excessive fetal movementsat 37 wks?

This baby has suddenly gone nuts. Properly violently trashing around, all over the place, ribs, cervix, organs. Moving so much and so fast I have just thrown up (although anything makes me throw up these days!).

He has been like this for about 45 mins, and he will not stop. He has not been this active before.

I called the number on notes, put through to the labour ward, who told me to stop worrying, it will settle down 'is this your first dear? have a warm bath'. DH thinks she must know what she is talking about, as she is the midwife.

But I read that it could be a sign of distress if it comes on suddenly?

Do you have a community midwife you can ring instead of the labour ward? Ours tend to be more helpful & sympathetic than the ones at the hospital.

It means it's getting ready ..... DS2 did that - very unnerving and then on the day I actually gave birth - very little I actually got quite worried.

Probably get it checked out thogh as they say any unusual patterns should be looked at but I would not worry.

Thanks cathy. The community midwife number is only available between 9-10am. My midwife is never available. I can leave a message and she will get back to me in the next couple of days. I called another number which was given on the back of the notes as number to call after 20 wks if unable to talk to own midwife, and some woman answered, who put me through to some bloke on the labour ward who then finally put me through to a midwife, who dismissed it completely out of hand. I felt like a child. DH thinks I am being paranoid. Which I think I am. Probably.

I am sure its all fine.

He has calmed down now. Which now also worries me. Can't win today.

I think have also heard that you should report excess movement. How annoying to have such a patronising midwife.
I'm 37 weeks too, not first baby but still anxious about every little thing so you have my sympathies!
Can you ring your own community midwife for advice?

I might just go and have a bath anyway. I am a bit fed up with this pg now, its been a little stressful, or rather I have been!

I am happy for him to arrive safe and sound now. Well, after today, he can come along when he likes.

If you're still worried, don't worry about ringing again. Being embarrassed about making a fuss is not a good enough reason not to.

Mine can arrive anytime after tomorrow morning if it likes as will be 37 weeks then. Am currently staying in awaiting delivery of home birth kit!

I was still overdue but for the last few weeks he went mad!! Sometimes it got to the point when i just wished it would stop IYKWIM as it was really uncomfortable.

One episode co-incided with quite strong braxton hicks - are you getting these? I never got them with DS1, or i can't remember them as much. I did actually call my hospital and they were happy to put me on a monitor for half an hour to check all OK.
I think you sjould go and check it out if nothing else to make you feel better. I always err on side of caution.

twolittlekings funnily enough I have just had, immediately afterwards, a majorly strong BH. My entire bump has gone completely solid from top to bottom, and has stayed that way!

I think it will be fine - but go get checked out as at least you will know for sure.

The bh that one time did last for quite a long period - at least 3 hours so i thought i was in labour but was not - unfortunately!!!

but get it checked where? the labour ward are not interested. So should i go to gp? He can at least check the heartbeat...

Pavlov I had a severe BH once that lasted over an hour. It was really odd. Bump rock hard, I was hot and couldn't breath properly. But then it passed and I just had normal Bh after that.

With regards to the op I had a few moments when the baby went nuts and did major movements , I was a bit worried and if it happened more than once in a day I'd have gone to be checked.

do you have an antenatal day assessment unit at your hospital? If your one does not then I would find one near you that does and walk in. You will definitely be seen but you ma have to wait. They will at the very least put you on a heart monitor and have a feel of your tummy. You could try the GP but all our one has is a fetal heart listener - not one that measures it over time.

It depends on how you are feeling but I am such a worrier I would!

I think the day assessment is on the labour ward. I recall with last pg I had to have monitoring as DD stopped growing at 36 wks, and that was on the labour ward.

I will give it an hour. DH is out of the bathroom and enough time has passed so I can brave it in the bath

Just remembered that I mentioned this 'baby going crazy' thing to the community MW and the MW on the labour ward when I went to be assesed once, and they both seemed very calm about it and said it shows baby is happy and healthy. But then the Community MW said to me on a separate visit that I should get any 'out of character' movements/behavior checked out. Confusing!!

princessmel I have always thought to get abnormal signs checked out too, and I read that sudden thrashing movement can be a sign of distress due to for example the cord wrapping around baby's neck. The baby has not so far been this violently active, so all over the place. He has his moments of course, but its usually clear what is going on, wriggling his legs into my ribs, or bashing his head against my pelvis or doing a mexican wave or something, this was all his limbs, whole body the lot and it frightened me - i considered it to be unusual. I mean, if they got calls from me every other day, i would not be surprised at the flippancy, but she was so dismissive immediately even though I have not called before, its my second baby (so perhaps less irrational in theory, although not in practice) and i was clearly concerned.

But then she was right, no need to be reassuring with it, just get me off the phone so someone with urgent issues can call i guess.

I have heard the same - that a lot of thrashing about can mean distress. In fact (don't want to scare you as you are probably fine) a few of my SANDS friends have experienced the same when there has been something wrong. I feel very when I hear of midwives being dismissive like this - the last thing you want is to put someone off ringing up. Not good that she made you feel patronised.

If you are still worried or don't feel the movements are now normal then don't be afraid to ring up again, speak to someone else if necessary and tell them you are anxious and would like to be checked out.

Hey. Baby has been having fits and spurts of activitiy, quite aggressive, but not as violent as this morning, along with quite hard BH, I am wondering if he might have changed positions, some-one on my ante-natal thread suggested it as a possibility and it does make sense, along with a lump sticking out of right hand side, feels like a bum, and that should be the other side, as per scan 2 weeks ago, and ante natal checkup on thursday! Belly feels sore and solid, and dh says i look ready to pop where i did not yesterday, but I think he is ok.

ut, I also feel generally unwell and wonder if he reacted to that. Had a slight sore throat this morning, and now have achey muscles, headache, and threw up in sainsburys carpark - nothing more than a cold i think but feels worse at this stage pf pg! DH's attitude to the whole thing is 'unwell, story of this pg, you have done nothing but worry this pg'

I am keeping an eye on movements, but actually feel happier that I can feel some. Now. But i am a little anxious in a can't explain way so will call the MW advice line tomorrow. DH thinks I am being paranoid.

Pavlov, I am a complete worrier and did not enjoy my recent last pregnancy (DS2 now 15 wks). I think if you feel anxious you should do what makes you feel better. No-one else can know how you are feeling and never let anyone put you off checking as it is essentially up to you at the end of the day. Hope you get a good night. Thinking of you

Thanks twolittlekings i did not worry like this with DD, and we had some actual concerns with her weight. Although there were concerns, that actual pregnancy in terms of health was relatively straightforward apart from regular vomiting, i did not spend the entire time going what is this? Is it anything? Is it nothing?

...i have had some strong bd today, and currently feeling a lot of pressure on my backside, and base of belly, not contractions or anything time specific, it comes and goes, but defintely think this baby is up to something
