Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Tamlin · 22/05/2009 14:24

Just had Hospital A (the horrible place where I had DS) ring me and say disapprovingly 'We've just had a request come through for your anomaly scan. Are you giving birth here?'

Me: 'I don't know yet. I haven't had a chance to tour Hospital B yet.'

Hospital A: 'Well, we need to know if you're going to be giving birth here. You're seventeen weeks, you know.'

Me: 'I don't know. Have not seen Hospital B.'

Hospital A: 'Well, you need to choose.'

Me: 'I thought that I had a right to choose where I wanted to give birth and I could exercise that right up until the end of my pregnancy?'

Hospital A: 'It's very bad policy to be switching hospitals at the last minute, due to continuity of care.'

Good old Hospital A! You were understaffed and neglectful during my first labour, gave me a lovely postpartum infection, and then had to repair the damage done by your lovely consultant in your surgery wing nine months later. How I've enjoyed that continuity of care. Grrr.

ashleighbeee · 22/05/2009 14:41

Tamlin How disgusting - I am assuming that if Hospital B has even just a friendlier 'receptionist' you'll be jumping at the oppurtunity to go there!!!

Continuity of care.. in order for them to continue the care, surely they have to 'care'/give a monkeys in the first place!!!!

(dont suppose they gave you a date for the anomoly scan whilst on the phone??)

xx

Tamlin · 22/05/2009 14:47

No, no date. Sigh. The thing is, if I have to get hold of my midwife again in order to get a referral to Hospital B, I won't be able to reach her until 9 til 9.30 am on Tuesday. So if it takes another couple weeks for the referral letter to be written and get to Hospital B, then I'm going to be nineteen weeks, and would anyone like to hazard a guess at my chances of getting an appointment at a week's notice?

Out of interest, does anyone know the official guidelines re. when the anomaly scan should take place? I saw them referenced in another thread, but I can't find them, and I think it might be handy to be able to cite them. I don't want a scan at 23 weeks because if the worst happens, that doesn't give us much time to get a second opinion...

ashleighbeee · 22/05/2009 14:53

I think its 18-22 weeks.. although I am not certain - I just remember when we went for our scans at the private clinic that is the guideline that they use on the notice boards.

I do see the predicament you're in with Hospital B, hopefully Hospital A will get you in for a scan (now that you KNOW they have the referral) and then it wont be too time sensitive for the referral to Hospital B.

that you have been through such a rubbish time with Hospital A though, I wish ALL hospitals provided the same level of care!!

sydneysuze · 22/05/2009 15:31

Oh Tamlin how completely rubbish of Hospital A**e Sounds more like Continuity of Scare to me....

However, at least don't worry about the 24 week time limit - if, god forbid, a serious anomaly is found, there is in fact no time limit on 2nd opinions, operations or anything like that. I'm not surprised you don't want to have anything to do with that hospital. I'd be tempted to pick the other one just on the basis of 'it has to be better than that....!'

Lola so sorry to hear you've had a scare but how lovely to get another peek at your baby girl!!! It is awful though isn't it when you recongnize the dreaded scan rooms or have the same sonographers from bad times past? Really feel for you with that. I had the most amazing team of doctors from Kings College Hospital (the ones who were on TV last night ....) helping me when my little boy was diagnosed, and yet I can't bear ever to go back there. Luckily my consultant here completely understands so they sent me to St Georges for all the cardiac tests instead.

Reading through these posts it's really clear that some areas get a whole different standard of care from others and I just don't think that's right at all . We all contribute the same to the NHS, we all need treating with respect, courtesy and goddamn professionalism. [rant emoticon]

Good luck cece!

to everyone else - back later.

scarlotti · 22/05/2009 16:38

Tamlin poor you, and am not surprised you don't want to go to hospital A. If I were you, I'd use them for the anomoly scan and then if you opt for hospital B on the way out of the scan room so be it. I think they come up with this sort of behaviour to avoid the paperwork - what would happen if you moved area whilst pregnant, they'd have to transfer notes then ... or are they doing to stop pregnant women freely moving around the country now

Tamlin · 22/05/2009 17:09

I don't know if you guys have seen the Times today, but apparently there's a 36 year high in the birth rate without a corresponding increase in staffing. 36 YEARS?! Seriously?

scarlotti · 22/05/2009 19:00

Heavens, so we'll be delivering our own babies in the corridors then

mummytopebs · 22/05/2009 21:34

Hi ladies a bit down in the dumps tonight, have got really low backache which is how my 2 mc started - so i am now worried sick x Any hope? Also full of cold and dd is still awake arrrrrrrrrgh

sydneysuze · 22/05/2009 22:33

Hi Pebs fingers all crossed for you tonight. You too Liskey if you're still spotting.

