Severe IUGR baby to be born at 30/31 weeks

My SIL has been taken into hospital to be given steroids in preparation... they've been currently told maybe the 27th but to prepare for their son to arrive over Christmas...

My brother and his girlfriend are very young and nieave, has anyone got any experience with this? They are just excited to see him, and aren't really worried.

I was admitted to hospital over 3 weeks ago at 31+2 and told I was developing preeclampsia, on the Saturday they had to give me two steroid injections over a twelve hour period and my family was told it was potentially a decision between me or my baby and on the Sunday I had an emergency section to deliver our little girl at 31+5, I felt the same I was so excited at the fact I didn't have to wait till end of Jan to meet her. it's only when she arrived and I was told she was going to neonatal that it hit me how hard both I am baby are poorly! Three weeks old today she is breathing alone and off all monitors. Prem babies are warriors and I'm sure it will be a safe delivery and baby will be well looked after and be a fighter like my little girl!

Glad to hear your little girl is doing so well! My sil has been admitted now and the arrival could be either tomorrow or the next day, so a little Christmas baby. He's not moving at all, but they said his heart beat is fine... so this worrying I don't know!? They were supposed to do a scan today.... but they said they didn't have anyone to do it! It's such a worrying time.

The last we knew he was 2.11 lbs so very tiny

My son was born at 28+3 with severe IUGR, the umbilical cord was reversing the flow so he was starved of all he needed, only getting a fraction of what he should, he had bradycardia too. I was pumped with steroids for 2/3 days then I had him by emergency caesarean. He was smaller than expected in weight but longer then they thought he'd be! He weighed 1lb 10oz and struggled to put on weight. He was intubated and then cpaped and then intubated. Was in hospital for 3 months. He's now 10, small for his age, struggles at school, has emotional issues (anger and cries a lot for a 10yo), a touch autistic (not diagnosed), very weak in his limbs but a lovely lovely boy! I honestly thought he wouldn't make it and I think the doctors didn't too, but he DID!!!

My dn was born at 30 weeks. Was a tiny baby (3.5 pounds) and is now 99% on growth percentiles (height and weight) and is very intelligent. Too intelligent sometimes lol.

My son was born at 30+6 weeks. He was in hospital for 3 months and back in 3 times in the first year. It was very tough, I also had an 18 month old and 2 older dds who were 5&7. He's almost 13 now and is autistic and struggles with concentration, but he's lovely and very bright. It's hard but it gets better. Since it's their first baby it might be less of a shock than it might otherwise be as they don't have the experinence of a normal birth to compare it too. I wish them well, it's difficult Flowers

DD wasn't prem at 38 weeks but was IURG and there were concerns about my BP and the flow through the chord. At 32 weeks the scans estimated her to be 3lb and by 38 weeks they thought she'd only gained 1lb. They were wrong and she was 5lb 1oz at birth. Apparently the scans can be out by 10%.

We spent some time in special care but once she got feeding she's really flown and is now on the 25th percentile.

Thankyou all for your replies, glad to hear that your babies have all done well, that's very reassuring..

He's not getting enough oxygen at the moment, and has reduced movements... they have been waiting for a scan since yesterday and have been told they need to wait until tomorrow unless there's a cancellation! It's outrageous, this is a little baby's life at stake and they won't do it because there's scheduled scans.

I just hope to god everything is ok with him, there was talks of taking him to a more specialist hospital but they won't do it until they've had the scan... so we're all worried he deteriorates and has to have a c section and there isn't enough care for him at this hospital

I was lucky op as they reserved the scanner for me every morning and the operating theatre was reserved for me too! Maybe if that's not been done for your SIL then the baby isn't at such a high risk? I'm just guessing and trying to reassure you a little!

I hope everything is ok. I can't understand why they can't scan. In the hospital I was at they had portable scanners in the labour and delivery sure and the consultant did the scan rather than a sonographer.

Dd2 was born at 30 weeks.
She was 2lb 11 and has never had any problems.

I was admittes to hospital at 33 weeks with IUGR, pumped full of steroids and told to prepare for an early delivery. I was then transferred to a different hospital 20 miles away as the one I was in didnt have any space on neonatal. The new hospital didnt seem particularly concerned and discharged me after 48hrs.
I was then referred back to original hospital for weekly scans and consultants appointments and we were seeing how it was going week to week with the hope that I would make it until at least 37 weeks. Baby decided differently and my waters broke at 36+4 and baby arrived the following day weighing in at 5lb2 (smaller than anticipated on scans).

Hello I'm sorry for the late reply, I have been dealing with a miscarriage myself. My sil has been admitted to hospital and is having the baby tomorrow... he's doing really well and has grown, but apparently the blood flow around his head is too much... but apparently that should sort itself out once he's born.

It's quite a bitter sweet time for me, as I should still be pregnant now too, but just trying to focus on my little nephew xx

How did it go? 6 losses must be so tough. I've had some losses myself so I no how difficult it must be, I really hope things work out for you.

He's been born and is doing really well, he was 3.13lbs so not as tiny as we thought... so so relieved he's doing so well.

It is really hard, I have an issue with my blood which is making me lose my babies, but hopefully next year will be my year xx

That's a good weight, my DD was 3lb4 and she had a relatively smooth time, I hope your nephew does too, how are the parents coping?

Really hoping it is your year, such a sad place to end this one but hopefully there are better things to come for you

I hope this is your year too princess. I've never had a loss but as I've said up thread my son was very poorly when born and that was hard enough so I can only imagine the pain you've suffered. ❤️

Hi, he has been transferred to brighton (well he was supposed to have been hours ago but still hasn't left yet!!!) he's got suspected Necrotizing enteriocolitos! Does anyone know anything about this? From what I've read online it's extremely serious

It can be very serious, I've read about it but didn't experience it personally. What I will say is that NICU isn't like the rest of the NHS in my experience, we started off in a high grade hospital and the treatment is amazing, they saw problems coming before they really got going and treated in anticipation of infections etc, they had higher staff numbers and budget than I expected so please try and be reassured that he will get great treatment and is in good hands. Hopefully they manage to transfer him soon
