Beginner here - does this sound like a reasonable stockpile?

I've always liked to have a fair bit extra in, but thanks to MN I decided to get really organised and ensure I'm covered for (hopefully) every eventuality. It's actually really helped my anxiety as I feel a bit more in control.

Just wondered if anyone could take a look and see if this sounds reasonable prep wise, basically just got extra of what we normally eat in (for three of us) - feel like I'm missing obvious things!

Cupboard Stuff
Red/Green Pesto: 10 jars
Beans/Spaghetti hoops: 10 tins
Pasta Sauce: 10 jars
Curry Paste: 5 jars
Veg - peas/new potatoes/carrots/spinach - 5 tins each
Black Beans - 5 cans
Butter Beans - 5 cans
Broad Beans - 5 cans
Mixed Beans - 5 cans
Kidney Beans - 4 cans
Ravioli - 5 cans
Soups - mixed - 10 cans
Rice - 1kg + a selection of microwavable packs
Couscous - mixed selection of individual packs
Lentils - 1kg
Quinoa - 500g
Pasta - 1kg
Spaghetti - five packs
Passata - 8 cartons
Chopped Tomatoes - 10 cans
Tomato Puree - 3 tubes
Tuna - 10 cans
Peas - 4 cans
Corned beef - 2 cans
Sardines in sauce - 5 packs
Mackerel - 5 packs
Stewing steak - 3 tins
Jumbo Oats
Weetabix
Muesli
2 litre bottles water - 5
2kg coffee beans
Tea bags - mix
Hot Chocolate - big tub of powdered
Long life milk (currently 4 cartons will probably pick up more)
Tortillas - 2 packs
Mix of herbs and marinades/rubs
Slow cooker sauce packs
Mixed nuts
Nut Butters/Nutella/Marmite/Marmalade and Honey

Frozen
Avocado
Onions
Peppers (mixed)
Cabbage
Spinach
Herbs
Peas/sweetcorn
Carrots
Broc + cauli
Meat - assorted
Fish fillets
Fish Fingers [ who doesn't love a fish finger sandwich?!]
ice cream
Bread
Just Rol Pastry - two packs

Household
Candles (two bags tealights plus various)
Solar lamp + charger
three 6 litre collapsable water containers [empty but ready to go]
Torches x 2
Toilet Rolls (50)
Mouthwash & toothpaste [bulk packs of each]
Batteries
Full first aid kit including bandages, plasters, wound wipes, antiseptic cream, cold + flu tablets and sachets, digestion aids and medicines, paracetamol and ibuprofen, migraine tablets, allergy tablets

Plan to get
Camping stove/hob [we have regular power outages - not sure they'd be ideal for inside though?]
Life straws x 3
Couple more torches
Baby wipes
Soap
Laundry Powder
Energy Bars [less about prepping, more about DH loving them for walking holidays but handy none the less]

Now I've written it all down, I probably sound a bit OTT? But the snow last year really made me see I needed more in, especially if we get hit with a power cut around the same time [I know I can't 100% rely on my freezer stores but I like to have it stocked incase we get ill/can't get out for a few days or i'm too lazy to think about what to eat!]
Do you think I've missed anything obvious?

I think you have given me a few ideas that I need when I am building my stocks up anyway it's a good start but you need more protein and water like more corned beef, stews tinned steak, ham, tuna, tea, coffee and sugar don't forget matches as I have. Anyway glad to see I'm not alone .

BlueEyedBengal · 31/07/2018 00:35

Don't forget chocolate and sweets for energy.

pennycarbonara · 31/07/2018 00:56

Do you (or does someone in the house) actually like all these things, so they'd get used up anyway? (Don't buy any more corned beef if no one likes it, for example)

There seems to be tons of stuff to go with pasta, but very little actual pasta (rice etc)

Maybe no-one likes mushrooms of course but there are quite a few potential dishes there that could benefit from mushrooms. (The tinned ones can be nice, and a few large supermarket branches also do frozen sliced.)

I assume you already have various herbs and spices and aren't counting those.

Have you tested the solar charger out with your phones? Some of them don't seem to be that great with more sophisticated devices. A power pack to go in the middle and make sure the current is correct might be a good idea. Also power packs are useful to carry about anyway, if you have a phone that loses charge easily and you are out and about all day away from sockets

mmmgoats · 31/07/2018 09:26

Thanks @blueeyedbengal good shout! Had completely forgotten about matches, I have a selection of gas lighters but obviously they wouldn't last forever! How could I have forgotten CHOCOLATE?!

@pennycarbonara yes we eat all these things - my guilty pleasure is corned beef hash (lazily made) or corned beef toasted sandwiches!
You're right about pasta/rice - I potentially need to get more and some meat/more things to go with them in actual dishes.
I'm struggling a bit with meat as we generally only eat fresh - obviously if the shtf then we would adapt our tastes but I don't want to get a cupboard full of tinned meat we would never eat.