Lots of us have been through similar angst ridden early days - lower back pain could be tension too. With me it was brown spotting. I've had two early mcs, and both of them started with brown spotting and cramps, so when I had that 5 weeks into this one I was distraught and convinced the same thing was happening again. I'll be 23+4 weeks up the duff tomorrow. Really hoping for a similar result for you guys.

Eek Tamlin I read that article after you posted - and my neighbour had a baby last week at our local hospital, TWENTY babies born the same night. And I'm a Christmas conceiver so bound to be super busy when I'm due anyway! Right, definitely time for extra yoga and active birth classes for me

Hope all's well in Knicker Checker Land with you all tonight. Me, the dawg and Little Syd just hanging out watching old Hugh Jackman movies - well, seeing as DH is away with the eskimos I figured I deserved a little treat

sydneysuze · 22/05/2009 22:35

PS Lola thanks for the painting offer and the (((((((hugs)))))))))). Right back at you missus

blondieminx · 22/05/2009 23:50

Evening all

Just popping in for a quick catch up.

Tamlin ditto to what SydneySuze said, bratty hospital receptionist does seem to be doling out continuity of scare Good for you for sticking to your guns! In case it's handy, the NHS CKS (Clinical Knowledge Summaries) site says it should usually be done at 18-20 weeks (see below for link). Does the MW have to give you a referral to Hospital B - could you maybe just give them a quick call and say you'd like to take a look round if poss and ask how soon you can do that? Hopefully they'll be much more helpful and you can then get everything transferred over.

In case it's helpful everyone here is the NHSGuidetoantenatalscreening so we know what should be done when!

SydneySuze sounds like a lovely cosy evening in. Hope those narwhals turn up quick for their moment on camera and that hubby's home sooner rather than later - in the meantime I guess make the most of having exactly what you want for tea, sprawling in the middle of the bed and watching whatever YOU want on tv

Ashleighbee and Scarlotti it's really helpful to read your posts about breastfeeding and stuff, it's answered a whole bunch of q's I'd probably have had in about 10 weeks time!

Mummytopebs and Gently hope you are resting up and taking care of yourselves this weekend.

Liskey hope the bloods went fine for you.

Ciara we are - you're a couple of days further ahead than me - I'l be 7 weeks on Sunday. I can understand that after a mmc the thought of a scan must be scary but... you could well see a healthy lo. What's your gut feeling? This will be my first although I had a mc in March. Am still gobsmacked that I am pg tbh - took us 15 months to achieve the bfp in march cos of coming off the pill/thyroid-related complications and then we found out I was pg and started my mc all in the same day ...We were supposed to be waiting to try till next month but it seems mother nature had other ideas!

Interview went brilliantly and I actually really want the job but the new employer's mat leave package is nowhere near as good as current employers. Chelsea was great, got some great photos including of Alan & Joe!

Oh, if anyone wants that Times story it's here

mummytopebs · 23/05/2009 13:39

Hi all the back ache has passed thank goodness. Have been having some waves of nausea today so that gives me a bit of confidence - it likes a rollercoaster already, just want to be further on.

How did the blood tests go liskey?

flappybitsoskin · 23/05/2009 17:09

hi all

am back - had luvverley few days. Cept for the fact my ds knackered his leg on a slide and couldn't walk. After yonks in hossie found out at least it wasn't broken but still had to carry the 19 mo fatboy everywhere for rest of the week (my older dc has no mobility at all as well)

this prob caused me next mare - what started with cramps ended up as excruciated stabbing pains down side of my stomach. After a couple of days of this I went to A and E on docs advice. All ok - nowt to do with pg. Most likely that I've sprained my hip due to lugging around my nippers.

Doc asked if it was my first pg. Felt v strange saying it was my 6th

Am feeling sick as a dog who's been ravaging bins today. Good sign I reckon - 3bean letting me know he's getting comfy. I chundered on some carrots that had barely gone down and had to vomit in me hands running away from dinner table! Sorry ladies - rather vile of me to share that

Sorry this is all a bit me me me but will be back in a bit after feeding the kids

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 23/05/2009 17:57

Phew! Found you!

Hello everybody

All is well here. Can't believe DD ( still makes me smile to type that) is 2 weeks already, it seems like she's been here a lifetime (and in a very literal sense 2 weeks is a lifetime for her).

All is going well. Had a few teary moments here and there. H has been really helpful on the whole (apart from a few wobbles here and there) which is a huge relief. We even kissed yesterday! And that hasn't happened in over 2 months

Haven't had a chance to do more than skim through - but I will return!

tattifer Thanks, looks like a good date to be born then Hope to see you back here very soon.

