Which month is the most busy for maternity wards?

Hello,

I am just curious to know what is the most busiest month of the year for baby births in the UK. I did a bit research online but did not come to the conclusion. I lived in 2 countries in my life, one is very cold with long winters where many babies come in the winter after the romantic spring 9 months before but in the second country where there are no real winters and climate is very mild the most babies are born in the summer. What is like in the UK? My baby is due at the end of january or very early february and just curious to know...

I had DD mid September and was told it was the busiest time because of all the drunken Christmas/new year babies.

Persnickety · 16/06/2010 17:43

When i booked in with DD (March baby) the MW told me that I had a good chance of local hospital because I was just before the rush. She she said May/June was busiest.

happywheezer · 16/06/2010 17:49

Arn't most babies born in the summer/autumn?
This is due to the outside temp being cooler, so men's testicles are cooler, so more lively swimmers? I guess it's a combo of all these things?!

JaMmRocks · 16/06/2010 17:59

Definitely September according to the mws at the local hospital. I had DS2 in september last year (due on 25th, but was 12th in the end) It was manic, and there were lots of twin births too.

SolidGoldBrass · 16/06/2010 18:03

My DS was born in September, too. (As was my mother haha). And yes, DS was definitely a post-Xmas surprise with an old drinking mate. He nearly got called GLen, (short for Glenfiddich).

Psammead · 16/06/2010 18:58

I was born in September. Am shuddering slightly at all the references to 'Christmas loving' on this thread.

Maybee · 16/06/2010 19:00

November to March are the best months for conception due to low temperatures.
ds1 July birthday v busy hospital.
ds 2 Mid January nice and quiet
ds331 August hospital was mayhem!

strandedatsea · 16/06/2010 19:07

Dd1 was sept 11th and yes it was very busy - I was almost ignored from the moment I got onto the ward, despite it being my first baby and having her by cs. Hence breastfeeding did not get off to a good start.

I certainly didn't plan for a Sept baby, it just worked out that way (I kinda fell pregnant first time of trying - thought it would take years!).

Dd2 Dec birth and the ward was still reasonably busy (I figured perhaps Easter baby's?) but not like Sept.

ditavonteesed · 16/06/2010 19:09

september, drunk xmas shags and planned we will try after nye.
March, summer holiday shag
I have one of each.

larakitten · 16/06/2010 19:17

Another vote for September here! When I was in labour with DD there was a QUEUE for labour ward!!!! I was fourth in the queue for a room, but hastily bumped to the head of the queue when the midwives realised my labour was goign very fast indeed......

After she was born, the wards were heaving, the midwives stressed and there were buzzers for help going off all night [groan emoticon]

September (merry Christmas) and then March/April (summer lovin)

BalloonSlayer · 16/06/2010 19:24

Sept 25th is supposed to be the most common birthday in the UK as it indicates a New Year's Eve conception.

Apparently people are too tense at Christmas to have a proper shagfest.

My DS2 was conceived on Boxing Day and due on 19th Sept. I did have him a bit early but still in Sept and the maternity ward was very quiet.

megonthemoon · 16/06/2010 19:47

Oh god, I'm due in Sept. And it is definitely not a Christmas baby so much as a "oh my god we finally managed to move house after months of hell and now we can just relax" baby!

DS was born 31st March and we were kicked out after 2 nights (when I was ill enough after PPH to really need 3) because they had 19 babies (!) born in one night (1st/2nd April) and had nowhere to put them all without kicking out all of the March babies!

Looks like I choose the most popular times to have a baby!

herethereandeverywhere · 16/06/2010 20:11

There are absolutely loads of October babies (mid to end) in my family, far more than any other time of the year. I'm one of them and there are absolutely loads of October birthdays in my work too(v.important information when co-ordinating the cake-buying!)

I figured it was because lots of people make a decision to start a family at the start of the new year.

1TiredBunny · 16/06/2010 20:18

Im very surprised by the dip in November...as mentioned above, surely tons of babies are conceived on Valentines day???

Im pregnant right now with a Valentines baby!

BettyTurnip · 16/06/2010 20:25

I wouldn't fancy a winter baby myself, far too cold to be getting up several times a night for feeds, and being snowed in makes it tricky getting out to show off your new baby to all and sundry .

Bumperlicious · 16/06/2010 20:40

Oh God, this one is due 21st September! Hopefully I will have a homebirth.

My last one was June and I had to give birth on the antenatal ward as they were full! But then this was 3 years ago and that April statutory maternity leave increased to 9 months, probably a lot of people, like us, were holding out for the change.

duchesse · 16/06/2010 20:43

Three of my four were born in July/August. Other one born April.

And an August baby is not conceived at Christmas if you go to 40 weeks, but in November.

malteser1981 · 16/06/2010 21:06

Just to add- think of the poor midwives 9 months from now...........
It's historically always busy 9 months after any major sporting event like the World Cup. Anything to do with drunken men being taken advantage of?

DaisymooSteiner · 16/06/2010 21:09

All of them

Beachbreak · 16/06/2010 21:15

Wow - I never thought about all of this, fascinating! Withoutwithoutyou - I guess the American boom in August is due to Thanksgiving in November then?

Deemented · 16/06/2010 21:41

I had the twins in September, but that was only because they were prem - they weren't due til Christmas.

DD was born in May and it was fairly busy.

DS was born January 12th just gone, and it was absolutely heaving - women being shipped to other hospitals - midwife actually said that in the first ten days of January, 85 babies had been born in the hospital

ronx · 16/06/2010 21:51

Oh dear. I am due on 8 September. Getting scared now. Will I have to give birth in the hospital corridor? [Grin]

AngelsOnHigh · 17/06/2010 01:29

SIL has 4 siblings. Her father is a bank manager. Four of the five siblings were born 9 months after bank holiday
