Tummy button piercing-stretch marks anyone???????

Funny question, though I never heard it mentioned before.
I'm a little paranoid, as when I was pg with ds I took out my tummy bar, and throughout the pg I noticed some small stretch marks appearing around the actual piercing hole. It looks a bit weird to say the least!
Now I'm pg again, I'm scared it'll get ten times worse! I know, I know...they're my war wounds of motherhood, and there's nothing I can do about it...but...
Do stretch marks tend to be worse 2nd time round?
I just want to be prepared!(lots of cream, lots of cream!)

I've got a very nasty stretchmark from a belly button piercing, it's a good two inches long and almost an inch wide.
Most of it happened first time round though, I think it might have got slightly longer in subsequent pregnacies but not much.

I did get more other stretchmarks with each pregnancy though.

morningpaper · 02/08/2005 14:40

I'm 32 weeks with pg no. 2.

Last time I got two small (2inch?) stretchmarks across the top of my bellybutton scar tissue. This time (so far) I have two similar marks criss-crossing these. Nothing else so far. So not too drastic and useful for playing noughts and crosses.

baggybear · 02/08/2005 19:05

I've got a friend who also got just 1 stretchmark around ther piercing during her first pregnancy. She worried it would get worse with her second, but as it happened, it didn't and she still only has the 1 stretchmark (Cow! My tummy looks like a relief map of the Himilayas!!! )

Rachey1969 · 02/08/2005 20:41

Did anyone use a 'pregnancy retainer'? I bought one but the puppy ate it... (long story). Don't bellybuttons close up quickly?

Rachey1969 · 02/08/2005 20:42

I had it pierced in the first place to hide a stretch mark from ds2 who gave me an umbilical hernia!

spursmum · 02/08/2005 20:44

I took out my bellybar when I was pg but found that the hole was still there afterwards!! Glad coz I had only had it pierced 2 weeks before i found out that I was pg!!!
Just to make you all , got no stretch marks, back in normal clothes day of birth and back to my original weight!!! HA!

diane77 · 02/08/2005 22:06

I can really only hope and pray that a lot of cocoa butter and bio-oil help then!
Ah well, whatever will be, will be......

bio-oil is the best

RachD · 03/08/2005 21:38

I replaced my silver ring with plastic bar. Regret taking that out, near the end. Closed up within a week ! Used bio-oil. Best thing ever. Not a sigle stretchmark anywhere !!
But I think stretchmarks just depend on the person. My friend used bio-oil and hers are very, very bad. How do you explain that ? Less stretchy skin ????

subcision(needling) often helps on depressed and pitted scars

The needles injure the upper 1-2 mm of the dermis. This injury, minute as it might seem, does cause localized damage and bleeding. This will promote the normal post-traumatic infiltration of fibroblasts and the release of growth factors.
Ultimately, collagen is laid down in the papillary and upper reticular dermis.
This results in confluent collagen production stimulation and deposition, and as a result, may mimic the results obtained with laser, dermabrasion or deep chemical peels, but without destroying the epidermis.
Skin Needling also perforates and softens fibrous scar tissue, enabling the deposition of new collagen
The new collagen fills depressed scars from the bottom up, lifting the scars so that they are level with the surrounding skin. In some cases it is possible to repigment hypo-pigmented scars.

Subcision is a process created for atrophic scars, using fat and other substances to fill up the depression under the scar so that it becomes level. Subcision can also involve the separation of skin tissue from the scar tissue to allow blood to pool, eventually forming connective tissue and raising the scar up. Both these processes are always done by licensed professionals, and the patient may be under either local or general anesthesia, on an outpatient basis.

I am using a retainer for this pregnancy am 29 weeks now. Last preg i took my peircing out and needed it re-peirced. This time i will try and keep retainer in as if i do take it out i will not get it re-peirced again as am now 32.

widgetsmummy · 17/10/2007 11:43

Am 23 weeks, have removed piercing and am wishing I hadn't read this thread! must be better at applying cream!

loobyt · 17/10/2007 13:20

I'm 23 weeks pregnant and have just bought a plastic pregnancy piercing retainer thing as I really didn't want the piercing to close up. So far so good and not stretch marks. Have been using bio-oil.

berrybliss · 17/10/2007 20:17

No stretch marks but felt like my peircing was going to rip because my bump is so firm. I'm 35 weeks so i better not get any bigger!

sparklygothkat · 17/10/2007 20:24

I have 2 belly piercings, one at the top and one at bottom. I used a retainer in both piercings, with my last pregnancy. I only had the bottom one done last year, so only had the 1 piercing through my other 3 pregnancies. Have no stetchmarks and my piercings made it through without stretching

Eaglebird · 17/10/2007 23:06

No stretch marks to report yet (currently 39+2). Not sure if it's due to good luck or Clarins body tonic oil.
However my piercing has expanded widthways a bit. It looks a bit like a winking eye. I've had it pierced several years so haven't needed to use a retainer as it hasn't closed up. It's been quite itchy this week though, but suspect that's just due to skin on tummy stretching. Tummy feels as tight as a drum, as if it's going to pop any minute.

Denny185 · 18/10/2007 19:12

On my third pregnancy, no stretch marks around piercing although the top hole has stretched somewhat and whilst pregnant i have to wear the bar upside down otherwise the small ball sinks in the top hole. Nice!!

NinjaR · 21/10/2007 11:36

I'm 18 weeks pregnant and wondering if I should remove my bar.. I saw on some website that "maternity belly bars" exist. Does that mean that if I get one, I can keep it in throughout my pregnancy? I've had my piercing for several years, and don't want it to close up!

I have also bought Bio Oil, however, haven't started using it yet...

sleepyhead1986 · 25/10/2007 18:19

is it normal through pregnancy to start off with stretchmarks appearring at the side of your belly button. its my first time pregnant and im quite interested.

Browndivegirl · 31/10/2007 09:50

I'm confused - why do I have to remove my metal belly bar and replace it with a plastic one? And where do I get those from? Am a first time mum-to-be at 12 wks.

goingfor3 · 31/10/2007 09:54

My stretchmarks started with some very small fine ones above my pubic bones alomost over night they mulityplied and covered my whole belly! There were so many the belly button piercing marks seemed insignificant.

doggiesayswoof · 31/10/2007 10:00

No stretchmarks round the piercing from 1st pregnancy (but ask me again in 6 months). However it has stretched sideways like Eaglebird's and tbh looks pretty unattractive. It has closed up but still looks open IYSWIM.

Browndivegirl, you need a plastic one because it has to be able to stretch. You'll be able to pick one up from anywhere you can get piercing done. having said that, you don't need to do anything until your bump starts growing - my normal bar lasted fine until about 20 weeks last time.

browndivegirl · 31/10/2007 13:52

Thanks doggiesayswoof (great nickname btw!) By belly bar has a bit of space for me to grow at the moment, but will look a plastic one out.
