Which month is the most busy for maternity wards?

Hello,

I am just curious to know what is the most busiest month of the year for baby births in the UK. I did a bit research online but did not come to the conclusion. I lived in 2 countries in my life, one is very cold with long winters where many babies come in the winter after the romantic spring 9 months before but in the second country where there are no real winters and climate is very mild the most babies are born in the summer. What is like in the UK? My baby is due at the end of january or very early february and just curious to know...

I have no idea....but I would like to place a bet on April in the UK.

My theory is that heat makes us horny, and therefore babies are born in spring. And aren't most animals born in spring?

September 15th - 25th, at a guess.

I have a child born within those dates .

The deed was done on Boxing Day.

CuppaTeaJanice · 15/06/2010 21:04

I would guess April, May and September.

Lots of hot steamy summer nights, Christmas parties, and people wanting to have september babies so they're the oldest in the year.

PrivetDancer · 15/06/2010 21:06

August / September at a guess, 9 months after Christmas! I always assumed that was why the school year started then

southeastastra · 15/06/2010 21:07

september

StarOfValkyrie · 15/06/2010 21:08

September is supposed to be. Double whammy. All those holiday shags, plus people waiting a bit and then going for it to avoid summer born babies!

helyg · 15/06/2010 21:10

I have 3 DC, born in September, May and February.

In September the ward was heaving and some mums were having to be transferred elsewhere.

In May I was the only person on the whole ward! But I know they did get a lot busier about 2 weeks later.

In February the ward was about half full.

And yes I have a Christmas baby and a hot summer night baby

amidaiwish · 15/06/2010 21:12

mid-end september.
dd2 was due 30th sept. at 6 weeks pg i could not get into a hospital for the birth, scans etc were all really late.

on the day of her birth no birthing rooms available, totally mad!

Lulumaam · 15/06/2010 21:13

september.. xmas and nye babies.

IMoveTheStars · 15/06/2010 21:14

How can you all forget the valentines day babies? November's absolutely heaving

Sidge · 15/06/2010 21:15

September.

My DD3 was born early September (conceived Christmas Day ) and the ward was heaving. It was hell.

DD1 born December, conceived March - ward was empty when I transferred back to local midwife led unit.

DD2 born February but spent 6 weeks in NICU so don't know how busy the general ward was.

Hi Babynelly, I'm due around 25 January. Not sure what it's supposed to be like but i'm hoping quiet lol

Alouiseg · 15/06/2010 21:18

I'm bemused that you actually know the date you conceived

withorwithoutyou · 15/06/2010 21:20

I know in the US it's August, or at least was a few years ago.

bibbitybobbityhat · 15/06/2010 21:21

I know the date I conceived because it was the only time I had sex in my fertile window of opportunity - GO FIGURE!

babynelly2010 · 15/06/2010 21:22

Thank you all for the wonderful feedback! Great responses! I really enjoyed reading
saltnvinigar my baby is due Feb 1 according to some due date calculators but my GP calculated January 30. I also hope for a quite maternity ward and so far it looks like that my due date is not very popular. Yeah!!

DS was born in the first week of Sept and we had to wait in Operating Theatre (he was an emergency CS) for a bed as there were none. MWs said that second week of Sept was their busiest time. We were in for a week. Half way through the week there was a slight lull, during which time a MW said "Well that's all the Christmas babies done, the New Year ones will be in at the week end".

Sidge · 15/06/2010 21:36

I know the date I conceived with DD3 because DH had been away for ages before that Christmas and as we had been trying to conceive for a year I had got slightly obsessed with when I might be able to get pregnant!

Alouiseg · 15/06/2010 21:57

Why the shouting Bibbity?

usualsuspect · 15/06/2010 21:59

September ... NYE

bibbitybobbityhat · 15/06/2010 22:19

For emphasis and I don't like bolding. Unfortunately I don't know how to do an American accent in a type face.

MadameCheese · 15/06/2010 22:37

Oh bum I'm due in september!

Rinnyx · 15/06/2010 22:40

I was told September (thats what I had DD) as its due to all the christmas and new year loving

aendr · 15/06/2010 22:42

I calculated this during my first pregnancy (being a geeky research scientist).

The Office of National Statistics at the time had for download tables of the numbers of births (both live and total fertility rates) for each month for 1996 to 2006. Apart from 2006, the peak for most years (and the mean or arithmetic average of all years) was July, with the lowest February and a fairly low dip in November. I was jolly glad to be having a November child. Of course, I'm now due... August, a relatively busy month.

stressheaderic · 15/06/2010 22:44

Had DD on 20 February. Was the only person to give birth all day, had all 12 delivery rooms to choose from (chose biggest and nearest to loo), they let my parents onto delivery ward as was so quiet, and let DP stay til midnight. Only me and one other girl on post-natal.

Previous week, friend had baby in same hosp and it was heaving, she had to wait in a triage room until just before delivery as it was so chocka. Just the luck of the draw sometimes.
