Hi,

Just wondering out of interest how much weight people had gained at 20w? I have put on about 12 pounds and just wanted an idea of whether that seemed average or not (was normal BMI before)?

Thanks!

Hi, I've been using this...

www.thebabycorner.com/tools/pregnancy/calculators/weightcalculator.php

... to keep an eye on my weight. I had a BMI of 31 when I got pregnant, so I'm really having to watch my weight, it's reassuring to check I'm on target every week. FWIW, I'm 24 weeks and have put on 9lbs so far but that's not really relevant to you as you have a normal BMI.

AmeliaEarhart · 07/07/2010 17:19

Sounds about right to me. I'm 22 weeks and I've gained 6kg (about 13lbs I think). I was weighed at the hospital this morning and the midwife said my weight was "perfect"! I was also a normal BMI.

emmyloo2 · 07/07/2010 17:33

I am 22 weeks and gained about 5 kilos, maybe 5.5 by now. I had a normal (slightly lowish) BMI to start with.

I have been watching what I eat though and still exercising. I put most on in the first trimester when my boobs blew up and I lost anything resembling a waist.

I think your weight gain sounds completely normal to me.

Giddyup · 07/07/2010 21:42

snap on the BMI AhickeyfromKenickie I am almost 24 weeks and have put on 8lbs so far..... My BMI came as a bit of a shock as I really don't look that fat. Although I do weigh more already than at term with DS!

starshaker · 07/07/2010 21:45

im now 32 weeks pregnant with twins and have put on 10 lbs. Midwife says everybody is different and as long as babies are growing then it doesnt matter. I was overweight before i fell pregnant

AhickeyfromKenickie · 07/07/2010 22:48

Giddyup ahh, well I did look that fat unfortunately! The MW said because I was already a lard arse (well, she didn't use those words, she was very tactful!), I should aim to keep my weight gain to 20lbs. So I've got 16 weeks to go and 11lbs in the bank... God, I want egg and chips

Chynah · 07/07/2010 23:07

Normal BMI and gained about 2-4 lbs (depending on which pregnancy)

You can track your weight with various on line calcultaors/charts if you think you are gaining too quikly.

ki28 · 08/07/2010 11:48

hi, im 20weeks and have put 3pounds on so far but had terrible terrible sickness for a while. This is 3rd preg ans know that as soon as i hit bout 33weeks i tend to pile on bout half stone out of no where.

I would try not to worry has long as your eating healthy and so on. your doing right by baby and you.

vmcd28 · 08/07/2010 12:19

I am going to weigh myself now. Youve shamed me into it. I am 20 weeks, and I think the past 4weeks stuffing my face is taking its toll... Greggs yum-yums are my friend.

vmcd28 · 08/07/2010 12:37

well, I seem to have put on 2kg since 11 weeks, but I dont know if thats ok or not, cos I cant get the above link to work...

lulastic · 08/07/2010 14:11

I am 21 weeks and have put on about 14 pounds! I had a low BMI before (18), was pretty thin, so think I needed to put a fair bit on but still i do feel a bit bad looking at how good you all have been! (I pretty much just ate chocolate for the first 3 months) Am back to a nice diet and exercise routine now so hopefully weight gain won't continue in this vein!!

@ vmcd28 : greggs yumyums, I am totally hearing you! How can they be soooo good!

AhickeyfromKenickie · 08/07/2010 14:26

You will put on a bit more weight if you had a low BMI, because you're laying down maternal fat stores. Luckily I planned ahead and put this weight on several years before I got pregnant so that's one less thing for me to do now
Mine's a glazed doughnut if you're off to Greggs...

DuelingFanjo · 08/07/2010 15:16

I'm almost 18 weeks and have gained about 7 lbs which seems like nothing but I had put on a stone pre-pregnancy and so wonder if I'm just catching up with myself!

Momdeguerre · 08/07/2010 15:36

In my pgs I always gain about 20 lbs by 20 weeks but then don't gain much towards the end. My youngest is 13 weeks and all but a few pounds are gone again. Everyone gains differently. Try not to worry too much.

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 08/07/2010 17:20

4lbs at 22 weeks and most of that went on in the first few weeks and I have stayed the same since. I had a high BMI to start with though. I've done nothing to control it, that's just the way it has gone, I expect to put more on towards the end!

PickleSarnie · 08/07/2010 17:24

I've closed my eyes every time I've stoof on the scales at the midwifes so technically I've not put anything on at all. Result.

