currently in hospiital as my waters broke at just under 15 weeks last night. it is a twin pregnancy and so far one twin seems ok, but the other twin has no anmiotic fluid and little movement but does have a heartbeat.

if anyone has any experience of this, good or bad, please post. i don't think the pprgnosis is good sadly.

midori1999 · 23/03/2010 20:55

Thankyou so mucheveryone.

I saw a registrar again today as my consultant is now away for three weeks.

The scan showed no fluid around twin 1 again, except for one very small pocket, but it was by the baby's face, which I guess is the best place for it to be. However, I was kept waiting for 1 1/2 hours for my appointment, and during that time I could feel a lot of fluid draining out of me and even had to go and change my pad, so I suspect had they scanned me when I first arrived, there would have been more fluid there. Not much movement from twin 1, but a couple of big wriggles. Twin 2 still has normal fluid and is making up for his/her brother or sister's lack of movement, a right little mover!

My new problem, for the time being at least, is that I asked when I would be given steroids and was told 24 weeks and not at all before, and so I asked what would happen if the babies were born just before 24 weeks and was told they would not consider resuscitating the babies prior to 24 weeks at all. So, if born at 23 + 6, they wouldn't resuscititate. However, I did argue and the doctor basically said there had to be some sort of cut off point. I said I had known of babies, even twins, that have been born just before 24 weeks and survived and that I was aware of the potential problems and statistics and wasn't saying I wanted the babies kept alive at any cost, just that if they were born in good condition that it be considered they be resuscitated. She said I would be best to discuss with my consultant when he is back, but in the meantime she would try and arrange for me to meet a paediatrician to discuss. I'm not sure what else I can do at this point, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate them.

The other thing is, my booked hospital don't care for babies under 28 weeks, so at 24 weeks I will be admitted to the hospital that do, and then if I get to 28 weeks, I'll be tranferred back and kept in until I deliver. A palava, but never mind.

So pleased that the babies are still wriggling!

Just watching OBEM, twins born at 23+4? I think, one sadly passed away but the other is fighting.

girlsyearapart · 24/03/2010 07:19

Still hanging on in there midori

Know what you mean about the transfer- my sister went into labour at 28 weeks and there were no neo natal beds so she was transferred from London- Brighton where they held off the labour and eventually she had DN at 31 weeks at our local hospital.

TheHappyCamper · 24/03/2010 07:43

Another lurker here. I have been following your thread and have everything crossed for you and your babies.

I also saw OBEM last night, and thought of you as well. Geordieminx is right. The twins were born at 23 weeks. One sadly didn't make it but the episode followed twin 2 right up to when she leaves hospital. It was very moving and truly amazing what they can do. Here is a link

This must give you hope xx

midori1999 · 24/03/2010 08:12

Thankyou. I saw OBEM last night, but to be honest, it makes me feel even sadder, as it confimed what I already knew, that babies can survive if born at 23 weeks.

At the moment, that is irrelevant, the hospital will not kep my babies alive if they ar eborn befor 24 weeks and I was told yesterday that there wouldn't even be a doctor there at delivery if I went into labour prior to 24 weeks, and certainly having 'spoken' (online) to a lady who very sadly lost her daughter who was born at 23+6 at the same hospital, I know this is usually the case. However, I do have the advantage of knowing in advance my babies may be early, so I intend to do everthing I can for them.

It would be bad enough losing them at any gestation, but because the were born a day or two early and knowng a different hospital would try to keep them alive would almost kill me, I think.

Hi Midori
I am pleased to hear they are still wriggling. That has to be a good sign.
I am sure your hospital is a really good one and that everything will be fine. However, you are obviously really worried about the prospect of the twins being born prior to 24 weeks. Where do you live? Is there another hospital you could get transferred to? It might be worth badgering your GP to see if you could get transferred to a different one. Or - if you feel it might help - you could try writing to your MP. They can sometimes have great influence and, at the risk of sounding cynical, we are coming up to an election so they should be paying attention to what people want.
I am rooting for all 3 of you.

missedith01 · 24/03/2010 09:10

Hi Midori1999,

I was thinking of you in OBEM too, if this is a general policy I wonder if Izzie was breathing when born and was incubated w/o being resusitated? If not, it seems like at least some hospitals have more flexible policies.

When I read your post this morning (glad you and the babies are still hanging in there) I also wondered if it might be worth contacting BLISS to see if they can offer any help or advice?

Best wishes and take care.

designerjooles · 24/03/2010 09:43

Yeah - it doesn't seem to make sense. Is it just because different hospitals have different policys when it comes to assistance after birth?
I think it's worth doing what KFW said and talk to your GP re this.. see if you have another facility in the area that are willing to support you a little more if the worst comes to the worst.
Glad to hear the twins and you are still hanging in there.
Your amazing to be so strong going through what you and the kids are going through.

midori1999 · 24/03/2010 11:15

Thanks. I am currently in Northern Ireland and will already have my care transferred to the only hospital that should care for babies under 28 weeks when I get to 24 weeks. Then, if I get to 28 weeks, I will be transferred back. Apparently, current policy in NI is that babies under 24 weeks will nt be resuscitated. (from what I can gather, 'resusctitated' is the term they use to refer to keeping babies alive at birth, even if they are breathing by themselves, and in fact, most babies born around 23 weeks will be breathing and alive at birth).

It is very frustrating and upsetting as my local hospital in England would have been the one shown on OBEM last night, and obviously in my condition I can't just travel back to England, otherwise I would.

The registrar I saw yesterday has agreed to get a paediatrician to speak to me, so I am still hoping I can get them to be more flexible. I have considered contacting Bliss, and am trying to find out as much as I can prior to speaking to the paediatrician so that I am 'well armed'. I will do absolutely everything I can, although obviously hopefully in the end I'll go well past 24 weeks, so it won't be an issue.

midori everything is crossed for you,
definitely be armed with as much information as possible

There is also a charity based in NI called Tiny Life might be worth giving them a call too
