My sister (8 months pregnant) has to have a scan tomorrow because the midwife thinks she is too small. Has anyone else had this happen?

She is tiny considering she only has a month left and has only put on a stone so far, but they have said she isn't carrying much water & the baby seems very active. She is a small frame anyway & was only a size 8 before getting pregnant.

She has just text to say the midwife has booked her in for a scan tomorrow because she is 2.5cm under what she should be. My sister is a little worried now.

my mum was like this when she was pg with me, she didn't even need to wear maternity clothes, bump was so small, and i was a small baby.

is this her first? i was mis-measured with ds, turned out when it was double checked, the midwife hadn't been putting the tape as low down as she should have been. also, a friend of mine got called in for a scan as she'd measured small, only to come back from the scan being told she was big for dates instead!

Happened to a friend of mine, her DS was breach and the midwife hadn't realised. Baby was fine on the scan and settled head down not long after.

Pinkchampagne · 02/06/2009 11:11

Yes this is her first & she does look pretty small - it took ages for her to show at all. At her 20 wk scan the baby was bang on average for it's size even though you couldn't really see any evidence of a bump.

I was told at 35 weeks that I was still measuring the same as at 30 weeks so was sent off in a panic for a growth scan. The scan showed DD2 was normal size and she born at 40 weeks weighing 7lb 10oz.

Moosy · 02/06/2009 11:15

Oh and I am size 8 too and my DD2 bump wasn't very big looking.

giraffesCantRunA10k · 02/06/2009 11:15

Hope her scan goes well.

Blackduck · 02/06/2009 11:19

Sounds like me, I was scanned and then monitored alot in the last month (actually induced at 38 weeks) ds was small 4 11 (but I was only 4 9 born) and is a fine healthy 6 year old....

Bettymum · 02/06/2009 11:25

My bump shrank quite late in my pregnancy, but grew again, the midwife reckoned that the baby was rolled up into a tight ball when she measured and it made the bump smaller. If it had still been small the next time I'd been measured, she'd have sent me for a scan. However I didn't need it. I did have to go for a scan at 39 weeks though as the midwife "lost" the head. DD was just a very wriggly baby

prettyfly1 · 02/06/2009 11:42

can happen all the time. Babies dont always stick to the rules - sometimes they can be sitting oddly which can affect readings and tbh midwives guesses can be wrong frequently. If baby is active and thriving I dont htink she will need to worry too much.

Pinkchampagne · 02/06/2009 12:08

Thank you all. Hopefully baby will be fine, but as it is her first pregnancy she is a little worried. Heartbeat is fine & it is moving a lot so seems healthy enough.

sounds like me too. Got induced 2 weeks before. ds weighed 5'8 and is a healthy 2 yo now

timmette · 02/06/2009 12:46

Weight gain is not always an indicator I put on 11 pounds and ds was 8 when he was born. Try not to worry.

Pinkchampagne · 02/06/2009 13:00

Wow, timmette - you really must've been all baby!!

Yes - hehe. Gained a ton of weight after I had him however - pure laziness had just decided to rectify it and we are now expecting dc2 .

littleducks · 02/06/2009 13:11

had this in both pregnanvies and nothing wrong with babies, the measuring isnt really that accurate with a tap e measure, they send you for peace of mind an 'just in case'

try to think of it as another chance to see baby (i was very calm in second preg but worriede in first)

lljkk · 02/06/2009 13:17

I had this in my 4th pregnancy. They did loads of checks on the fetus's vital organs, and blood flow thru the cord and the placenta, plus measurements of the leg and head, etc. Baby was fine, I knew he couldn't be that active and be having any problems. It was easy for me to be relaxed because I had been pregnant so often before. I think I was measuring ~4cm small for dates at the time.

He was born 11days past EDD and almost 9 lbs.

notyummy · 02/06/2009 13:22

Happened to me too at about the 8 months stage - I was 4 or 5cm under. Went for a scan - to find out baby was actually bigger than average! I am tall and have good ab muscles (shame about my arse...) so the docs reckoned that was the cause.

dd born bang on time at nearly 9 lbs.....

ksld · 02/06/2009 13:26

Happened to me too at 36 weeks - had to wait 2 days for a scan and spent most of that time in tears worried for the baby. It is horrid to think there is anything wrong with them so I feel for your sister.
The scan said Baby was small too - the scanner said would be 6lbs ish when born, so small but fine.
DS1 arrived 13 days late weighing 8lbs 8 oz!

Madmentalbint · 02/06/2009 13:36

happened to my sis last week - all well and babe a good size

Tamarto · 02/06/2009 13:38

Me with my first, he came out weighing 10lb 2oz

NorkyButNice · 02/06/2009 13:45

I was sent for a scan as I was measuring small at 34 weeks - the sonographer checked my notes and said "Are you sure they said you're measuring SMALL?" - she predicted that DS was going to be a 10lber!

He actually came out at 8lb 13oz. All babies lie differently in the womb, so hopefully your sis has nothing to worry about.

DentArthurDent · 02/06/2009 14:22

Between 12 weeks and term I gained 11lbs in my third pregnancy. Dd3 was 7lb 15oz.
My first pregnancy I had to have growth scans as my bump measured consistently 3-4 cms less than dates. Turned out Dd1 was just going to be a small baby. I was told that she did not have enough water round her and I had to be induced. When I got to the stage that my waters were broken there were floods of water and the midwife commented on the amount being much more than expected. Dd1 was 5lb 12oz. I am sure everything will be fine