PJen · 08/07/2010 17:32

I am 19 weeks and I have put on 4.5 pounds. I don't think I have put on fat on hands and legs but surprisingly it is all in my boobs (two cup sizes bigger) and in belly... I read that the weight that you put on is mainly not fat and during the whole pregnancy you should put 25 lbs due to the below changes of your body:
Maternal stores of nutrient (or as we call it FAT) and muscle development= 7.0 lbs
Increased body fluid= 4.0 lbs
Increased blood= 3.0 - 4.0 lbs
Breast growth= 1.0 - 2.0 lbs (mines are probably now over 2.0 lbs!!)
Enlarged uterus 2.0 lbs
Amniotic fluid 2.0 lbs
Placenta 1.5 lbs
Baby 6.0 - 8.0 lbs

zipzap456 · 08/07/2010 19:00

I am 35 weeks and have put on 6kgs but this is mainly due to have constant morning sickness throughtout my pregnancy.

My BMI was 23 before I got pregnant. I was worried about my weight gain not being enough but have had lots of scans and the baby is growing perfectly :0)

smokeybacon · 08/07/2010 20:39

LOL at picklesarnie. I am liking your style!

Am 20 weeks with twins and stepped on the scales today. Have put on 18lbs. Had a BMI of 23 before pg. I was a little gutted but on checking, this is well within normal range for a twin pg.

smokeybacon · 08/07/2010 20:40

Oh and if anyone is off to Greggs in the morning, mines a bacon sarnie. No sauce. Thanks.

nancydrewrocks · 08/07/2010 20:45

I put on about 4lbs but looked very pregnant.

Interestingly I was living overseas and my consultant was obsessed with the amount of weight I was putting on. In his opinion no more than 16lbs was recommended for the entire pregnancy and he used to laugh about how in the UK "they let you eat and eat and eat" !

Kingsroadie · 08/07/2010 20:55

I had put on about a stone. But didn't look pregnant at all. I had a BMI of 19. I really did not eat that much either. Small bowl of cereal for breakfast, salad or soup or sandwich for lunch and normal dinner with a few snacks in between but ate no more than I did normally and put on 2 3/4 stone in total! Had no idea why I gained so much as I really didn't eat loads - my non-pregnant friends always ate more than me. It seemed that my body basically stopped my metabolism and did what it needed to. The weight cam off v quickly with no effort though so I think your body does what it needs to.

You sound totally fine re weight gain and everyone is slightly different too

DomesticG0ddess · 08/07/2010 22:10

I have put on 16lbs and am 25 weeks, which according to that website is exactly right and I still have a BMI of 22, which is fine. Seems to be a lot more than some people though! I have been exercising throughout, but certainly treat myself to things I wouldn't normally eat. I do see it as a time to be more lenient on the treats front, what with not being able to enjoy wine! I think I look about the same as last time. Kingsroadie I don't think 2 3/4 is that much really, sounds kind of average to me.

Miffster · 08/07/2010 22:18

I don't know how much I have put on but I am eating and eating at 17 weeks.

Today I walked a mile to work on an empty stomach, then had porridge with fruit at 9am, then a bacon sandwich mid morning, then chicken and couscous salad at 1pm, 3 plums at 3pm, cheese and tomato baguette at 5pm and glass of milk and 3 cheese crackers at 9pm, then a bowl of cherries.

I lost 21 pounds before I was pregnant in 5 months and am sure I must have put about 14 pounds back on at least in 4 months.

1st trimester I felt weak and shattered all the time and could only manage nursery food: boiled eggs and marmite toast and stuff like that. Everything I eat is carb-heavy but I am eating more veg and fruit now, and I always made sure I had protein with everything, even when really sick and tired.

My comfort is that I do have a bump and big bouncy boobs so not all of it is fat, I hope.

Maybe it will calm down in a bit as the bump compresses my stomach and I eat less?

planner26 · 08/07/2010 22:57

Hmm...I'm actually down to 10 pounds today (think it was after an excessive chocolate brownie weekend) so am feeling a bit better. My BMI was 21 before so think 10 pounds is ok within average but I'm with you DomesticGoddess - it feels like a lot!

Am swimming though a lot and not eating that much crap (just can't help those bloody brownies - Jamie Oliver has a lot to answer for!).

Had 20w scan today and sonographer 'couldn't really tell' whether it was boy or girl, though 'thought it might be a girl'. Me and DP are really happy all is healthy but were so excited to find out! Damn!
