I am currently 41 weeks today. Had my MW round for a sweep but she couldnt do it as my cervix was too high / unfavourable.
This is my third DS (first one induced, second came naturally at 8 days over, the day before i was due to have a sweep)
What are the chances of me still going into natural labour????
Feeling like all my choices for a natural birth are being taken away
TIA

You still have a week to go it could all happen don't despair!

helsi · 06/07/2005 19:49

I was going to say that it is usual to go up to 42 weeks. hang on in there and all the best!!

Tessiebear · 06/07/2005 19:51

thanks guys - i just have this feeling that it isnt going to happen on its own!!!!!

You have as much chance as you want really (no one can force you to get induced)... You do have a whole week ahead. Your cervix will get "in gear" faster this time around so whilst it clearly wasn't ready it may be in 3 days.... don't panic.
Are things ready?

Should you get induced they might just break your waters and you can still have a natural birth... you might not need more... relax, HAVE SEX!

Tessiebear · 06/07/2005 20:50

Yes, but being induced will mean Hospital instead of the birthing unit, NO waterbirth lots more monitoring and may have to encorporate a drip (which means facing my fear of needles) Oh, and NOT any of MY midwives (they dont come to the hospital with you)
Sorry to moan - it is just that last time i felt so in control - had a waterbirth with just gas and air in the birthing unit - i just dont fell like my body is READY to go into labour anytime soon.

The sex worked for me - ds arrived Sat, induction was booked for the Mon

Tessiebear · 06/07/2005 21:12

How many times a day did you do it ?? (if you dont mind me asking ) We were planning on once a day!!

Tessie -sex and then in 3 or 4 days aim for a sweep...
You will get there.
I can't see you having a drip !
You can have a water birth with an ARM (and sometimes with the gel too!).

mears · 06/07/2005 22:26

Tessiebear - your chances of going into labour are HIGH, believe me. There is absolutely no reason why you should not go into labour yourself. Is your date your own or a scan date BTW? Go for the latest one whichever it is

I personally am not a fan of the 'craze' of sweep offering going on ATM. If your midwife hadn't done it, you would not know where your cervis was and you would not be worried as you are now.

I have seen women with unfavourable cervix deliver the next day. It means nothing. Lots of things can happen in the next few days. Try and chill out and have faith in your body and nature. This baby will come when it is ready.
Agree with pupuce about the sex (if you can be bothered).

Remember, even if you get to 42 weeks, there is no need to be induced if all is well. IME, most women go into lbour between 41+3 and 42 weeks. Have mental words with your baby every day and encourage it to come soon. Book a hair appointment and it is sure to come

Heathcliffscathy · 06/07/2005 22:37

mears you are fabulous....

Heathcliffscathy · 06/07/2005 22:38

really think that the talking to your baby does amazing things btw....in both my (hippy dippy) and sisters' (stuff and nonsense, lets get to hospital) experience...

mears · 06/07/2005 22:47

Thanks sophable

Tessiebear · 07/07/2005 09:05

Thanks Mears - fab advice - has made me feel a lot better

Especially about booking the hair cut

The date is MY date btw - it was LATER than the scan date. As i knew mine was acurate i wanted to use that to give me more chance of natural labour (as i have a tendency for lateness)

Thanks Pupuce as well

That's all right
I (always) agree with Mears but if she says you can pop quickly then YOU CAN

yoyo · 07/07/2005 09:28

Book a reflexology appointment. Reflexologist told me that 90% of overdue women never make the appointment as they spontaneously go into labour. I booked mine on Monday for next day and DS was born at 4am!

triplets · 07/07/2005 22:20

How was the cake? You know what I mean!

Tessiebear · 08/07/2005 09:10

it was lovely thanks Triplets
I managed to eat about 3 slices last night - purely for research you understand as my cakes normally NEVER rise

triplets · 09/07/2005 23:03

Hi Tessiebear,
Thinking of you, feeling sad today for Matthew, thought of him alot tonight as we have just got back from an organized walk on Hawkshill Common, bat spotting! Thomas is so like Matthew for things like that, he was asked to carry one of the sonar dtector boxes, he was so excited, we eventually saw about 12 bats. Got in at 10.30pm and packed them off straight to bed as as you know its up and out early for swimming. So, hope you are ok, maybe there will be news at the pool? I`ll pop round to see you perhaps on Mon?
