My sister (8 months pregnant) has to have a scan tomorrow because the midwife thinks she is too small. Has anyone else had this happen?

She is tiny considering she only has a month left and has only put on a stone so far, but they have said she isn't carrying much water & the baby seems very active. She is a small frame anyway & was only a size 8 before getting pregnant.

She has just text to say the midwife has booked her in for a scan tomorrow because she is 2.5cm under what she should be. My sister is a little worried now.

My cousin got sent in for a scan because she was very small - it turned out that her placenta was not in great condition (she was 35/36 wks) and they decided to have the baby out by csection the next day. Baby was born last week, she was only 3 pounds 1 because she hadn't been putting on weight, but she is absolutely perfect and doing brilliantly so try not to worry. She has to spend a little bit of time in SCBU, but they are very pleased with her. Even if baby has to come out at 36wks (mine had to at 37wks), their lungs can be in great condition by that stage even if they have not put on lots of weight.

I'm 5'10 and was a size 8 pre-preg. Was virtually concave-bellied at 20 weeks and wasn't visibly pregnant until about 32 weeks. Even at full term I really on looked like I was about 25/26 weeks. My son was 9lbs 8.5oz at birth and less than a centimetre off two foot long.

Like your sister, I wasn't carrying vast amounts of water and got regular bollockings from the midwife about not putting weight on - I was bloody stuffing myself with food!

There's nothing that suggests for certain that there's anything wrong with your sister or her baby. Also, as mentioned, she is far gone enough now for the baby's lung capacity to be suitably advanced that he or she wouldn't be in dnager in that respect, being born at this stage.

I hope they're both all right.

DD1 - measured 33/34 cms at 39 weeks, so induced - 7lbs 1.5 oz.

DD2 - no growth in 2 weeks seen on scan, so induced at 35+4 - 5lbs 6oz (very respectable for gestation)

DD3 - reduced movements, measuring small, scan predicted 6lb 3oz, so induced - 7lbs 9oz.

Pinkchampagne · 02/06/2009 17:38

Agree it is best to get it checked out. She is very small considering she only has a month to go but she is a small frame. I have told her to text me after the scan tomorrow.

I had this with dd1, apparently I had ketones in my urine which is when your body starts eating itself to get the fat it needs. Who knows why, as I was a fairly normal size 10/12 before pg and ate normally during pg too - anyway, I spent a happy last eight weeks stuffing my face with doughnuts as suggested by the mw!

Anyway dd1 came out at 5lbs 20z which is small (2 weeks early though) but not shockingly so. So long as the baby is growing in a normal curve it shouldn't be a problem. Wish your friend luck

Yes - happened to someone at work, his wife was sent for a scan at 38 weeks, which we all thought was quite odd (the midwife wouldn't say why). Baby was absolutely fine and weighed nearly 8lb at birth!

Pinkchampagne · 03/06/2009 14:55

Well she has had the scan & all looks fine with the baby. They say she isn't carrying much water but don't seem too concerned, and baby is estimated to weigh around 5.5 pounds atm.

Not sure - I only got a text from her after work. She said they don't seem too concerned.

Apparently her water is within limits, just on the low side. Hopefully that means she doesn't have too much to worry about.
I have been more anxious through her pregnancy than I was with my own!!

I was sent for a growth scan today as was measuring 30.5cm at 34 weeks. Turns out baby is bigger than average and already weighs 5lb 6oz!

I'm not sure the whole measuring tape thing really works....

tt2009 · 26/06/2009 17:50

im 8 months gone and if you saw the size of me you would thnk im 4/5months.. up until now everything has been fine, but yestoday my midwife said im measuring too small so she has arranged a growth scan for me next week.. i dont really know wat to think

claireybee · 26/06/2009 17:54

Yep I had fortnightly scans because I was measuring small with ds and never got above 34cm. The scans the week he was due showed he was probably under 5lb so they wanted to induce me but I persuaded them to let me go to due date.

He came on his due date and was actually 7lb so the scan was completely wrong (there is no way he put on 2lb in 4 days!)

naturelover · 27/06/2009 08:01

I was measuring "small for dates" according to my midwife and her tape measure when I was pregnant with DD. She has 8lb 8oz at birth! I'm quite tall and maybe the baby just had lots of space between my hips....

Uspy · 28/06/2009 16:36

Yes, happened to me at 37 weeks. Most of the time it is nothing to worry about scan revealed nothing wrong with baby's size.I had a small bump with my first too and it may just be the way she carries, baby lies etc. Best not to worry I know I did but it was for nothing then again it is best to check but it probably is nothing to worry about

bronze · 28/06/2009 16:51

Happened to me this last time. My cons. measured me decided he was too small. Scanned me and said average. He wa\s 7lb 14 so fine

lisad123 · 28/06/2009 16:54

I had this with both my dd1s. DD1 had very little water and both thimes placental failure, dd1 was ECS weight 5lb at term and dd2 was 5lb 3oz.

YummyMummy17 · 01/07/2009 18:34

I have just been for a growth scan today ! My bump was measuring 32weeks when im ment to be 36 So i have had the scan, and the midwife (whom is not my usual midwife) sayed thanks and rushed us out the room, so i am in two minds of if my baby is actually okay, she never explained anything to me !

Does this mean he will be okay? I feel so clueless now

Hope everything goes okay for you ! Make-sure you ask as many questions when you can !

xx

Grammaticus · 01/07/2009 18:37

Haven't read thread.

It happened to me - I am 5'7" and slim, had only really put on the bump and the midwife thought it seemed a bit low for my dates. After the scan they said "Well you are quite tall aren't you". As if they had only just noticed. All was fine.

Northernlurker · 01/07/2009 18:40

Yummymummy - as a general rule leaving your appointment unsure of what's going on usually means that everything looks fine. Were there any problem with the baby or the amount of fluid the midwife's first action would be to get a doctor in to take a look at you. The whole measuring thing is only an average guide and if baby is moving well and the scan reveals no problems then likely you are both fine. Why don't you ring your own midwife team tomorrow and get them to confirm that just to put your mind at rest.

we are all differnt shapes and our babies come out at differnt weights for different gestations etc and then grow at different rates so why we should expect all our bumps to be the same size I don't know!

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 01/07/2009 18:47

Glad they aren't worried, my friend had this too she was a size 8 tiny framed and it turned out the reason they reckoned she was measuring small (her dd was 7lb 12oz) was that she had brilliant stomach muscles. Didn;t wuite work out the same for her next baby though as everything had already been stretched once and she didn't do as much exercise so ended up looking the size of a small country and her this one was 6lb.
