Beginner here - does this sound like a reasonable stockpile?

I've always liked to have a fair bit extra in, but thanks to MN I decided to get really organised and ensure I'm covered for (hopefully) every eventuality. It's actually really helped my anxiety as I feel a bit more in control.

Just wondered if anyone could take a look and see if this sounds reasonable prep wise, basically just got extra of what we normally eat in (for three of us) - feel like I'm missing obvious things!

Cupboard Stuff
Red/Green Pesto: 10 jars
Beans/Spaghetti hoops: 10 tins
Pasta Sauce: 10 jars
Curry Paste: 5 jars
Veg - peas/new potatoes/carrots/spinach - 5 tins each
Black Beans - 5 cans
Butter Beans - 5 cans
Broad Beans - 5 cans
Mixed Beans - 5 cans
Kidney Beans - 4 cans
Ravioli - 5 cans
Soups - mixed - 10 cans
Rice - 1kg + a selection of microwavable packs
Couscous - mixed selection of individual packs
Lentils - 1kg
Quinoa - 500g
Pasta - 1kg
Spaghetti - five packs
Passata - 8 cartons
Chopped Tomatoes - 10 cans
Tomato Puree - 3 tubes
Tuna - 10 cans
Peas - 4 cans
Corned beef - 2 cans
Sardines in sauce - 5 packs
Mackerel - 5 packs
Stewing steak - 3 tins
Jumbo Oats
Weetabix
Muesli
2 litre bottles water - 5
2kg coffee beans
Tea bags - mix
Hot Chocolate - big tub of powdered
Long life milk (currently 4 cartons will probably pick up more)
Tortillas - 2 packs
Mix of herbs and marinades/rubs
Slow cooker sauce packs
Mixed nuts
Nut Butters/Nutella/Marmite/Marmalade and Honey

Frozen
Avocado
Onions
Peppers (mixed)
Cabbage
Spinach
Herbs
Peas/sweetcorn
Carrots
Broc + cauli
Meat - assorted
Fish fillets
Fish Fingers [ who doesn't love a fish finger sandwich?!]
ice cream
Bread
Just Rol Pastry - two packs

Household
Candles (two bags tealights plus various)
Solar lamp + charger
three 6 litre collapsable water containers [empty but ready to go]
Torches x 2
Toilet Rolls (50)
Mouthwash & toothpaste [bulk packs of each]
Batteries
Full first aid kit including bandages, plasters, wound wipes, antiseptic cream, cold + flu tablets and sachets, digestion aids and medicines, paracetamol and ibuprofen, migraine tablets, allergy tablets

Plan to get
Camping stove/hob [we have regular power outages - not sure they'd be ideal for inside though?]
Life straws x 3
Couple more torches
Baby wipes
Soap
Laundry Powder
Energy Bars [less about prepping, more about DH loving them for walking holidays but handy none the less]

Now I've written it all down, I probably sound a bit OTT? But the snow last year really made me see I needed more in, especially if we get hit with a power cut around the same time [I know I can't 100% rely on my freezer stores but I like to have it stocked incase we get ill/can't get out for a few days or i'm too lazy to think about what to eat!]
Do you think I've missed anything obvious?

Fair enough @TheGoldenWolfFleece , as I said below, you don't need to be a prepper to put stuff by in case of emergencies.
A few people have made their way over to the Prepper topic but there have been a few of these discussions on Brexit threads. Preppers like me have been in those to try and get people to be realistic and practical. It has spurred a few people to head over here too.

It really is a bit of prepper thing to only stock what you eat. Longer term you look at renewable stocks and growing your own rather than a hundred jars of pesto under your bed.

StealthPolarBear · 02/08/2018 07:33

Only 50toilet rolls? We use that in a normal week :o

StealthPolarBear · 02/08/2018 07:33

No tissues op. We ran out with streaming colds last Christmas. Was not pretty!

Norugratsatall · 02/08/2018 08:07

@bellinisurge ??!?? I did not query why you're doing this. I suggested some items for OP's stockpile!Confused

bellinisurge · 02/08/2018 08:11

Apologies @Norugratsatall I tagged you in error in the response. I meant to tag @TheGoldenWolfFleece .

mmmgoats · 02/08/2018 08:14

@thegoldenfleece guilty as charged! I do also use pesto as a marinade for chicken and other meat but am going to get more pasta as other posters have pointed out - DH is obsessed with the stuff! Grin

@stealthpolarbear oooh good shout!

