What do babies wear under their sleepsuits??

Got a load of basic long sleeved sleep suits with feet for our baby boy who's due in jan which i'm guessing he'll spend the majority of his time in during the first couple of months but am having a panic as i'm now not sure if he'll need vests (sleeveless ones with poppers between the legs) underneath these?
also got some long sleeved t shirts to wear with little trousers will he need a vest under these too???
Am feeling rather clueless! Thanks for your help ladies xx

short sleeve vest (with poppers). vest with nearly everything really.

the vests are for underneath everything or the nappy gets all untidy, it keeps them neat and warm. I am still using vests that you describe underneath everything and my baby is 14 months now. You get used to it and then after a few weeks you get to just know how to dress your baby, with my first I used to call my parents and ask them stuff like this I always need about 14 in each size as when the anppy leaks poo or wee it leaks onto the vests first so you change and wash them a lot

Rule of thumb is that the baby needs one more layer than you do. If you tuck your finger under their clothes and feel teh top of their back or chest, you can get a good idea as to whether they are warm enough/chilly/overheated.

Envelope necks are easiest to get on and off.

Ours wore popper vests under everything (autumn/winter babies). Pooper vests are particularly useful as they help keep the nappy on! You can also get longsleeved popper vests, whichh we found very useful for very cold winter nights.

Other layers can be cardies etc, which are easy to add or remove.

Ds (born December) wore sleeveless vests under sleepsuits, unless it was really cold, when he had short-sleeved ones. This is in a centrally heated house.

At night, he had sleeveless vest, sleepsuit and grobag thing.

I think that I've remembered rightly .

Yeah, popper vests are great. DS stopped wearing them at about 9/10 months and mostly wears 'normal' clothes now - t-shirt and trousers, pyjamas at night. But until that he wore a vest underneath clothes in the day, and under a babygro at night, depending on the temperature.

phew! Thanks so much for ur answers ladies.... Off to asda to pick up something for dinner so will grab some popper vests whilst i'm there.... Dh thinks i'm crazy for worrying about this when still have at least 18wks left but i'm feeling the need to be extra prepared

you're not crazy! Took the midwife in the hospital to tell us our LO needed a vest under her sleepsuit (blush) until that point we wondered when we'd use them!

I hadn't even thought about this!

DD was a summer baby (June), born in a heatwave - 26 degrees + for the first 2 - 3 months of her life and she wore as little as possible all the time.

This one is due in January and it never occurred to me that I would need to put more layers on the baby - pregnancy brain is obviously more pronounced second time around! And its not as if DD was born all that long ago! I feel a shopping trip coming on!

Believe me, you're not crazy. I took popper vests in to hospital with trousers thinking they were tops! Didn't take any romper suits or anything!

Ah, a voice of dissent here, but only because DS was a very over-hot baby in himself - he was born in December and I couldn't wrap him up too much because he overheated at the drop of a hat. Sweated like a pig through his head as well.

Here in Australia, where I am now (but not when DS was born) you can get proper baby-sized singlets vests to go under the sleep suits - I preferred them because there weren't so many poppers around the crotch, but I even had to dispense with those at times.

And even now, DS being 21.5mo, I still use the popper vests as tops, with just shorts (or long-sleeved popper vests with longer trousers). My boy really can't take too many layers but each baby is individual.

Tehe, vests...we call them onesies. And yes, they go under everything, pretty much always. My dd is 18 mths and still wears them quite a lot.

I think with the newborns there was something about not closing the buttons, so it wouldn't rub the cord stumb, but that also depends on how tight yours are. And any that you can find that button not in the crotch but on the belly: get them! It is so much easier to button on the belly than in between those kicking legs.

Oooo I am due with first in November and had thought that the long sleeved sleep suit was all they worse I am so clueless. So the popper vests are the ones without legs, right? But with poppers around the bum and with short sleeves? I am guessing we will need hundreds of these then! Thanks ladies.... How on earth will I ever look after this little thing???!?!?!

Thanks for the question too - due february and totally clueless about clothes - is there a website anywhere which tells you what should be on lovely baby? just to save the MANY phone calls to my 300milesaway mum/200milesaway mum-in-law!

What will be on tiny baby: 1. diaper, 2. popper vest (haha), 3. sleep suit, 4. hat during the day, but not recommended at night (keep temp stable), 5. scratch mittens (or socks over hands) if baby tends to scratch itself - they are not hugely coordinated and can hurt their eyes.

Then: stick finger into the outfit onto skin and see if it feels too cold or warm. If too cold, put blanket over or cardigan. :-) Pretty simple really.

You might have a look at how to swaddle using a receiving blanket as it cna be useful. I think if you swaddle probably leave the sleep suit off but have another blanket ready in case babe gets too cold.

And it will all work itself out within a few days! No worries. :-)

phew i had no idea either what baby needs to wear!!

I have plenty of those vest things with short legs and arms is that right? my sister has told me the ones with long arms and legs are sleepsuits i assume baby wears these to bed with short vests!

I think the thing is it becomes second nature to most people once they have babies so people wouldn't think to tell you! I was aware of popper vests, but only because my oldest sister had her first baby when I was 9 - so at an age where I was really interested and took it all in. Actually, she had differences in her parenting from my 2nd sister (she ff'd while my other sister bf'd, she had more routine while my other sister just went with the flow generally, she used terry nappies while my other sister was a fan of disposables) so I am lucky in that I sort of got to see the whole range of things you can do with a baby. However even with all that I was quite clueless about some things until I started TTC myself!

If you see any vests with poppers all the way down rather than just at the bottom they are fab - so when the nappy does leak you don't have to lift vest with poo over a wriggling head. They tend to be the French ones like in La Redoute or Vertbaudet (or instructions to anyone going on holiday to France to pick you up some cheap ones in any supermarket if it's not too late).

Vests with poppers with nearly everytihng! if he feels hot one day just put a sleepsuit on him without a vest......i always used vests until my little boy was about 1 month old. he was born june this year and it was hot so i stopped using them. He is back in vests now though as it has got cold again!

I would use popper vest as in january it is cold and he will need them.

And be prepared to throw out a few vests because you have to cut them off your baby at 3am to avoid having to bath them after pulling poo over their head (or was that just me ?)

And this is someone who could sluice cloth nappies without heaving talking !
