I haven't been able to do my jeans up since 5/6 weeks and now I'm really starting to look obviously pregnant. Which is difficult as I wasn't planning on telling people yet (especially as I've had a small bleed, MW said it was too early for a scan and probably OK, but I won't know if it is until 12 weeks).

I am feeling much sicker than last time as well. I know you show sooner with subsequent pregnancies but could this indicate something out of the ordinary eg multiples, or is it within normal range?

Bleurgh I feel crap...

erm... bump!

I got very bloated in the first few weeks and mistook it for a baby bump but it did go away and my 'real' bump started coming at about 11-12 weeks. I think its quite common to be bloated early on so dont panic!

LadyoftheBathtub · 05/08/2009 10:52

Thanks Smuddy. I can't bear any pressure on the bump at all - don't know if that supports bloating theory or not. So I have to wear maternity trousers / loose things which isn't helping me look any less pg!

hello,

I had exactly the same, plus what turned out to be an implantation bleed at around the same time, plus didn't want to tell people. I'm now 28 weeks pregnant and the baby is very healthy.

Stuff I found out that helped:

Had an appointment with a sympathetic GP (wasn't able to see midwife). She felt around the bump and assumused me everything felt fine.

My midwife said the some woman just get a bump early, and they then 'grow into it'. This has been my case and I don't feel huge compared to other women these days. On an optimistic note I think it minimises a massive growth spurt in the 20 something week stage and can (maybe) help reduce stretchmarks!

I was exactly the same re not being able to stand any pressure. My placenta is at the front (less usual but not a problem). I was toldat my 20 week scan that the not being able to tolerate any pressure was quite normal with a front placenta.

Finally, I spent a lot of time trying to look 'fat' as opposed to pregnant. Most people (including my boss) are far less observant than you think.

good luck and hope this helps

LadyoftheBathtub · 05/08/2009 14:42

Thank you Katy! It would actually be a good idea to see my nice GP - she has been away so I didn't see her when I first went. Reassuring to hear about your bleed too. The MW I spoke to on the phone did think it was implantation, I just didn't think it could happen as late as almost 7 weeks - but here's hoping.

People know we are trying and two people have asked. (One got lied to, one didn't!) But I won't be able to hide it much longer anyway...

I am exactly the same (only 6+1) and already wearing maternity clothes and being asked if I am pregnant!!

I feel like I ate too many pies.

Thankgod its not just me.

Oh yes and twins run in our family so I am doing the whole , OMG, what if I am this big because its multiples thing too!!

KatyS36 · 05/08/2009 16:48

I kept it hidden at work until my 20 week scan. Different clothes do make an amazing diference as to how obvious it is (in my case non maternity stuff in a bigger size). A couple of close girlfirends did consider that it was obvious once you knew, but they wouldn't necessarily have known otherwise.

I used to stand in front of a full length mirror each morning as ask DP 'does this just make me look fat?'

If the answer was yes that was that days work wear

CantThinkofFunnyName · 05/08/2009 16:55

I was the same as you, was in full blown maternity clothes at 6/7 weeks - in fact, we started telling people as it was sooo obvious. The bump wasnt just a flabby tummy - it was a serious pg bump that started from below the boobs! But as another poster indicated, it pops out and then you just grow into it. I'm 16 weeks now and actually have only just put on a couple more pounds than I had at 12 weeks (at that point I'd put on over a stone in weight)!! So, whilst I am on the larger side with my bump, I'm not tooooo much biggger than others I guess. Its definitely a subsequent pg thing - but feels embarrassing doesn't it?!

KatyS36 · 05/08/2009 16:59

Hope this also helps, debated whether to post as I don't want to scare you unnecessarily, but overall I though it more useful.

I had blood tests to check pregnancy hormone levels, which were high which was good. After this I had an 'emergency' scan at 6 weeks (just checked dates) on the NHS to rule out an eptopic pregnancy (I had stomach pain as well). This is reasonably routine although they often need to do it internally (Not the nicest but less bad than a smear).

It might be worth asking if this is possible in your case. In our case they saw both the baby and a heartbeat which was so nice and really reasurring.

However I really want to emphasis that I think I had other eptopic pregnancy symptoms, so your midwife may have been able to rule this out.

Also I started feeling dreadful at around this time, My midwife said that whilst it wasn't nice for me, it was a really good sign to her as this was a good pregnancy sign

Good luck

ZippysMum · 05/08/2009 17:05

I did and it was twins

I was in maternity trousers from week 8

wasabipeanut · 05/08/2009 17:05

I had real bloating from about 6-8 weeks and couldn't bear anything round my waist - even looseish waistbands. It seemed to morph into a more solid bump around 12 weeks or so.

hoops997 · 05/08/2009 17:07

same here, first pregnany and can't do up my work trousers and have had to sew a button on a bit of elastic.....wouldn't be so bad but I'm only 5+5

AngelaCarleen · 05/08/2009 17:22

I'm nearly twelve weeks now and had to go into maternity trousers at 9 weeks (as 'normal' clothes were just too tight).

