What do babies wear under their sleepsuits??

Got a load of basic long sleeved sleep suits with feet for our baby boy who's due in jan which i'm guessing he'll spend the majority of his time in during the first couple of months but am having a panic as i'm now not sure if he'll need vests (sleeveless ones with poppers between the legs) underneath these?
also got some long sleeved t shirts to wear with little trousers will he need a vest under these too???
Am feeling rather clueless! Thanks for your help ladies xx

Argh can't view the site (as am on work computer). They'd have buttons on the side of the neck or a couple on the front as there'd be some design on the front.

Too much bother when for some reason they've wee'd up their back at 3am and you only changed them an hour before....

But obviously that's just my opinion

I preferred cellular blankets to grobags because they are less likely to over heat in them and DS was another very hot baby.

Another first timer here - due any day!

So, here's my clueless bedding question: I've bought the NCT swaddling blanket, which turns out to be made of thin cotton t-shirt material. Do you think I'd need to add a cellular blanket on top of the swaddling? If I didn't, he'd only be wearing his cotton vest, cotton sleepsuit and the thin swaddling blanket - all made of fairly thin t-shirt material. Can't help but think that if I were put to bed only wearing 3 t-shirts I might get a bit cold!

Cellular blankets are great for prams, chucking over a baby who falls asleep in a cold car, even using on a newborn (if they're small, some grobags have minimum weight recommendations). So just blankets!

I don't know if anyone else had this problem, but I found that sleep suits were much easier if they opened all the way down. Some of the side opening sleepsuits are impossible to get a wriggling baby into IMO.

1Mum1 - some babies love being swaddled, our dd was swaddled really tightly until she was about 3 months because she had a strong moro reflex and her flailing arms and legs used to wake her up all the time otherwise. Other babies don't like it at all, and want to be unrestricted, so grobags are perfect for them from the start. IME, you won't find out which kind yours is until he/she is born! So, it's good you've got the grobag, but you can also try swaddling if you need to, and you can just use a bogstandard muslin cloth for that. Then, if it seems to work well, you can invest in a proper swaddling blanket. But by 3 months or so you'll need a grobag in any case.

So in other words, you are as well-prepared as you're going to be able to be!

No idea what cellular blankets are for, tbh, we bought several as well and my dd now uses them to make beds for her toys. I think in emergencies I may also have mopped up dribbly poo with them.

Comma what are they bodysuits you speak of which popper up at the belly rather than the crotch. i've never seen any like those but they sound fabulous!!

Can I ask what bedding my newborn will need -due in december? I've bought a gro bag (2.5 tog as it's dec) - can she go straight into this or should she start off in a swaddling blanket (she'll be in a moses basket)? Am a bit confused about this. Also what's a cellular blanket for - I've bought one but don't even know when to use it!

My babies have slept in their sleeping bags with a poppered vest and poppered sleepsuit (down the front of course) on under but we live in a cold old flat and despite the cetral heating it's always freezing.

I've been totally paranoid about putting blankets over them cos of the suffocation thing if they're a wriggler so I've got lots of granny knit jumpers and cardigans which they sleep in on top of their suits.

Not stylish I know but warm and comfy for them - they also fit well when they're newborn - all shop made stuff seems so huge and baggy when they're tiny.

asda vests are good as they have really wide necks (because that will seem important )
Also you will hate anything with poppers down the back!

And be prepared to throw out a few vests because you have to cut them off your baby at 3am to avoid having to bath them after pulling poo over their head (or was that just me ?)

And this is someone who could sluice cloth nappies without heaving talking !

Vests with poppers with nearly everytihng! if he feels hot one day just put a sleepsuit on him without a vest......i always used vests until my little boy was about 1 month old. he was born june this year and it was hot so i stopped using them. He is back in vests now though as it has got cold again!

I would use popper vest as in january it is cold and he will need them.

If you see any vests with poppers all the way down rather than just at the bottom they are fab - so when the nappy does leak you don't have to lift vest with poo over a wriggling head. They tend to be the French ones like in La Redoute or Vertbaudet (or instructions to anyone going on holiday to France to pick you up some cheap ones in any supermarket if it's not too late).

I think the thing is it becomes second nature to most people once they have babies so people wouldn't think to tell you! I was aware of popper vests, but only because my oldest sister had her first baby when I was 9 - so at an age where I was really interested and took it all in. Actually, she had differences in her parenting from my 2nd sister (she ff'd while my other sister bf'd, she had more routine while my other sister just went with the flow generally, she used terry nappies while my other sister was a fan of disposables) so I am lucky in that I sort of got to see the whole range of things you can do with a baby. However even with all that I was quite clueless about some things until I started TTC myself!

I have plenty of those vest things with short legs and arms is that right? my sister has told me the ones with long arms and legs are sleepsuits i assume baby wears these to bed with short vests!

I love this board, opened the thread thinking what a silly question and realised that I didn't have a clue!!! Thank you ladies for educating me about popper vests under sleepsuits my poor DD would have been dressed completely wrong withou

What will be on tiny baby: 1. diaper, 2. popper vest (haha), 3. sleep suit, 4. hat during the day, but not recommended at night (keep temp stable), 5. scratch mittens (or socks over hands) if baby tends to scratch itself - they are not hugely coordinated and can hurt their eyes.

Then: stick finger into the outfit onto skin and see if it feels too cold or warm. If too cold, put blanket over or cardigan. :-) Pretty simple really.

You might have a look at how to swaddle using a receiving blanket as it cna be useful. I think if you swaddle probably leave the sleep suit off but have another blanket ready in case babe gets too cold.

And it will all work itself out within a few days! No worries. :-)
