How much did your prem baby weigh....

rascal1979 · 01/03/2008 20:13

At birth (and what was the gestation), 6mths and 12mths.

I know you can't compare babies but just curious to see how much weight prem babies put on and if it is at a similar rate to term babies.

My DD weighed 2lb 1oz at birth.
Was born at 30 +6 but small for dates/IUGR.
She's now 11 wks and weighs 4lb 7oz.

6 months 14lb.15oz
12 months 21ll14oz

She's 4 in a few weeks and weighs 3 stone and is very very tall for her age.

rascal1979 · 03/12/2008 09:03

Thanks for all the replies on here since this thread was started back in March. DD is coming up to her first birthday - in just under two weeks - and it looks as though she will be under 14lb

She has put weight on at a steady rate but less so for the past 6 weeks or so.

She has lost 3oz over the past couple of weeks due to a tummy bug and currently weighs 13lb 6oz.

However I am much more laid back about her weight (still stress some days but no where near as much as I did!) and try to focus more on her development - she is doing really well even almost walking!!

Although I was told yesterday that at a year they stop correcting her age so her weight on the centile chart is going to look really low as it is corrected by 9 weeks at the moment(currently this puts her about 0.5kg below the 0.4th centile) ho hum

sooo babyrascal turned one yesterday and weighs a mighty 13lb 12oz!! Wanted to make 14lb and thought maybe the birthday cake she ate at weekend may have helped tip the scales but sadly not!

Thanks for all your replies!!

Blueash · 18/03/2009 15:08

My granddaughter was born IUGR and is only gaining weight very slowly about 2 ounces per week. She was not premature because she was growing slowly and they decided to leave her inside the womb.

At birth she was 5lb 6 ounces and at

20 weeks only 8lb 12 ounces.

I found this site via a search engine because I wanted to know if IUGR babies developed differently and it seems that they can. Anyway the bottom line is that they may have gone into a catabolic state (almost like starvation) and can take a while to come out of it.

If you try and give a great deal of food to someone that has been starved you mess up the body chemistry (try a Google search on it) and it can be dangerous. Perhaps an IUGR baby's body somehow knows this but they obviously cannot do experiments on human babies.

Anyway my daughter-in-law did cave in to the pressure to get the baby on to formula but it does not seem to have speeded up her growth. I am relieved to have found that other babies gain at her rate and are being loved and looked after because my daughter-in-law feels as if the HV thinks she is neglecting the baby.

caramelwaffle · 11/04/2009 11:51

Daughter was born weighing 1lb 10oz

She is now utterly gorgeous and weighs approximatly 2 st

Deemented · 16/04/2009 09:03

Ciaran was 2lb 4oz and Boyo was 2lb 14oz. They were born at 28w 3days.

Boyo's four and a half now and weighs about 32lb.

swerve · 06/05/2009 17:42

my twins were 1.6kg and 1.8 kgs, born at 33+6. Just got them home after 2 1/2 wks in scbu so we are celebrating!

As a premie myself (36wks and 2kgs - but this was quite a long time ago!), trust me, we catch up - maybe not in the first year or 2, but we get there! And judging from the neighbour's son who at one point held the record for being the uk's smallest surviving baby (now a teenager), he clearly has no problem catching up. He's so tall!

glaskham · 07/05/2009 10:24

DD2 was 4lb at birth, 32wks. currently weighs 5lb11oz at 11wks (tomorrow).

she's just dropped off the centiles and i had given her formula for a couple of weeks but decided on my better judgment to stop and i'm happy i did but i do feel i may be holding her back a little... though she's averaging around 2.5oz a week on my calculations. and she was very ill at 4wks old and lost weight after she'd started gaining.

Kewcumber · 07/05/2009 10:26

980gr (err think thats about 2lb) at 26 weeks.

Would have to look up later weights in red book. But at 3.5yrs at 25% on charts.

carlacally · 11/05/2009 14:12

connor was born 26 weeks at 2lb sadly my little angel died at 36 weeks

Upwind · 28/05/2009 17:44

DD 4lbs 4 when born at 37 weeks exactly
11 lbs 2 at 20 weeks

I can't comment on your grandchild, but that frightens me. My IUGR baby was induced early and tube fed formula in SCBU for several days. Her weight gain has subsequently been normal and she is now on the chart and creeping up the centiles.

kykaree · 16/06/2009 08:12

Joseph 27 weeks 1 lb 10oz (since been told this was with a hat and tube on so should be 1 lb 7oz

He's now almost six weeks old and weighs 2 lb 7 oz! Good boy!

redtabby · 19/06/2009 18:17

My baby boy (now three weeks old, was 36 weeks and also IUGR) was 4lb 6oz (1.985kg). Today he weighed in at 2.35kg, which is over 5lb, BIG celebration here!!

ifnotwhynot · 28/06/2009 08:55

Son was 2lb 14oz at 29 weeks, 17lb at a year and to give everyone out there some hope, he is now 15yrs and 5ft 10ins, although I haven't a clue how much he weighs!!

beemail · 11/07/2009 13:46

1.2kg at 28 wks
Now 13 and "petite" not thin and absolutely fine - around 6 st - v v rarely goes near scales!
Did feel quite anxious initially but learnt to relax as I appreciated that other things are more important than weight despite other people's comments!!
However - not sure what brought me to this thread (NEVER been here before!)but am quite interested in the progress that those of low birth weight make and wanted to reassure if poss I guess