I had a bleed at five weeks, seven weeks and nine weeks. Got a scan at seven weeks, maybe contact your local early pregnancy clinic to see about getting a scan if you're not getting anywhere with your midwife.

Congrats and good luck!!

LargeGlassofRed · 05/08/2009 17:26

yes had this, mine was twins too

mummy2looney · 05/08/2009 20:32

I had a bump too at 6 weeks and am now wearing maternity trousers for work at 7 weeks and am up a jean size in normal clothes. I wasn't planning on teling people so early but I don't think I can hide it much longer

LadyoftheBathtub · 06/08/2009 09:25

It was the MW at the pregnancy support unit who said I didn't need a scan. But I'm considering a private one because I would like to know what's going on in there. Obviously any bad news would be awful but I would rather know now if it's all gone wrong, than several weeks down the line.

Working on the "fat" wardrobe!

bubblesincambridge · 06/08/2009 11:56

Me too. First pregnancy. It was all bloating though.

My jeans got really uncomfortable from about 8-10 weeks. But then again, they were pretty tight to begin with. Been in maternity trousers/jeans since about 10 weeks, although still wearing normal t-shirts.

I'm now coming up to 18 weeks and only just feel as if I have a proper bump, but still the bloating makes me twice the size in the evening compared to the morning. But overall I don't think I'm expanding particularly rapidly so I think things have slowed down a bit.

So I think some people just get lots of bloating. Do you have IBS? I think that probably must cause it. I don't think it will mean that you will end up enormous which was my initial worry.

Fraochsmum · 06/08/2009 12:12

I also had bleeding early on after intercourse and had a scan at 8 weeks to rule anything nasty out. I had to go to an early pregnancy unit up in Glasgow, but the scan was very clear and you could see the heartbeat, plus she could tell there was only 1!
I din't think I would be able to hide my pg till week 12 because I put on a few kilos around the tenth week. However I'm now 18 + 4 and have just been asked by 2 seperate people if I'm deffo pg!! Now starting to worry about the mass stretchmarks when I suddenly wake up with a balloon for a belly...

1mum1 · 06/08/2009 12:20

I'm 23 wks now but I was defintely really big at 8 wks - it was making it really difficult to keep it a secret!

magicsarsie · 31/08/2009 17:49

Hi I am 9 1/2 weeks and definitely have a bump. I know a lot of people say you will show sooner with your second etc but I had my daughter 13 years ago so would have thought things would have been like a first. I am wondering about it being a multiple, as I am a fraternal twin, my maternal grandmother had fraternal triplets as siblings and I am 40 in a couple of weeks. All things that would add up in favour of it being a multiple. I work in a school so have been off for the last 6 weeks so will be going back with my very round 10 week bump. Looking forward to scan which is in just over 2 weeks.

LeeWT · 31/08/2009 20:42

magic my dh thinks we are having twins because my bump is so big at 8 weeks and tbh right now i'd be delighted because i dont want to ever have to be pregnant again, i'm sooooo sick so if there's two in there, happy days!

whens your scan?

magicsarsie · 01/09/2009 09:57

Lee my scan is 16th Sept, I will be 11 weeks 6 days when I have it. I always hated being a twin and haven't spoken to my twin sister for 8 years now, but would be very excited if it turned out I was having twins. My mom got HUGE when she was expecting us though and that wouldn't be so nice.

MACKAT · 01/09/2009 21:34

have bump too at 9 weeks. have raided wardrobe for non clingy clothes. will be tricky to keep hidden for 4 more weeks. had an early scan at 8 weeks and was told that the baby was 1.5 cm long and that was slightly towards the bigger end of scale. DD was 9lb 2 so no suprise. but how something 1.5 cm long can cause so much bump is a mystery.

Joeymac · 01/09/2009 21:50

I'm just 10 weeks with DC3 and feel huge and really bloated.

Managed to hide DS2 until 20 weeks at work -amazing what bigger trousers and a few black shirts and cardigans can hide. No-one guessed although I don't think I'll be able to hang out that this time long the way things are going.

I also had a bleed 3 times between 6-7 weeks and got internal and scan at EPU. They said 'implantation loss' which also surprised me that late on. Still worrying now (don't think it stops till they come out all ok really) so got private scan done on sunday as HNS one not till 14 weeks. £80 but worth every penny for the peace of mind seeing a heartbeat.

hayes · 01/09/2009 21:54

I was very big early on with my middle one, he was a ten pounder so don't know if this can affect things so early on. Congratulations