Re power outages, if you don’t want a generator but want to be sure you can charge phones/iPads etc, you could buy some power-blocks with usb/iPhone sockets.

For about £25-40 you can get Phone sized power blocks with 2 or 3 fold out solar panels HOWEVER the functionality of the panels isn’t great, they are not big enough to charge the block fully (would take several days)... so the panels are more of “will charge the phone enough to give a few mins to make emergency calls” sort of back up, they wouldn’t allow you to be on Mn/Facebook all day!

Normal power blocks are cheap but you need to remember to charge them regularly... they discharge after a few weeks.

For about £70 you can get bigger fold out solar panels (back pack size), which can charge phones or power blocks properly, and for about £5 you can get led lightbulbs with usb cables that will run off the blocks (candles are cheaper of course but also much more dangerous).

Cheap solar storm lanterns (in shops like The range, garden Centers with a small panel on them, even here in north Scotland, will charge enough during the day to provide several hours of soft light...

bellinisurge · 02/08/2018 09:18

I agree @lettuceWrap . Also have hurricane lamps but only because I got them cheap.
Head torches are ace . You can use them for yourself and keep your hands free but also put them facing in around an old 4litre milk bottle filled with water for a lantern. Diffuses the light in a non scary way.

cloudtree · 02/08/2018 09:20

We bought some solar garden lights. I wanted some for the garden anyway so it isn't a waste of money or something we won't use. They're currently lining the driveway and serving their normal purpose, however if we did have any power issues they could be brought inside in the evening and stuck into a vase then just recharged the next day.

bellinisurge · 02/08/2018 09:23

Exactly, make the best of what you have.

mmmgoats · 02/08/2018 09:54

Agreed. If i was prepping for the end of the world, i might think differently but as it is i’m mainly prepping for a week or two of difficulty max caused by all manner of things so I prefer to just get extras of what I’m already using rather than a load of tinned chilli or whatever that we don’t normally eat.
Same with lamps etc - items we already use for camping that are handy to have as a back up.

I generally work on the basis of 4 weeks. Hopefully most potential issues could be dealt with in that time. As such, the bulk of my supplies are just normal food things that we would (or could) eat without making big changes.

So lots of pasta/rice/cous cous and pesto/sauces in my pantry coupled with a good supply of chocolate!

petrolpump28 · 02/08/2018 20:36

i have a cow tethered outside.

AdaColeman · 02/08/2018 20:41

Have you got enough dried pasta and tinned potatoes to go with that amount of mince though petrol? That's what you need to ask yourself.

dementedma · 02/08/2018 20:59

ok, you have all convinced me.
My stockpile has begun and so far consists of one bag of rice, one bag of lentils, and one tin of tomatoes!!!
got to start somewhere....

bellinisurge · 02/08/2018 21:04

Well done @dementedma . Just focus on what you will eat,

cloudtree · 03/08/2018 09:46

Every extra person on board with a few weeks of food stockpiled helps the whole country.

GoneWishing · 03/08/2018 14:25

I was asked in a shop today if I was stockpiling, by the shop assistant, so I guess the idea is out there now!

I wasn't doing a particularly stockpiley shop, either. They had the coffee we like on a good offer, so I grabbed a few, and there were a few tins in my basket. (They happened to have tuna in spring water, which has been oddly missing on the shelves lately around here, and is my preferred tuna - and DCat's too!)

IAmInsignificunt · 03/08/2018 16:50

I went into Aldi earlier and a girl of about 8 said to her parents “don’t forget to save some money for the tins!”

ElyElyOy · 03/08/2018 22:39

Someone asked me if I was stock piling this week with my 10 large bars of chocolate. I wasn’t sure if it was better to pass it off as part of my secret “crazy prepper” life, or admit to being greedy Grin

bellinisurge · 04/08/2018 06:33

Grin. At least if more people are doing it they won't come to me.

TooManyPaws · 04/08/2018 22:30

Oooh, Amazon Deal of the Day is a dehydrator reduced to £25 from £70; they must have been reading along! 😂 I've got three paraffin big lamps locally too as I've lost power for several days before.

cloudtree · 05/08/2018 08:42

My dehydrator is working double shifts at the moment with the courgette glut. Thy just keep coming!

bellinisurge · 05/08/2018 17:26

Dehydrating stuff is pretty addictive. Lots of Fruit and veg are in season at the moment so relatively cheap and at their best. Even better in sept and October.
