I have a an appointment with my midwife in 2 weeks when i will be 39 + 4 days with my second baby and she said i will get an internal and a sweep if i want it.

I just wondered if anyone had a sweep with their second baby and was it effective?

Thanks x

had sweeps with 2nd, 3rd & 4th - none of them worked! I think it will only work if your body is on it's way to going into labour IYSWIM.

I would wait until you're past 40 weeks tbh.

nowwearefour · 06/05/2010 20:36

Hi yes it was a sweep that put me into labour at 41+4 days. At 39 weeks i'd say you were lucky to be getting one but it might just work so go for it and book another if it isnt successful!

JodieO · 06/05/2010 20:37

I did and it worked. I was 38 weeks, started getting mild contractions right away and went into proper labour the following morning. Had ds1 a couple of hours later.

roxanne08 · 06/05/2010 20:38

i had a sweep at 42 weeks with 2nd, was born 12 hours later.

NoahAndTheWhale · 06/05/2010 20:40

I had one at 40+3 with my 2nd - DD was born within 24 hours.

coppertop · 06/05/2010 20:40

I had a sweep with my 1st, 2nd and 3rd and none of them worked.

Yes - gave birth next day. Also, had to re-read your post as I thought you meant an office sweep where they all bet on weight of baby and chuck a £ in the kitty. In which case yes to that too!!!

MrsCraig87 · 06/05/2010 20:43

Thanks for all your you'll help and advice. I'm really unsure to get it or not

I had one at 39 + 4, 4 weeks ago with Ds2 and was already 4cms. He was born later that night after quick labour. I hadn't had any pain so had no idea things were happening and only asked for the sweep as I was fed up. If you can have one then maybe go for it as it may be a success. Good luck!

notnowdave · 06/05/2010 20:44

Yes

DD2 born about 45hrs later

Did the sweep work? Who knows!

Good luck

plusonemore · 06/05/2010 20:52

I had one only with second DS at 40 exactly. Was induced a week later.

Was going to say 'you might as well, it can't hurt' except it can (a bit)

Good luck, I would say just try to relax and let baby come when ready. I got so impatient at the end of both mine but I would LOVE that pregnant feeling now, wish I had appreciated it more

wonderif · 06/05/2010 20:58

yeh i had sweep first and 2nd time, after second one went straight into labour !!!

thick and fast they came !!!

3rd one on way fingers crossed i wont need it

hazeyjane · 06/05/2010 21:09

I had 3 sweeps with dd2, and she was 14 days ovedue - arrived 3 days after last sweep, so no didn't work for me. The second one bloody hurt though, and when I asked the MW why that one had hurt so much, she said it was because that would be the one that worked

LuluF · 06/05/2010 21:54

I was 9 days over with 2nd baby. I had a sweep and nothing happened immediately, then in the early ours of the next morning, sure enough baby arrived, after an hour and a half labour, don't think that was anything to do with the sweep though.

msjayjay · 13/05/2010 13:55

Just been told if still pregnant at 39 weeks i will be having a sweep as they dont want me to go past 40 weeks was a bit of a shock and wierd as I had only read this the other day but now I know what to expect.

StealthPolarBear · 13/05/2010 13:58

yes, and it hurt so much i needed G&A
that was at 8ish, i was 2cm dilated, i went home but was back an hour or so later & dd was born at 11.30

madcatsazz · 13/05/2010 17:05

msjayjay - why don't they want you to go past 40 weeks if you don't mind my asking?

newmomma · 13/05/2010 17:06

Yes - just had one about 4 hours ago...

I'll let you know if anything happens, but not holding out much hope as not even due until Monday!

madcatsazz · 13/05/2010 17:36

newmomma - I had one about 11.30 and I'm not holding out much hope either. We keep running into each other on these threads, don't we? It's kinda nice seeing others going through the same things.

msjayjay · 13/05/2010 18:21

Hi Madcatz

Previous history and high blood pressure, well thats what I could work out saw quite a few people today and still got it all going on in my head. I am high risk pregnancy and high chance that it will end up a cesarian so I just think they are trying to control things to initially go for a natural birth.

Trafficcone · 13/05/2010 18:30

Yes. I had sweeps with all my kids but it was only Dd, who was #2 that it worked. I had the sweep at 40weeks exactly. It was dne at 11am, I had instant backache and by mid afternoon I was contracting. By 7:30 I was sure I was going to go into labour and at 8:15 my waters went and I went into full blown labour. She was born 1.5 hrs later.

madcatsazz · 13/05/2010 19:24

sorry for being nosey msjayjay - I was asking only because I hate to see you pushed into early labour but it would seem you have lots of reasons for it.

msjayjay · 13/05/2010 19:42

NP Madcatz

It seemed like it came out of the blue from the consultant but I am getting my head around it now.

Good Luck to all all who have had sweeps today.

I am not going to think about mine yet its 8 weeks away so anything can still happen.

Just a bit annoyed that my notes say I want to try for VBAC when all I said was I will do whatever is thought best.

ja9 · 13/05/2010 19:50

I had sweep with my 2nd. first was almost 2 weeks early, so with second i was demented by the time i reached my due date. Was due on the Sat, had sweep on the Mon and baby born early Wed morning.
