I am suffering SPD (for the second time) and just need to vent without driving everyone else on my pregnancy thread mental. Not that they aren't supportive but I still have 20 weeks to go and I don't want to ruin their pregnancies by talking about mine!

Please come and join me so I don't feel so alone, and feel free to share tips if you have any....

^ good ideas leoni it was difficult for me at first, i had to tell people that the ligaments are too loose and my hips are therefore loose, which means they rub together and cause excrutiating pain. i was quickly on crutches, it helps show people how much it affects your mobility and pain, its a visual reminder.
i didnt get any sympathy from my dad at first as i hardly see him and he was all like, well its normal in pregnancy and most people are fine and get better (wtf, i know noone whos SPD has got better!!) but my mum was brilliant, as she sees me evry day and how much pain etc im in

LooL00 · 24/05/2010 19:50

mrsS even one of my relatives who is a Professor of Physiotherapy knows nothing about it.She sent me some exercise sheets but I couldn't and shouldn't do any of them. That's what's so nice about seeing my physio, all she does is treat spd and she doesn't think I'm making a fuss so I'm not.I tell people that the physio told me that if I don't take it easy I'm going to land up on crutches. Off to take it easy right now. Sleep well or ok depending on what your expectations are.

MrsSenior · 24/05/2010 20:17

Thanks guys. I think it might all be easier after I see the physio on Thursday. Just fed up of sounding and feeling like a big moaning wimp. And to DH too, he is very supportive but I jsut feel like all I do is whinge. And I think it might help me actually take it easy after the physio too, cos at the moment my head is just going along with what everyone (except you lot) is telling me about it being normal and will pass etc etc, even though I know it isn't and it won't.

Sorry for the confusing waffley post. Its great to have people to talk to who actually know what they are talking about! AAHHHH You guys !!

Hope everyone has a decent night.
xx

ktwiltshire · 24/05/2010 21:05

Dont worry, it takes a while sometimes for people to understand how truly painful and disabling this SPD thing is. i got on cruthces as soon as i could, helped me walk better and further so i could get out more, and helped other people around see how much it affects things.

hope everyone gets at least some sleep tonight!

whimsicalname · 24/05/2010 22:15

i call it pelvic separation when people huff and puff at me. While it's not entirely accurate, i think it gives a better idea of what's what. and sounds kind of squeamish!

my parents, both doctors, weren't entirely sympathetic until my mum's hairdresser got signed off work with spd. I think they thought i was being a whinger.

LooL00 · 25/05/2010 10:00

Good morning everyone.

So KTW it's TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!

mrsS, do you feel that crutches would help you walk more easily? because if you do you should ask the physio for them, since you're still going to keep dashing about at work whether or not we all tell you to rest! Some physios just give you the crutches and hope you don't come back, others try to keep you going without them, but in your case they might stop you getting any worse.

I've been hit this week by preglegs, like the 'normal' pregnacy aching legs that just feel really heavy and now I feel like I'm dragging these legs with me whenever I stagger anywhere. Got DH to take dc1 to school this morning as dc2 doesn't do nursery on tues, it was going to make him 10mins late for work but we (due to going out of routine) managed to forget to put suncream on him so DH had to bring him back and so was REALLY late.I'm looking forward to half term and not having to go out at all.

MrsSenior · 25/05/2010 10:14

Morning everyone

LooLOO I don't know about the crutches - I guess they would probably help, not sure I could really do my job with them though? Maybe with one I could? I think I will go and speak to occ health at work after I have seen the physio. I'll tell them that you guys have told me I need to take it easy or else and I am a bit scared of you!! Hee.

Hope your DH doesnt get in too much trouble for being late

Whimsi pelvic seperation sounds much more impressive! I'll try that one.

kt How you doing today, hope yesterday wasnt too much of strain with all the visitors and did you manage to get out of the house? Looking forward to/nervous about tomorrow I expect. I wonder if you can get tinternet in hospital - how on earth will we all cope without hearing from you otherwise???

whimsicalname · 25/05/2010 11:09

kt good luck tomorrow. You must be excited / relieved to become to the end of your pregnancy. I really see why the Victorians called it a 'confinement' when you can't even walk to the end of the road. All the very best, and I look forward to hearing from you leaping around the ward in relief!

everyone else What more can i do to get this baby out of my tum? If I've been late twice before, I'm guessing I'll be late again. any positive stories to the contrary?

ktwiltshire · 25/05/2010 11:37

whimsi well its more likely to be earlier the more kids you have, at least thats what everyone tells me. i was a week late (and induced) with my first, just 1 day late spontaneous with DD2, and who would know with this one!

mrsS the crutches might be good for work, it will keep everyone aware of your limitations? def have a word with occ health, they should be able to help things

looloo ive got major achey legs too, im putting it down to muscle wastage from not using mine!!

yesterday was busy busy, but it did mean the day went faster than normal, which is good, as time is going rather slooooow!
im looking forward to this being the end, might be a 2/3 days before she actually comes out, im hoping that the induction fails and we get a csection, but at this point im just happy the end is so close. not planning on jumping around the ward, but def planning on not leaving the hospital till ive seen and got a plan from a physio.

im resting this afternoon, codeine induced haze on the sofa, well me trying to sleep and half getting there! meal out tonight and we are planning on stopping off at mcdonalds for breakfast before we check in to the hospital.

theres no internet for patients at the hospital, i will have my phone which has mini internet, going to try and post from there to let you guys know when its all over, will have to see if my phone lets me!

