nuchal scan - what do you think?

Just had mine. Risk for maternal age 167. Adjusted risk 411. Which sounds low to me but I think it is just because the numbers fall off a cliff when you are over 35. I remember my first one at 28 put me at 1:1800...! Ah, my lost youth. Anyway, nasal bone is also looking fine. I think I'm happy with that but they kept asking if I wanted bloods as well - which they say gives a more accurate result but more false positives. Any thoughts?

not really, I was 28 (but dh was 35 - he is now an old codger of 42)

so it looks like I now have the risk of a 31 yr old. I think that is a pretty good improvement in risk, and with the nasal bone stuff ...

I was 3.5 yrs qualified and felt like a break! then had ds when I was 6yrs qualified, had my partnership interviews while on maternity leave (NOT fun trying to get my brain in gear and look like I gave a shit for that one!!!)oh happy days

I'm 37 and had my nucual scan in February - baby due in September.

The background risk was 1:127
Adjusted to - 1:4609 nasal bone seen - also had the blood tests - all seemed to point to low chance.But damned difficult to work out!

Haven't had a nuchal, and think I have decided against bloods too - not sure if I'm being foolhardy or not.

I will have you know that I'm the worlds longest gestator so I don't fancy my chances much.

I know what you mean about the nuchal, but I also REALLY wanted to know that there was just one in there (recurrent paranoia of mine) so it served a dual purpose really.
My babies all have such big hooters that I can't get too worried about the rest of the nuchal stuff!!!

It says - adjusted risk or trisomy 21 1:2521
and adjusted risk of trisomy 13+18 1:4609 - but I did have full blood tests too. It's all double dutch - which was interesting as the doctor was dutch!

I think seeing the nasal bone is a good indicator.

pph, your risk is v similar to mine - also nose bone. Remember that your risk at birth is half that of your risk at time of scan as half of babies with downs spontaneously miscarry. So really it is one in 800andsomething.
I did some research and only around 25% of babies with Downs have a nose bone at this stage and more than 80% of babies with Downs have a nuchal fold of more than - I think - 3mm. With that information I decided that I wouldn't have any more tests at all. I also discovered at this stage that dd was, in fact, a dd and was so overwhelmed by her realness (yes, I know, not a word) that I couldn't bear the thought of risking her life with a CVS, which I always thought I would have owing to my frighteningly advanced age.
I cannot believe you are having your fourth at an age when I hadn't even conceived my first. Amazing! You could have another three.
In your position, which is roughly where I was, no I wouldn't have more tests, but of course it has to be your decision alone. I think it sounds really good. The nuchal fold must have been really slender to have reduced your age related risk so far.
Does this one also look like Barry Manilow? Do you know if you are having dd2 or ds3 yet?

I didn't think it was possible to have such good results at that age! Oooooh now I do feel inadequate. Never mind, I'm sure little concorde-nose will be fine!

PPH, DS was 10 days late, so I figured we might have a good race

Not had the nuchal because it wasn't offered - wasn't a studied choice not to. Did have a scan last week though.

BTW I was also so incredibly relieved not to have twins. Nothing wrong with twins of course, but I would be the witch from hell, I know it.

hello aloha! thank you for that. the nuchal fold was 2.1 which I think is pretty good really. we had a good squint at the nether regions but decided it could go either way really. will probably find out at the 20wk scan. If I'm going to be the mother of 3 boys (and therefore spend my life huddled sadly on the edge of games pitches) I think I need to be prepared for that!!

redhelen, 13 and 18 are patau's and edwards. that's a pretty good result!
