First midwife appointment, what do they need to know about DH?

Hi,
I am going to my first appointment with the midwife on Wednesday. The appointment end up moving so my husband can't come now. What kind of questions do they ask about the husband at the appointment? I want to come prepared.

Thanks!

Don't think they asked me anything at all (well nothing that you wouldn't know like his address and phone number etc)

ShatnersBassoon · 05/07/2010 10:22

I think they asked me what his ethnicity (or whatever the PC term of the day was) is. Perhaps took his name as well, can't remember.

He was mentioned, but it didn't matter that he wasn't there.

lolabanola · 05/07/2010 10:25

The only questions that they asked me were the ones that were on that were printed on the maternity notes, they inluded:

His name, address, occupation and age.

Whether he smokes

His Ethic origin

Family Health History - ie, anyone in his family with genetic diseases, stillbirths or miscarriages, learning difficulties, heart problems etc.

Also asked whether he is a blood relation!

There were literally only about 10 questions about him and all were easy to answer, there is no need for him to go with you.

babynelly2010 · 05/07/2010 10:27

What about his blood type or medical history? Did they ask anything like that?

Thanks lolabanola!

no, blood type they did not ask and medical history only what lola said.

Hevster · 05/07/2010 10:32

no to blood type and they didn't ask about mine's medical history either.

CuppaPimmsJanice · 05/07/2010 10:35

They'll also ask if he's been violent towards you at all. It's a bit of an alarming question, but apparently quite a lot of domestic violence starts during pregnancy.

The ethnic origin question is because certain abnormalities are more common in certain ethnic groups, so they might want to do extra tests or screening.

DramaInPyjamas · 05/07/2010 10:36

Name, medical history and his employment status.

CuppaPimmsJanice · 05/07/2010 10:37

Oh, and they ask if you're married. And even if you've been together for 13 years and living together for 10, you'll be listed as a 'single mother' on your notes .

lolabanola · 05/07/2010 10:40

Midwife didn't ask me about domestic violence but they did ask me when I went for my first scan, they have to ask everyone that question! Never asked about his blood type either, they are more concerned about the questions relating to you, all they really want to know about him is if there are any family illnesses that may affect your baby. Just checked my pregnancy notes and there is nothing else on there relating to my partner apart from the questions I put above. Good Luck!

MrsJohnDeere · 05/07/2010 10:41

Name.
Any history of domestic violence.
Ethnicity.
Religion.
Relevant family medical history.
Any drug use.

nunnie · 05/07/2010 10:41

Name, age, address, ethnic origin, medical history, she asked them as bullet questions, heart defects etc. Didn't ask his blood type or if he was violent towards me.

Looks like the questions may vary. DH never comes to Midwife appointments just scans and consultant chats.

CuppaPimmsJanice · 05/07/2010 10:41

lolabanola I guess they ask if he's a blood relation because in certain communities there are a fair number of first cousin marriages.

There was a thread about it on here a couple of months ago. People were getting worried because it was happening generation after generation, and abnormalities, stillbirths etc. were increasing.

lolabanola · 05/07/2010 10:42

lol yes cuppa, just noticed that on my notes, she's put single, even though there is a box to tick that says partner!

nunnie · 05/07/2010 10:43

I haven't be asked the domestic violence question yet, still time I suppose (for the question I mean).

nunnie · 05/07/2010 10:44

Oh yes was asked blood relation question sorry missed that one.

StealthPolarBear · 05/07/2010 10:45

at single!
Why do the forms not have another option?

nunnie · 05/07/2010 10:54

There is a partner option why have that if it isn't used.
I filled out my own notes when they came in the post, I am married but if I wasn't and living with father I would have ticked partner.
How very odd

TheBride · 05/07/2010 13:14

If you're Rh-ve blood type they might ask if your partner is also Rh-ve as then you don't have to have the anti-D as you can only have a Rh-ve baby.

However, apparently in the UK, because so many children are not the biological child of DH/DP, they give it to you anyway.

cinnamongreyhound · 05/07/2010 13:41

Name, occupation, phone numbers, does he smoke, if he suffers from any medical conditions, if we were blood relations and I was also asked about domestic violence.

TheBride They wouldn't consider his blood type, although I know he's Rh+, I suppose as you say he may not be the father.

nunnie there's no partner option on my notes, only married, single, seperated or divorced.

nunnie · 05/07/2010 13:43

ohh on mine it is.
Single, married/cp, partner, seperated, divorced, widowed.

Funny how everything varies from area to area.

dublinmom · 05/07/2010 14:30

They don't allow the DP to come into the first appointment here, I guess so you aren't scared to answer questions about number of partners, STD's, domestic violence, etc. Even if the woman doesn't speak English they don't let the DP translate for that first appointment.

Lotta123 · 05/07/2010 16:35

They asked me the following about dh:

name
age (d.o.b. - I gave wrong year - oopsy!)
ethnicity
religion
job
mobile number
his close family's medical history (parents and siblings)
drug use (smoking, alcohol, others)
domestic violence

PickleSarnie · 05/07/2010 18:08

Mine asked if we shared the same grandparents. Which thankfully we dont (since it would have cut down babysitter options and presents at Christmas time!)
