How long did you bleed for after birth??

I'm only 8 days postnatal and already fed up of what seems like the mother of all periods! Midwife visited today and thought it would be fun to tell me some women bleed for up to 6 weeks . How long did you bleed for? Please tell me you'd packed away your industrial sized pads after a fortnight

Sorry but I was a good month although I did mention it to the doc who gave me antibiotics as I'd acquired an infection. Might be worth speaking to him/her if it continues.

TheArmadillo · 04/06/2010 11:38

6-7 weeks though it did get a lot lighter after the first fortnight or so .

chocolatechomper · 04/06/2010 11:39

I bled for 3 weeks, which I think is quite short. Having said that, it gets lighter and lighter so it will get better.

For info, my first 'proper' period after the baby was born (4 months after DD was born, but I wasn't breast feeding) was really heavy too, so I wouldn't be too quick to throw away the maternity pads. After that they went back to normal though. Good luck.

Rhian82 · 04/06/2010 11:42

Just a couple of weeks I think.

websticks · 04/06/2010 16:57

6 weeks sorry!

ShowOfHands · 04/06/2010 16:58

6 weeks.

SqueezyB · 04/06/2010 17:12

on and off for 10 weeks! Sorry... I mentioned it to my midwife and she said it was normal. It did get lighter though and I switched to normal pads instead of the hideous nappy-sized ones.

Hevster · 04/06/2010 17:14

6 weeks - sorry, it did get lighter though

makeupmummy · 04/06/2010 17:16

ages, least a month, as others have said first period was awful too - got quite a start! And wished someone had warned me! Sorry!

thislittlesisterlola · 04/06/2010 17:27

a month to six weeks- oh my! I am glad I've read this now- before I give birth, as I would not of expected that at all.
Oh boo I hate periods

MinnieMummy · 04/06/2010 17:27

Six weeks with first two, am currently 17 days post-partum and it's showing no signs of slowing down at all, midwife today seemed to think this was an issue and so I'm now on antibiotics for an infection. Perhaps worth checking if it's still v heavy in another week?

ShowOfHands · 04/06/2010 17:40

Bear in mind that where the placenta was attached is a wound the size of a dinner plate. It takes a while for that to heal.

Shaz10 · 04/06/2010 17:41

6 weeks. It did get lighter though and I was on normal period pads fairly quickly.

I was one of the lucky ones then roughly 2 weeks or so all 3 times.

It eases off quite quickly too, although if I strain myself/do too much it becomes heavier again.

notnowbernard · 04/06/2010 17:42

About 8-9w with DC1

About 6 with DC2 (got lighter much quicker though)

Marne · 04/06/2010 17:51

About 5 weeks with dd1.
2 weeks with dd2.

PinkElephant73 · 04/06/2010 18:27

At least 7 weeks with DS1, less with DS2. After the first few weeks I was able to use normal sanitary towels not maternity pads.
I used disposable pants for the first few days, but they are not very comfy.

Flowerface · 04/06/2010 18:29

Five weeks, but at the end it was just like a light period... DD was a right screamer, so I was too preoccupied to really notice or care!

CluckyKate · 04/06/2010 18:41

6 weeks for me too. I was able to switch to normal pads after a week but the dry-weave top-sheet kept catching on my stiches (ouch)!

seashore · 04/06/2010 18:55

I found the period really shocking especially as we live very far from the hospital and a few times it seemed like I was in trouble, it was too red and coming too fast but in the end I was ok.

Anyway, 1st birth (ventouse) at least 6 weeks and very heavy.

2nd birth, completely natural, unplanned homebirth, it was much lighter and over within a month.

del1 · 05/06/2010 14:24

I've just stocked up on massive pads. I didn't loose much blood giving birth.
But my god, did I bleed after - 6 flipping weeks of it !!
My mate ws with me just i boots, and think i've worried her !!

3 weeks with ds2 not sure with ds1, i think a bit longer. not 6 weeks though. and it does, as other say, get lighter.

tbh the 1st few weeks went so fast for me it really didn't seem that long.

CrankyTwanky · 05/06/2010 14:32

The more children you have the heavier the lochia, apparently.

With dc3 I bled for 8 weeks passing clots of 35-50ml. Then I had a period despite EBFing!