LooL00 · 25/05/2010 11:50

Don't know whimsi, but some people say that bouncing on a gymball shakes it down in the right direction but IMO it will come when it is ready.Oh and eating lots of chocolate cake is sure to bring on labour eventually(but you do need to eat A LOT).
I'm hoping mine will be early again but if it isn't I'll have the consultant on at me about induction and by the time I get to 40w I won't have the energy to fight my corner.Hope it doesn't get to that stage.
I'm thinking of starting the chocolate cake eating pretty soon just to make sure.
Thanks mrsS DH won't get in trouble for being late but might just annoy a few customers.

ktwiltshire · 25/05/2010 11:54

testing testing. posting from my phone!

LooL00 · 25/05/2010 11:56

hearing you loud and clear ktw

MrsSenior · 25/05/2010 12:08

Chocolate cake - now there is a rule I CAN stick to!! I'd say if I start eating say 2 a day about now then by the time I am due I can have increased my intake to probably 7 or 8 a day (got to do these things gradually)... Sounds like a plan!

Hattieboomboom · 25/05/2010 14:19

Hello all

I?ve been told by a chiropractor and my midwife that I have mild SPD - I am 27 weeks pregnant. However, a physiotherapist I saw this morning advised me that it probably isn't SPD because when she was pressing on my pubic bones it wasn?t causing me much (if any) pain. My symptoms include quite severe pain around my coccyx area and a stiff, strained feeling in between my legs, with very little range of movement without pain, i.e. I can?t open my legs very far. The lower back pain is the main problem, and this is all I was suffering with for about 4 weeks, until the pain and stiffness right at the top of my inner thighs, in between my legs started about two weeks ago

Obviously I hope the physio was right and it isn?t SDP, but I want to ensure I get the right diagnosis and treatment in case it is.

What do people think - SDP or just backache with a bit of pregnancy / hormone related pelvic pain??

LooL00 · 25/05/2010 16:05

poor you hattieboomboom, it's a bit difficult to argue with the physio but with me on a good day my pubic bone feels sort of ok particularly if I'm lying down. I've had spd 3 times now and with dc2 the pain went down the inside of my thighs, with this one it stays in the pubic bone. I've had pain in the middle of my lower back too. How specialised was the physio? Have you looked at the pelvic partnership website as it describes symptoms so if you think you've got it you could ask for another opinion.
Whatever you've got you sound like you could do with sitting on the sofa for a while so if you hang around I'm sure you'll get a bit more advice.

ktwiltshire · 25/05/2010 17:17

Hi hattie it sounds like it could be PGP/SPD, mine started like that and got worse, mine started earlier though. its worth keeping in touch with the physio as if it does get worse, you will need their help and assistance again.
the part you said about not being able to open your legs def sounds like PGP/SPD to me, but im not qualified, it just sounds so familiar to what im suffering with, and i have extremely severe SPD.
pregnancy does create a certain amount of lower back pain and hip pain from the normal hormone adjustment that happends in pregnancy, but with anything hormonal, a small adjustment in the levels and it can reek havock with our bodies (like PMT!!).

keep in touch with your physio, ask for help whenever you need it and dont be afraid to ask for painkillers, no need to be in pain when you dont need to be.

remember that physios sometimes have no experience of treating or dealing with SPD so misdiagnose frequently, my physio diagnosed me with it, but just gave me crutches and a few dos and donts, and sent me on my way, said there was nothing more she could do for me, which annoys me somewhat because a physio with experience in treating it can actually do a lot more to help, but it does rely on finding someone with experience.

if its really getting to you, and you are able to afford it, search around for a chiropractor with experience in dealing it who will be able to give you much more specialised advice, help and treatment

good luck

ktwiltshire · 26/05/2010 06:24

Good luck with your exam mrsS.

MrsDmamee · 26/05/2010 13:56

spd sufferer here..hopped on the sofa weeks ago but havent posted much.

I agree with tillyscoutmum
my own physio has been very good with hand manipulation of the pelvis and I have felt the difference this pg, the pain is more managable.

Ive kind of hit a plateau with regards to my spd that it hasnt gotten any worse.
At 35 weeks pg i have days where i can manage stairs.
I still get most of my aches in bed turning and sitting too long during the day.

ktwiltshire · 26/05/2010 14:05

its been a bit of a to do in here. got in this morning and after waiting an hour to see the registrar i was told that they were no longer happy to induce me as it is unlikely to work. after still not getting an answer on what had changed from when the plan was made to induce they got my old consultant up (who is mean and i asked to not see again months ago). after much discussion about risk to the baby and other type things the dr agreed to try induction tomorrow after a growth scan late tomorrow morning, as there is no space for a scan today. so its been a very frustrating day to say the least. staying in overnight as the car journey kills my hips. will update again when i have better news!

LooL00 · 26/05/2010 14:25

OH ktw that's an awful way to treat you.Staying in is probably a good idea as it will focus their minds on dealing with you rather than messing you about again. I wonder if they've got an accessible bath that you could wallow in for a bit of a treat. poor you.

Hi mrsDmamee, sitting in one position is what kills me too.And I don't turn over in bed. Hope you can make yourself comfortable today.

MrsSenior · 26/05/2010 18:18

Oh no kt, that all sounds miserable! I hope you manage to get sorted tomorrow or at least maybe see the better consultant to discuss?

Thanks for your good luck wishes guys, exam was hard but over now. Just a 2500 word essay to write now - got 3 weeks though!! And whooo hooooo, physio tomorrow! Finally!

Hello MrsD

MrsSenior · 26/05/2010 21:19

How is everyone today - very quiet!!
