2019 Brexit Preps

I thought it would be useful to have a thread as we head into the new year where we can discuss our Brexit preps.

Today I picked up all gift wrap and cards I will need for next Christmas which I would normally do anyway but I added some neutral gift wrap which could be used for birthdays. I also stashed a few toys in the sale which can be used for birthdays. The thought of the DC going without birthday presents is too sad.

I’ve also just stashed some lightbulbs, candles, lights and matches.

Going into 2019 I’m focusing on:
Solar chargers
Camping gas
Protein
Medicines
Box hair dye
Skincare
Loo roll and tissues + hankies
Cleaning products
Home brew kits
Books on self reliance

UHT almond milk is amazing in hot chocolate - personally can’t tell the difference and usually has good dates. If you have a Heron near you they often have plant UHT milk very cheap. Alternatively if you have a good blender making your own fresh almond milk is quick easy and cheap :)

A lot of people seem quite worried on these MN stockpiling threads about what food to store in their Brexit Box. I’ve made a list here which might help. I’ve written a blog about it and 7 days of recipes to get people started. EatNotSpend. It can be used as a guide if you don’t like the recipes, but whatever you decide to do, don’t leave it til the last minute and panic buy.

Could you post a link to your blog about the recipes please, I'd be interested to have a look

Added a little to my Brexit cupboard today, teabags, water, squash, popping corn, curry kit, corn beef. Once payday rolls around in a couple of weeks I’ll put in an order for some other bits.

redhat · 15/02/2019 15:46

I added loo roll, lazy garlic, lazy ginger, lazy chilli, gravy granules, bi jar of olives.

redhat · 15/02/2019 15:46

big jar I don't think olives are particularly sexual beings.

londonloves · 15/02/2019 17:55

I've added batteries and water purifying tablets this week. No money now TIL end of month but after payday will get a few last bits for March.
Lost track of the parliamentary stuff but still thinking no deal likeliest outcome.

BlackeyedGruesome · 15/02/2019 21:33

I still need AAA batteries. Got some but need more.

Been writing shopping lists, they are very long. Weekly shop, plus forward purchasing.trying to remember everything and make sure we will be ok for a while.

Been forced to stay home as DC is I'll.

I am looking at trying to find an outdoor method of cooking that is not gas based and easy to manage with DC.

bellinisurge · 15/02/2019 21:40

Dutch oven?

Wolfcub · 15/02/2019 21:57

Blackeyr what about a Cobb?

Tidy2018 · 16/02/2019 06:44

After a conversation last night about servers and data breaches, I intend asking for printouts of my medical records and those of children.

13luckyblackcats · 16/02/2019 10:17

Just added 2 tubes of (generic) canesten to the medical preps as I needed it the other day and realised how awful it would be not to have it!

BlackeyedGruesome · 16/02/2019 22:23

Ooch, anyone else experiencing sympathetic symptoms?

Re outdoor cooking, I may try a Kelly kettle with pot holder for water, soup, beans etc. Is it possible to use the base as a very small fire pit?

We would need to use it in a shared area, or at ex,s though he has a barbeque with no fuel! If using it in a shared area, I would be filling neighbours flasks! Though this has advantages of them being less likely to complain. It would be payback for putting up with a noisy autistic boy and several neighbours have been very helpful in the past. Tricky.

A Kelly kettle would be easy to transport to somewhere quieter too if necessary, and fun for at my mum's or their dad's or on holiday.

I have a solar kettle for indoors on sunny afternoons. Otherwise we will have to manage with cold food if there are powercuts. Cold food not from the fridge or freezer: dry crackers and cold beans? Possibly tinned fruit and evaporated milk,

Maybe one ought to get in the habit of filling a flask with hot water daily. Hmm

It is quite difficult planning when in an inner city flat. I have access to a house but it is an hour's drive away. Not ideal. Or their dad's which only has a slabbed yard.

Going to buy some pots and grow courgettes possibly or outdoor tomatoes at their dad's. And other things on the windowsill here.

I think power and water supply problems are unlikely with Brexit. I'm a general prepper so I have that covered however I don't want people to freak out and think they aren't sufficiently prepared for Brexit if they don't have alternatives to the grid supply of power and water.
Always handy to have a e.g torch (windup is a good option- kids' ones are fine if that what you have) and to keep at least one phone in the house charged up.
There are other general prepping bits and bobs that general preppers on here can discuss with you. But not an essential for Brexit prepping. A bit of extra Food, on the other hand, is.

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/02/2019 09:00

I am thinking more that our supply has gone off before. We had a phase of water going off regularly. It was horrible as the first thing you knew that it had been off was usually in the middle of the night or half awake first thing inthe morning when the airlock in the loo pipes went off like a banger. then you had the same in everytap. part of the problem of being at the top of the supply pipe.

I have an autistic child who refuses to eat unless it is his safe food in the way that he likes and he needs to eat every couple of hours to help him behave, otherwise we get risky behaviour so food is important.

I only function with coffee.

We had water failure suring a bad snow storm in recent years, noone could get out to get water.

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/02/2019 09:03

oh and I was posting late at night when everything seems worse.

we are supposed to be on a priority liist due to children's disability.

not as priority as the those who need it for medical equipment, I suppose, but still on the list.

SparklySneakers · 17/02/2019 09:08

@bellinisurge I really hope you're right about power and wAter. I'm fairly well stocked for food, have 16 litres of water and will get more along with torches but I'm water and power issues are really worrying me. I have lots of candles as I buy them but never use them.

With regards to my mum I think she's still wavering between thinking extra food is a good idea and thinking hoping it's not necessary. I've decided to keeping buying things for her and not tell her. She's worried about affording it but she wouldn't notice £10 worth of extra things. This week I'm going to have a sort out of the 2 cupboards under the stairs so I can stash things in there. In fact I've just remembered there's a pretty much empty bookcase in one that would be perfect for tins and uht milk. I've made LO's hot chocolate with uht this morning and he's not commented so guess it's ok.

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/02/2019 09:10

Steve is on the radio now with is lardering...

and a small firm who are forward purchasing. 250k on extra stock.

redhat · 17/02/2019 09:16

“I don’t think anyone can guarantee anything”. “There is no need to stockpile” “I could probably live for a month on cereal based on my larder” - series of contradictions there from the minister on radio 4...

bellinisurge · 17/02/2019 09:21

I'm not listening to it - dd and dh watching Top Gear reruns instead. Curious as to how it's going. I'll see if it's on IPlayer/Sounds whatever for later.

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/02/2019 09:23

But not if he has not got any powdered milk!

londonloves · 17/02/2019 09:25

Anyone have any recommendations on dried egg? It looks super grim and I'm a bit reticent as I wouldn't normally use it, but the child is going through a "yellow food" phase and short of getting a chicken, not sure how I can keep up the scrambled egg supply!

SparklySneakers · 17/02/2019 09:27

Dry cereal is the way forward. I've always preferred it that way.

bellinisurge · 17/02/2019 09:30

I have frozen some with the yolks popped in ice cube trays. And ordered some powdered off Amazon.

For anyone looking at alternatives to candles, particularly for seniors or kids - again this is a general thing not a Brexit thing- get an old empty 4 pint plastic bottle (milk type). Fill with water. Strap on a head torch pointed inwards and the thing sort of glows. Nicer ambience.
