Stupid question but ........Whats needed?

Im 17 weeks pregnant with baby no1 and im making a list of things im going to need and roughly how much it will all cost for when baby arrives.

Can anyone help and let me know the type of
things they brought for when baby arrived.

I want to wait a week before im due to buy anything. What do u think???

Hi i was in the same thought as u b4 my DD arrived, i got

Moses basket, Pram (graco quattro deluxe travel system), Bouncer, stocked up on nappies, nappy sacks, baby wipes, brought infacol and then gripe water, cartons of SMA milk, then the moses basket sheets, blankets, bibs, vests, sleepsuits, that was thwe main bits got the rest after she was born.

I bought (or was given):

pram
cot
crib
clothes
bottles
steriliser
breast pump
bedding
pram bedding
car seat
baby bath
nappies

i had to order my pram which took 8 weeks...

costs vary a lot depending if you wanna go budget, or splash out!

You can often pre-order the larger stuff but not collect it until a week or two before edd.

i know a lot of people want brand new for first baby but a lot of stuff you can get at a fraction of cost (esp on ebay or in local paper) moses baskets as theyre not in them much..cot even but just buy a new mattress, second hand buggy and if you have a carrycot on pram .i used to put that in the cot and it doubled up as a moses basket plus they dont give you grief when you put them in their own cot for real when theyve outgrown the moses basket..personally i find moses baskets too small and they wake themselves up by flinging their arms out and hitting the sides unless you swaddle them . if i was to have any more kids i would def go with the second hand option leaving you with more money to spend on stuff that youve just gotta have because its adorable

I would really recommend buying NOTHING new except cot mattress and car seat.

I bought everything second hand including all the baby's clothes and even washable nappies - I spent less than 500 quid.

I'd aim to get a lot of it in by the time you are six months, because if the baby comes early you will be stuck and too exhausted to get anything.

Actually one thing I wish I HAD spent money on was a few outfits for me in large sizes - I ended up wearing maternity clothes for months afterwards which was depressing.

I would certainly look around and at least order sooner than a week before you were due. What if the baby was born early?
That said, you can still shop after he or she is born!
But at the very least beforehand you need car seat, nappies, somewhere for baby to sleep (borrow a moses basket and buy a new mattress if you can) and a few babygrows.
My top tip for new mums is not to buy baby toiletries, all you need is a bottle of baby bath, all the baby moisturiser, baby lotion, baby oil etc that you might see if a waste of money.

I'm one of the all-new people! I wanted to get everything brand new for DS, and I don't regret it, even though I know I could have got it all a lot cheaper.
This is the only time I am going to do this, and it was soooo much fun going out and choosing everything.
I do appreciate that I am very lucky to be in a position where I was able to buy whatever I wanted though

ooh yes, and agree... a week before you are due is probably too late!

I was in a lot of pain (SPD), and had the most enormous bump ever. I couldn't even get round Tesco by about 36/37 weeks (ended up going to 41) because it hurt too much and I was knackered!

i bought - second hand pram/pushchair (which dd slept in for first few weeks), couple of vests, nappies and was given a baby blanket. Later I bought a cot, feeding bra etc, but all of it came in under 300 quid or so. People gave me loads after she was born though.

also wish I'd bought more elasticated/loose clothing for those fat months after the birth. baggy tops are really good if you're breastfeeding.

I didn't buy anything except my buggy - and then was given another one by my cousin!
I got a brand new graco metrosport buggy for £50 on ebay - you can get a lot of new stuff as well as second-hand, much cheaper - and less stress than trawling through the shops
Otherwise, you will need a car-seat, vests and babygros and nappies, and maybe a cot/moses basket.
bath seats are good too, and a good stock of biscuits for your post-natal visitors

Sam I would definatly get things before the week before you're due.
I'm 40 weeks and three days today and for the last 2 or 3 weeks I haven't even had the energy to go to Tescos (have to send dp with a list).

Its easy to underestimate how tired you will be in those final few weeks. I'm really glad that I got everything sorted by the time I was 35 weeks pg, now I can just concentrate on relaxing.

Oh yes baby toiletries are NONSENSE and you are given loads of freebies at the hospital anyway!

just remember that you will probably be given much more stuff than you ever expected - esp. clothes-wise

Sam - don't buy a moses basket or crib - get one of thesehammocks . It is without a doubt my "best buy" and it will last until your baby is 12mths. My dd2 has slept in it since birth and has been sleeping through the night since 6 weeks - I'm convinced it's because of the hammock - I racve about it to anyone and everyone!

With the benefit of hindsight I'd say you will need:

Car seat
Somewhere for the baby to sleep
Bedding
Some babygros and vests
Nappies
Breastpump if that's your chosen feeding method
Storage bags/containers for breastmilk if you're breastfeeding
Bottles if you're formula feeding
A steriliser for either bottles or breastpump
Baby monitor
Baby bath (although we used a washing up bowl for the first 2 months)
Order your pushcahir so that it can be delivered once you're home from hospital
Changing mat, cotton wool or wipes

Anything else you can buy afterwards and can wait a week or two.

Aw with baby no1 I didn't have bump until about 26 weeks now on baby no 4 at 16 weeks I'm bigger!

Oh has anyone mentioned invaluble muslin squares? Used to do cute pink or blue ones at mothercare

i got everything new for ds and we will be using it all this time around. Only thing we are buying is a new pram with toddler seat.

I would recommend getting stuff at least month b4 baby is due only because the last couple of weeks u feel so huge and tired you really dont want to then have to start worrying about going to buy things. If you are worried about them being in the house then leave them with someone.
The vitals are bedding and bed for baby, care seat and obviosuly steriliser/bottles if u r bottle feeding.

Don't waste your money on a baby bath! Just get a bath support for your bath. They sell good ones at babies'r'us or have a look on ebay.
Baby isn't in it for more than three months and they take up loads of room.
