Scared about taking the abortion pill.

Hi, I'm new here and just wanted some advice/reassurance about taking the abortion pill at 5weeks and 2days. Found out I was pregnant on June 30th I'm 24 with partner 24. We immediately decided we did not want the baby due to many reasons. I had a phone call with my local clinic today and I'm going into my appointment on Wednesday and planning to take the first pill on Thursday and the main pills on Saturday. Please tell me about your experiences, I'm really worried but would appreciate non sugar coated versions. Thank you!

Hey, I have been through this around 5/6 years ago.

It wasn't fun, but it wasn't awful. Initially it was like bad period pains and a heavy period with clots. However I thought it was over after a couple of hours besides some bleeding but I was wrong! I woke in the night to very extreme pain, similar to contractions, I'd say it only lasted an hour or two and stopped the second I passed the baby in the toilet. I was around 8 weeks and I could make out the shape of a baby. I think it was more mentally scarring than physically. The worst of the pain didn't last long and if you make sure you take regular pain relief you should be ok x

Ttcmumma · 04/07/2023 18:13

Sorry I missed out the part about the extreme pain in the night being 2-3 nights later! I thought it was all done before x

thank you very much for sharing! I’m quite nervous but I know it’s for the best. I just hope it all goes smoothly with no complications. We’re you given codine? Ive not had it before and I’ve heard it helps a lot but also having some anxiety around symptoms of that too!

I had one last year at 9 weeks... at its peak it was like period pain, but I did take codeine just incase.

I just made sure I had nothing on that day (had a complete duvet day), and that my partner was home just incase anything didn't go as expected.

andjustlikewhat · 04/07/2023 18:34

Oh and just to add I didn't look down!

Ttcmumma · 04/07/2023 20:41

@chesschamp99 they didn't give me anything when I had my abortion 😅 so I only had paracetemol at home. Tho I had codiene when I was in labour with my son and it helped massively so can imagine it'll really help the abortion pains. The only side affect of codiene I had was it made me super sleepy, I slept in-between contractions and while pushing 🤣. And dw the labour was a later pregnancy it wasn't the abortion pills failing! Lol

Thank you for the advice! I’ve been getting so worked up reading some of the stories on here and it’s really stressed me out, but it seems like at its worst it’s manageable. I very much appreciate the comments as eve though I have my partner (I’m well aware many women go through this completely alone!) nobody apart from us know and I just feels kinda weird.

@chesschamp99 I didn't tell anyone either, my partner was with me and it was more his choice than mine really but I knew deep down it was for the best. It's a weird and confusing thing to go through but you'll come out the other side. Wishing you luck and a smooth process x

chesschamp99 · 04/07/2023 20:51

Ahh to be honest I think I will take them! It does sound like they work. Glad to hear the pills worked for you!

Hey 👋 glad you're making a decision that is right for you xx

I took this 6 years ago I had light cramping and I would say what feels like a very clotty period when you use the loo.

It wasn't traumatic and like others have said I just didn't look down xx

Thank you for the message! I hope it all goes smoothly! X

At 5 weeks the foetus is 2mm, the size of a sesame seed so whether you look or not you're unlikely to see anything.

Delahays · 04/07/2023 21:11

I had one about 2 years ago.
For me it was just like light period pains. Before i took them i took paracetamol & ibuprofen then got in bed with a hot water bottle. They did give me some codeine but i never took them as the cramps never got that bad.
Good luck & hope you have a smooth process xx

Hi, this is my experience with medical abortion around 10 years ago. I was 5w6days when I took the first pill, then took the second 2 days later I believe. I took the day off work after the second pill, I would recomend that as it's nice to be in your own space. I found that it was not painful - exactly the same as normal period pains, and to be honest the blood loss was exactly the same too. I took paracetemol every 4 hours for a day, but I may have been fine without it. I did have a duvet day with a hot water bottle, but I would likely have coped otherwise. There is nothing to see at this stage - just a few small clots as you would have in your regular period. For me it was very straightforward, non painful, and not upsetting. But do look after yourself, and take time to look after yourself mentally and physically.

Thank you very much, this is reassuring as I will be having it the around the same time as you did, I just picked up my little package from the clinic today, still a little worried about the pain levels, and also that it does actually work as I’ve seen stories of people not bleeding or bleeding really lightly and feeling like it hasn’t worked!

I’m going to take the first pill after work today! Then the following pills early Saturday morning.

I went through this earlier this year at about 7 weeks...
it's fine to take the pills honestly, the earlier on you are the better for less pain.
And depends on how you take the follow up pills whether it be orally or vaginally. I had abortion when much younger and did the oral way back then and I can honestly say the vaginal way (that I experienced this year) was way less painful on the cramps!
I got given codeine that helped but I didn't need to take it every day. I'm going to be honest though, after I'd taken the second dose I felt rough for the next 48hours and didn't leave the house once but once passed the clots (which took about 4 days for me to stop completely bleeding) I was back to my normal self

sashh · 06/07/2023 06:44

Not me but I drove a friend to and from the clinic and then she stayed at mine. She went to bed, said it was like a bad period and practically inhaled the cup of tea I made for her.

boobyandacuddle · 06/07/2023 06:46

I had one at 5 weeks. It was fine. If you'd told me it was a period I'd have believed you. No pain at all, no clots, to the point that I was worried it hadn't worked but it did. Good luck, you'll be fine! Well done for making the right decision for you, weirdly the whole experience made me feel so privileged to live in a country where we have the choice to do it and actually really lucky and it made it seem a positive thing to be doing.

Thank you for your comment, that is reassuring. So I’ve been told to insert the first 4, but then because of bleeding etc to orally take the last 2, I would prefer not to have them orally though.
