baby towels - worth bothering with?

have been having a good debate with friends, do you think paying the extra for a 'baby' towel is worth it or just go with nice bath towels?

No, complete waste of money. They are thinner than normal nice towels and my ds hated the hoody bits!

just use what you have.

The hooded ones in particular are useless past about 2 weeks - especially if you have a decent size baby - a smaller baby and it might be useful for a month or so.......

I wouldnt bother - after a couple of months they are too small to really wrap baby up, and chances are you will probably get some as presents anyway. Just use towels you have already or buy normal bath towels and at least then you will get some good use from them.

i have the hoodie ones and still use them for dd1 (nearly 4) and dd2 (2). i think they are great.

Lordy no.

Get nice regular towels you can all use. Until your little darlings get threadworms, that is, then it's strict towel segregation .

I found them far too small.

I use them on my one year old and 3 year old, but only as i got two free from SMA (joined their club or something didnt even buy formula) and like a million free from vertbaudet

I do still use the hoodie type for dd2. I don't actually try and wrap her up in it, I just disregard the hood and use it like a "normal" towel - she is almmost 2. So in answer to your question, don't buy any specially, but if you get given any then they are useful.
Mine are roughly the size of a cheap bathtowel.

Your baby should have their own towel(s) - but it doesn't need to be a special design/style.

I disagree with FAQ. My DDs were all too small for the hoods and it covered their whole face....so apparently they suit no-one!

I bought loads. DS was too big for them by about 6 months, and prefers bigger, thick normal towels.

no I don't mean the hood part - I don't think I even bothered with that with the ones I was given for DS2 and 3. Just the size of them is so minute

don't buy any. you will most likely get a couple as gifts which are handy when the baby is small.

I bought 2 and was given a further 2. I only stopped using them for DD when she turned 1. they are quite thin but they dry quickly. We go swimming twice a week so lots of laundry.
I found them useful but obviously everyone is different.

I only have one hooded towel that was any good. It was from M&S and is much larger than the traditional baby ones with a seperate hood on the back (complete with ears!). It is also nice quality and ds still uses it at 3.

However the little sguare ones aren't much use for long as others have said.

Risk of infection i believe.

I don't know what the actual level of risk is but I thoughht it was nice for my DCs to have their own twels which hadn't been anywhere near DPs willy or my fanjo.

Perhaps I am odd though?

Yeah but not at hot enough wash to kill bugs.

Not that i actaully think there are any bugs on DPs fanjo that shouldn't actually be there.

OK, OK, Ok ....I read it in a baby book...and I did it. But I think it is nice for baby to have segregated towels. But then I wouldn't even share a bath with my DDs when I had my AF...I guess you can just call me wierd.

Funny I should read this thread, I bathed DS this morning and thought how bloody useless the baby towels were that I'd bought for him! You'd think I'd know better cause he is my 2nd dc and I made the same mistake then!

ANy suggestions as to waht you can do with them? Was thinking floor cloths.

I asked for a couple of Cuddledry towels as gifts (as they are quite expensive and didn't want to pay for them myself) and we used them loads in the first 6 months. I found bathing DS quite difficult and having the towel hanging round my neck at least ensured I stayed dry and ds got dry.

They are also big enough to carry on using now that he is much bigger.

I found normal baby towels to be too small and generally pretty useless.
