Which month is the most busy for maternity wards?

Hello,

I am just curious to know what is the most busiest month of the year for baby births in the UK. I did a bit research online but did not come to the conclusion. I lived in 2 countries in my life, one is very cold with long winters where many babies come in the winter after the romantic spring 9 months before but in the second country where there are no real winters and climate is very mild the most babies are born in the summer. What is like in the UK? My baby is due at the end of january or very early february and just curious to know...

Yep September where I work.

We have 9 per day average, but that goes up to 10-12 in that month.

Women can also, miraculously, "cross their legs" and avoid delivering on Weekends and sunny bank holidays.

september

It'll be interesting to see if there is a peak this september - 9 months after we were all snowed in.

MrsGangly · 16/06/2010 10:31

When I was waiting for a scan at a few weeks ago, I read that the Rosie (in Cambridge) had its busiest day last on the 17th of September.

I was due on the 16th of September and had worked out that my parents must have conceived me about Christmas Day. Makes sense...

JazzieJeff · 16/06/2010 10:40

What about October babies this year? All those snow days in January... Well, we had to make use of the time, didn't we?

CuppaTeaJanice · 16/06/2010 10:52

I bet there'll be a lull next March. All the blokes are busy watching football!!

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 16/06/2010 10:53

Sept is the busiest/

Followed by Aug/March in joint 2nd.

DD was born a month early at the end of sept (23rd) and it was very busy. i made the midwives laugh by saying - it wasn't a new years eve fling honestly, i've been married five years and she was conceived end of January!

oldenglishspangles · 16/06/2010 11:14

September - i was told at 7pm you can come down now but the waiting room is full and now one will be available to examine you for at least 2 hours minimum!

notso · 16/06/2010 11:34

When I had DD in May the ward was full.
The weekend DS was due in August the Maternity ward was in the paper as it was so busy it had to shut and sent Mums across the border to England. When DS finally made an appearance a week later I was the only one on the labour ward, and then the only one on post-natal that stayed in.
Hoping it won't be busy this time round, due 23rd December, although secretly I'd love an English born baby.

Rockbird · 16/06/2010 11:43

When I had dd in early Jan there was no one there, think there was me and one other woman for the entire 4 days I was in . I am a September baby as are half my family and friends...

I'm due on september 20th. Does that mean I'll be popping it out in the corridor or in a broom cupboard in the hospital somewhere with the receptionist doing the delivery?!

beanlet · 16/06/2010 12:09

Looks from those stats like the difference between July births and September/October births (the three highest) is negligible. I'm hoping to god mine's early as I don't want to have to fight other nice ladies for the birthing pool at the Rosie!

Pepsiginn · 16/06/2010 12:24

Hmmmm, i'm due 10th of September because my husband wanted our child to be the oldest at school (and we were very lucky). Bit worried about how busy it will be and think maybe next time (if there is one) i will be aiming for a January/February baby!

fruitshootsandheaves · 16/06/2010 12:28

I have 3 born in August
extremely bad planning on my part but the hospital was lovely and quiet especially as DD1 was born on a bank holiday weekend!

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 16/06/2010 13:03

I found the UK stats for 2008 when I was looking for the baby names list, and August was the busiest month.

How fertile do you have to be to have a September baby on purpose??

pixiestix · 16/06/2010 13:05

My first is due on the 24th September and I am really wishing I hadn't opened this thread!

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 16/06/2010 13:10

notso me too! December 23rd! I want mine born in Wales not England though

Iklboo · 16/06/2010 13:12

DS is a November baby

notso · 16/06/2010 14:51

Ooh a due date twin, congratulations Thumbs
I keep trying to introduce a little of my English heritage to my very Welsh family, it took DH 12 months to realise I chose George for DS's middle name after Saint George [evil cackle]

NorkyButNice · 16/06/2010 16:24

DS was late September (NY morning). I gave birth in New York and they said it's always their busiest time at that hospital.

This DC is due July which I'm hoping will be quiet.

suiledonne · 16/06/2010 16:31

I have a May baby and a November baby, born in the same hospital.

When May baby was born things were very relaxed and quiet.

It was totally different the next time round.

I had a very quick (and easy) birth and within minutes I was asked to get up as they needed the delivery bed.

I had to go back to the ante natal ward as no beds in post natal and as there was no pillow on the bed the midwife rolled up my coat and stuck it under my head.

It was chaos.

Bobbalina · 16/06/2010 16:31

Defnitely September ( I have insider knowledge on this one)

SkaterGrrrrl · 16/06/2010 17:21

September (like me, DH and bump on its way).

Blatantly Christmas babies - mum at the sherry and all that...