I have tested the solar charger out - it's slower than mains obviously but does seem to work quite well (we have a juliette balcony with a ledge I can rest it on so it's actually outside as it doesn't work so well through a window although it still works.
Power pack is a great shout - do you have any recommendations?
And yy to herbs and spices, a massive cupboard stacked full.

water purification tablets.

Also, if you get more, go for things that you can eat without cooking

Clairetree1 · 31/07/2018 09:32

do you have a good old fashioned fm radio?

mmmgoats · 31/07/2018 13:07

water purification tablets, excellent addition.
And yes I do - it's battery powered as well as mains and I have a LOT of batteries (and keep picking up more, I've always been a battery hoarder!).

Thanks!

What sort of non-cooking food do you recommend? My brain has gone stupidly blank.

I'd add more water and new potatoes, more pasta/carbs as has been pointed out.

You mentioned winter time, last winter our pipes froze which wasn't a big problem as we had some electric heaters and extra blankets. We used some duck tape to throw up extra blankets at the windows too when it got that bad.

We keep alcohol gel and a surgical disinfectant spray and wipes ready to use too.

We also keep "go-bags" as something to grab primarily if one of us goes go hospital complete with clothes, towel, a bit of cash etc.

I would add flour into your stash in case the freezer failed, you would then be able to make bread.

Do you have any pets?

Do you have any prescription meds?

Whatthefoxgoingon · 31/07/2018 13:22

Imodium
San pro
Antiseptic cream
Wind up radio
Power banks for mobiles
Antibacterial wipes/gel

I’d add more rice and pasta. We are huge carb eaters Grin

Sorry if I missed any of those in your list! You’re pretty well set up.

niketrainersarecomfy · 31/07/2018 13:24

Water purification tablets GrinGrin

Namethecat · 31/07/2018 13:27

Why coffee beans ? You'd need a grinder plus electricity to grind them.

Namethecat · 31/07/2018 13:28

Also sanitary towels/tampons.
First aid box

KimCheesePickle · 31/07/2018 14:03

Coffee beans - you can get manual hand grinders.

For longer term prepping, consider buying green unroasted beans in bulk, which have a much longer shelf life. Then roasting yourself in a pan on the fire, or I have heard about using a popcorn maker.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2018 14:23

@KimCheesePickle - I've actually done this - in a different country.
I brought home my hand coffee grinder because sitting with pals grinding coffee beans was a nice social event.

mmmgoats · 31/07/2018 15:07

I've got a bean to cup machine, although i suppose that won't be much good if the power goes out!

Thanks for the suggestions. Adding big bags of pasta and rice to my online shop as we speak.
I have a couple of bread mix packs that I've come across, but will add flour and ingredients to the list as well.

Struggling a bit with non-cook food ideas.

Chemical toilet & chemical stuff for short term emergencies. You'd be amazed how much literal crap four people can produce in a short amount of time. Source - grew up in cold US state - lots of snow ensuring we were cut off from the world for lots of the year!

bellinisurge · 31/07/2018 15:18

By "non-cook", do you rule out "add boiling water and simmer "?

Doggood · 31/07/2018 15:20

But..... why???

mmmgoats · 31/07/2018 15:29

@dogood I love having a fully stocked kitchen and organised house. Nothing to do with any one event, it just makes me feel efficient and organised and prepared.
Last year I got flu for two weeks, then DH came down with it and it was a nightmare as we didn't have enough in and had to keep ordering food we didn't really want and eventually dragged ourselves out to the supermarket in the freezing cold - a trip I still remember vividly for all the wrong reasons.

Not for everyone, when I lived in London I used to live very much shop to shop, but now I prefer this way. I like not having to worry about shopping for ages! And to know I have plenty if anything does go wrong.

OP posts:
mmmgoats · 31/07/2018 15:30

@bellinisurge I'm not sure really - I guess if we had a prolonged power outage I could use my gas portable hob (we had one that lasted three days last year and I didn't have that option- it was an eye opener!). So I guess boil and simmer would be okay...

bellinisurge · 31/07/2018 15:36

If you are getting into dehydrating, take a look at 1960HikerDude and KevinOutdoors for backpacking meals that are "just add water to rehydrate then keep warm".
They talk about using a homemade reflective pot cover to keep things warm. Take a look and see if there is something that would suit you.

confusedmummy76 · 31/07/2018 15:47

Why? I don't understand why? Lol

RedneckStumpy · 31/07/2018 15:53

You lost seems good, I would also add

Sanitary products
A go bag
Flour yeast and sugar for bread making
1/5th bottles of vodka for trading (cigarettes too)

RedneckStumpy · 31/07/2018 15:54

Doggood

Why not?

abitoflight · 31/07/2018 16:00

Sturdy bin bags?
If disruption to waste collection, emergency waterproofing?
