8 weeks, bright red blood, no pain - surely it can't end well?

Hello

I am 8+2 weeks pregnant after a mm in Dec 2008 and 14 months of ttc since..

I have had sticky brown discharge on and off since 5 weeks, but have had 3 scans so far and all fine - heartbeat seen each time.

Then, from nowhere last night as I left work, I had a gush of bright red blood with 1 signigicant clot. There has been no pain and it stopped when I got home. I haven't bled over night either but there was a red streak when I wiped this morning..

I can't believe that I saw a heartbeat on Tuesday and this has happened 2 days later?

Can anymore offer any positive experiences and stop me going out of my mind?

Surely it can't be good?

I think there's every chance it will be fine. Almost exactly the same thing happened to me at 9 weeks (and again at fourteen weeks). Plus, I had lots of the sticky brown stuff too.

I found that the bleeds were very fast, and both accompanied by a sizable clot (the one at 14 weeks was so big it looked like a kidney, or something).

Obviously I don't wish to keep your hopes up if it is bad news. But I thought I had lost my daughter twice, yet the pregnancy progressed from the second bleed textbook style...

I would call your doctor and go and get checked. They should do you another scan right away, based on this, they did for me.

Also, if your blood group is rheasus negative, you may need additional attention. Not hugely likely, but just thought I'd mention it.

addictedisinthesecondtrimester · 23/04/2010 09:29

there is every chance it might be fine - at 8 weeks i went for a re-assurance scan everything was fine, then that night i started bleading, i've since had 2 scan which show a healthy baby and i'm 12 weeks preg.

however you do need another scan, just to see whats going on. it may not be good news or there may be another problem they can sort. or everything may be fine. phone your doc today and if they cant fit you in today they will after the weekend.

I had bright red bleeding with both dds.Mine were around 8 wks and 14wks.Apparently it is very common and more women bleed during pg than don't.My mum bled so much that she didn't know she was pregnant until she was 5 months.

I'd get a chck up,for peace of mind, but it could be cervical erosion, position of the placenta, any number of things.

I hope eveyrthing goes well for you-I can still remember that awful feeling when you see blood.

VeronicaCake · 23/04/2010 09:39

I had a bleed almost exactly like the one you describe at 10 weeks. I'm now nearly 38 weeks pregnant and have had no further bleeding. Again don't want to give false hope, but the sonographer who scanned me at the EPAU said she saw lots of women who had sudden unexplained bleeds which they couldn't account for (they looked carefully at that scan and at my 12 week scan and found nothing) but which didn't seem to affect the baby.

Obviously you need another scan and to rest in the meantime, but don't despair yet.

Thank you so, so much for your responses. I have a scan booked for 11.50 today. The bleeding has stopped as far as I can tell... So who knows?

You have all given me that little bit of hope I needed.

God bless Mumsnet....!

101damnations · 23/04/2010 13:19

Just checking in to see how you are.I'm glad you got a scan today.I'm crossing everything for you.

moonstorm · 23/04/2010 13:51

Hope you are ok and that the scan went well. xx

MoChan · 23/04/2010 13:53

Glad you got a scan so quickly, hope all's well.

Amarilis · 23/04/2010 15:54

Just got back from scan - heart beat still there and it's grow 6.1mm in 3 days - so it seems OK... However, EPAC nurse said that it is still termed a 'threatened miscarriage' and to go home and rest - they even signed me off for a week?

Have any of you been told your bleeds were a 'threatened miscarriage'? and then been fine?

I thought resting couldn't prevent anything?

I don't think I can deal with the stress of the next 4 weeks until 12 week scan

Aghhhhhhhhhhh.

That's good news Amarilis.

Yes, I think they term all bleeding a "threatened mc", I had this at 6 wks last pg (was also told to "rest" for a few days, not sure what that was supposed to achieve tbh!) and DS is now a healthy 3yo.

Good luck.

Amarilis · 23/04/2010 16:02

Wow... I guess you never can tell.

Hi, I had the same experience. Brown blood at 4 & 6 weeks Had scan and everything fine.
At 8 weeks had bright red blood over a period of a few days.
Had a further scan, this showed a clot that was dispersing but also showed good heart beat.
Pregnancy continued ok with sporadic bleeding on and off. Had ds at 38 weeks.
Hope everything goes well for you x

CherryPie3 · 23/04/2010 16:09

Hi, I had bleeding at 6 weeks, had a scan which showed heartbeat.

Was still bleeding but am now 26+1 pregnant

addictedisinthesecondtrimester · 23/04/2010 17:00

so glad there is still a heartbeat. i was put on bedrest for a couple of weeks, it was a pain in the arse as i had lots i needed to do, but imo worth doing even if it is such a small % of pregnancys that are helped because of resting.

MoChan · 23/04/2010 17:01

I think they do call it a "threatened miscarriage" just because it's bleeding. I didn't get signed off when it happened to me, though. They may have told me to take it easy.

I know you will worry through the next few weeks, but try not to - as a PP has said, this is actually very common.

Really pleased to hear that it was good news

weloveyoumisshannigan · 23/04/2010 17:15

I had a 'threatened miscarriage' with ds1. I bled lightly up to about 16 weeks on about 5 occasions lasting 2-3 days each time.

A friend of mine had a huge bleed at about 10 weeks. She was standing up at work and blood gushed down her legs and pooled on the floor. Everything was fine.

weloveyoumisshannigan · 23/04/2010 17:34

btw my friends bleed was caused by the placenta growing through a vein I think. She said it was 'normal'.

101damnations · 23/04/2010 20:19

Great news! I'm so pleased for you.

My two 'threatened miscarriages' are currently thundering about upstairs and should be asleep by now.I think any bleed that can't be put down to a definite cause is called a threatened miscarriage.

I don't know if the same thing will happen to you as it did to me,but I was refused a 12wk scan because I'd had one at 6wks [prevs ectopic] and one at 8wks for bleeding. This happened with both my pregnancies.Hopefully this has now changed.

whomovedmychocolate · 23/04/2010 20:23

Another one with the same experience. He's nearly 2 now!

I was also told that the bed rest thing made no bloody difference and that it was just one of those things!

Good luck to you, hopefully this will be the most eventful bit of your pregnancy before the birth.

Pronoia · 23/04/2010 20:27

Same thing happened to me in both pregnancies, and they are now 4 and 7. It was blood from my cervix.

I hope you hang onto your baby.
