/2019 21:10

Just ordered an ecoegg on back of this thread. We currently use the detergent made for our Miele machine but god knows if that will still be available....

lannister · 12/01/2019 11:11

Can anyone recommend tinned veg & meat please. I've only done sweetcorn & tuna. scared that nothing else will taste good and my kids are very fussy.

bellinisurge · 12/01/2019 12:04

My dd is fussy too. However, she will eat carrots and peas, for example, and potatoes. I suggest trialling a tin or two in a meal or two to get a feel for it yourself.

I saw the FT article. Apparently Mumsnet is only talking about frozen grapes and avocados. Fuckwits at the FT too, it seems.

cloudtree · 12/01/2019 12:33

I’ve been off work this week and on MN a lot. I haven’t seen any conversation about frozen grapes. Confused

cloudtree · 12/01/2019 12:34

Frozen grapes would be a stupid prep. Waste of space considering the calories to be gained.

Well I’ve clearly missed those threads.
That said, I do love a frozen grape when I’ve got a sore throat but they aren’t really part of my preps.

Thanks for this thread. I've been thinking about getting some prepping done for a while but actually picked up some extra stuff with the shop today and am going to get more of a plan in place. I like to batch cook anyway, so I'm going to devote some days when the kids are in school/nursery to that over the next couple of weeks, and make sure we've got tinned and dry non-perishables in to last us for a while, just in case.

GlowWine · 12/01/2019 16:31

Something I bought today to add variety: dried tortellini, from the Italian deli. not as good as fresh of course but quite okay, if added to a nice sauce. We eat a lot of pasta in this household....

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 12/01/2019 17:54

dried tortellini

We have quite a bit of this stashed away, it makes an easy meal with a splash of olive oil, some spinach and chilli flakes.

We also have dried gnocchi too, which is more than adequate for a lunch with pesto and fridge veg leftovers.

I couldn’t find dried tortellini or dried gnocchi in Tesco. Only fresh. Odd since I’m sure they always used to sell it

bellinisurge · 12/01/2019 17:59

Aldi does. Or did last time I checked.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 12/01/2019 18:05

Aldi, Lidl and Home Bargains have it. B&M might do it too.

Nacreous · 12/01/2019 18:21

Asda sell dried gnocchi too, not sure about tortellini.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2019 18:38

frozen grapes sounds like a real choking hazard!

Rubusfruticosus · 12/01/2019 19:02

I'm planning to buy some chapati flour for the freezer to make my own bread. We can easily do without leavened bread as we eat more flat breads like chapatis and tortillas already.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 13/01/2019 13:05

There’s dried gnocchi in our smaller tesco. Not sure if the bigger one has it though.

cloudtree · 13/01/2019 16:16

I shall drop into some different shops and see if they have dried gnocchi and tortellini. I cleared out and defrosted the freezer today and have lots of space for fruit and veg so will pick some up tomorrow.

I have two mangos and a pineapple dehydrating (which I shall then need to hide since its addictive..)

OohMrDarcy · 14/01/2019 15:22

I've bought a couple of packs of bread mix to give making it a go over the weekend. If it works I'll either buy some more, or just the right flour / fast acting yeast etc to be able to make my own. DD did bread at school last term so she can help!

Have also bought some fruit pots tropical / pineapple. They last a good while so as long as I hide them in the cupboard the DC won't notice until I want them to!

notmaryberry · 14/01/2019 15:43

Hello all. I haven't done much prepping, but just picked up a few extra bits for the store cupboard. I went to pick up some more today as the vote is tomorrow and I thought the tinned fruit shelves looked very bare! Also the long life milk and dried pasta didn't have much left. Has anyone else noticed that or was it just confirmation bias?

bellinisurge · 14/01/2019 15:45

I think it depends on what time you are there. For now.

ElyElyOy · 14/01/2019 16:08

Ive certainly noticed more “Bulk Buy” packs being sold in our local supermarkets: not that they are that much of a bargain and most of them seem to work out more expensive than buying smaller packs I reckon!

AdoraBell · 14/01/2019 16:19

I get my groceries delivered but did notice less in general on the shelves in Sainsbo’s at the weekend. That seemed to be across the board and, they had lots of things on offer, rather than just dried pasta and canned goods.

I saw a video on BBC about a Brexit Box, near on 300 quid but has 3 months worth of dried food plus a few other bits. Not sure I need that but I do want to stock up on Chilean wine in case the ports do get snarled up and prices sky rocket for things not from the EU 😁

Willowcat77 · 14/01/2019 16:20

I'm getting confused. I've been building up a small Brexit stockpile, thinking the chaos will begin in March, but now questioning if this is too early?

Apparently even after March our trade/customs arrangements with Europe will continue as normal in a "transition period" until December 2020 and might even extend for 2 years after this date . So we won't actually have left Europe as far as the single market is concerned.

So have I been premature in stockpiling this early? I hope someone more knowledgeable than me can explain. Thanks
