Hi I am nearly 8wks and I am craving CocaCola so badly!
I don't normally like it when not pg but i keep wanting it. I had some earlier today and it tasted heavenly.
Is it really bad for the baby and will i need to stamp on this craving now - btw i have really bad nausea and it helped a lot!

Snorting coke would be bad. Drinking Coke would be fine.

starshaker · 28/12/2009 21:47

I have a huge craving for irn bru and have gave into it. My baby will come out the colour of an oompa loompa lol

MarineIguana · 28/12/2009 21:49

Don't see what's wrong with it - only the caffeine, but you can have a bit of coffee so I think you can have a bit of coke. Or try caffeine-free coke?

I want an ice-cold coke now!

TheChristmasHolyHoneypeckle · 28/12/2009 21:49

Coke was my life line when I had morning sickness. I felt like I had a hangover all bloody day!

Missus84 · 28/12/2009 21:50

I think you're supposed to limit yourself to 5 cans a day because of the caffeine. Or a cup of tea and 2 cans etc.

maybebaby23 · 28/12/2009 21:55

I have craved coke in both my pregnancies! I limit myself to one can per day..but oh my gosh it is all i can think about..i have just finished todays can

I remember after i had DD1 my mum brought a can to hospital for me and it tasted different!!! I didn't drink it! It tastes sooooo much better when im pregnant! Better stop talking about it now otherwise i won't sleep tonight

TishTosh21 · 28/12/2009 22:02

im craving coke at the mo too. i usually dont drink any fizzy drinks, DP always has coke in the house so i can give in to the craving whenever

Kitsilano · 28/12/2009 22:03

as long as you dont add vodka...

katnkittens · 28/12/2009 22:08

Yea it's the caffeine you have to be careful with but you can always get caffeine free if you're worried.

I love it but have to be careful.. I have wind issues when pg not helped by fizzy drinks

It's to do with the caffiene. iirc you can drink 5 cans a day without going over the reccomended caffine limit. But you might want to look that one up again. You are definately okay to have a couple of glasses/cans a day though.

FiveSoloRings · 28/12/2009 22:19

I was the same when pg with Dd, it was even better wit lime or lemon in. Can't abide the stuff normally though.

minkulus · 28/12/2009 22:21

OOH thankyou, thankyou! I have been feeling so guilty in case there was some real nasty that i should avoid in the fizzy bit! My MIL is convinced that drinking any kind of soda makes you fat; she heard it on Radio 4- apparently !
i will have some when i feel particularly sick and i shall toast the lovely ladies of MN

Fizzy drinks helped my morning sickness better than anything when it was at its worst.

Fizzy water can help to stave off the coke cravings...tho I agree with others, it's certainly not the worst thing you can have when pregnant.

BiscuitStuffer · 28/12/2009 22:36

Apparently craving coke / other fizzy drinks is a sign that you're lacking in phosphates....

FiveSoloRings · 28/12/2009 23:24

With me it was that I craved anything sour/sharp/bitter etc...

twogirls1more · 29/12/2009 11:58

If you listen to all the "warnings" about potentially harmful things to have during pregnancy you would live on water!I say you just need to apply abit of common sense and listen to your body. If you over analyse everything you put in it, you'll go mad! Enjoy!!

ronshar · 29/12/2009 12:06

Apart from the damage to your teeth and your stomach lining.
Too much caffine is a big risk to early pregnancy.
Proper fat coke is the only thing to help imvhe!
However if you are only going to have one a day then crack open that tin and drink away.

I found that really cool with a couple of chunks of ice was the best way to enjoy it normally about 11am

mmmm i'm really craving coke. Is there more or less caffine in a can of coke than in a cup of coffee?

Ive tried and failed to find caffine free coke

Missus84 · 29/12/2009 19:26

Much less in coke than coffee. You're supposed to stick to under 200milligrams of caffeine a day which iirc is:

1 filter coffee
OR
2 instant coffees
OR
2 mugs of strong tea
OR
5 cans of coke

So, one cup of tea or instant coffee and 2 cans of coke is ok in a day.

mmmm I really need some coke too and I never touch the stuff usually

As missus says, 200mg is ok. This is a list I found on babycentre:

? 1 mug of instant coffee = 100mg
? 1 cup of instant coffee = 75mg
? 1 cup of brewed coffee = 100mg
? 1 cup of tea = 50mg
? 1 can of cola = 40mg
? 1 can of "energy" drink = 80mg
? 1 x 50g bar of plain chocolate = up to 50mg
? 1 x 50g bar of milk chocolate = up to 25mg

WickedWitchSouthWest · 30/12/2009 00:37

just thought I'd put all the info up I found here

minkulus · 30/12/2009 21:11

Thanks for all the helpful info. I am trying to ignore some of the cravings for coke and also cut down on tea as I realised I was drinking far too much! I have to remember to drink more water or juice etc, but old habits die hard!
I actually can't wait for the coke craving to go as I really don't like how gassy it makes me feel!