Hope all is well out there.

flappybitsoskin · 23/05/2009 20:57

glad its going well, crunch

pebs - wanted to say before thatI get back ache with pg - regardless how it pans out. Have always put it down to stretchy ligament stuff

scarlotti · 24/05/2009 08:08

Morning ladies

Hope everyone is doing well today.

mummytopebs hope you're feeling more positive today. Liskey hope the spotting has stopped.
flappy hope you're taking more care now carrying around your toddlers! Don't go doing yourself any injuries.

Crunch how lovely to hear from you and so please Polly is doing so well. Am so pleased things seem to be more positive with your H, one day at a time but I really do hope things improve for you both now. How are you finding it with 3 - is it much more hectic than 2?

bllondieminx good to see you. What have you decided about the job - sounds great that you like it so much. In terms of the maternity package though - you have to have been employed by them from before you concieved to get any smp so it might be worth checking that out before making a decision. You can find the rules on the directgov site.

Sydney hope you're not missing DH too much and enjoying the time doing things that you don't when he's around.

As for me, things are pretty good. Had my quad test on Friday so have the results of that to come in the post soon - there's another thing to linger in the back of my mind now! Been feeling a bit tired again (sigh, thought that had passed) although it's not helped by ds waking up earlier and earlier - 5:30 yesterday! Luckily he stayed in bed until 7 today but am still going to have to go back for a nap at some point

Hope everyone else is feeling a bit more energetic!

mummytopebs · 24/05/2009 09:05

Hi Scarlotti do you know much about maternity pay cos i am in a bit of a pickle. I work for the council on a casual contract but have just got a job still with the council in a different department, i havent started the new job yet cos am waiting for a police check to come back. Do you think i will be entitled to maternity pay as it should be classed as continous employment (only in a different department), feel a bit cheeky starting a new job and then going off on maternity but hey ho cant be helped x

I am feeling a bit more positive today just got all fingers and toes crossed and worrying cos i havent got many pregnancy symptoms (well not like i did with dd)

scarlotti · 24/05/2009 10:04

Hi mummytopebs if you're working for the same employer then it's continuous employment. The only thing that might change the situation is that you say you're on a casual contract - is that a temp contract? Are you directly employed by the council?

The key points for maternity pay is that you have to have been continuously employed for a set period (I forget exactly what but it's about 26 weeks) for the period before you are 25 weeks pregnant, and that the employer has been responsible for paying your class 1 NIC's.
You can check the exact details on the govt website, just google SMP and it will come up. You can fill in the SMP calculator and it will tell you what you're entitled to - it will tell you the amounts too.

Hope that helps

HappyBump · 24/05/2009 10:18

hello
I just reposted the list . hopefully it is up to date - I was getting confused.

I had a MMC at the end of March at 13 weeks. It was our second mc, the first was in Jan 2007 prior to having DS in Dec 2007.

We've literally just found out we are pregnant again so we are going through all the emotions of excitment and terror and wanting to be as positive as possible. Early days for us.

It's lovely to see so many graduates.

HerNameWasLola · 24/05/2009 12:00

Morning ladies

Just a quick post, wanted to say to Sydney & Ashleigh that I'm thinking of you and your LOs today. Hope you're managing to enjoy some sunshine wherever you are, and that your beans are keeping you company and generally reassuring you of the FANTASTIC times to come!

Some friends of our had this quotation printed inside the front cover of their order of service when they got married, I always think of it at times like this...

"Come along with me. The best is yet to be"

Bit of a random thought, but it seemed appropriate to mention it somehow... Ours was:

"If I know what love is, it is because of you"

Aawww. Having said that, there's been no snogging in this house for a while Crunch, you lucky girl!! SOOO lovely to hear from you btw!

Have just placed a JoJo Maman Bebe order as they have a 20% off discount if you spend over £120 (scarily easy...) which expires tomorrow. If anyone wants it, it's MTF91 Happy shopping ladies!

Hope to have time for a proper catch up soon, but wanted to let you all know that even if I'm not posting much you're all often in my thoughts

PS Big congrats to HappyBump! Glad you've found us

Liskey · 24/05/2009 20:42

Hi Ladies

Hope your all ok. Had the blood test ok on Friday - Nurse said ther was no need to panic it was merely to confirm the pregnancy? Didn't have it done before with my first pregnancy but she said it was perfectly normal.

So now I can continue panicing about the chance of another mmc. I haven't really been spotting - not like last time - just a light brown discharge no blood this time. So I'm hopefull this won't mean another mc.

mummytopebs · 24/05/2009 21:48

Liskey i am glad the blood test went ok and there has been no blood x How far along did you say you were?

I have been getting concerned cos havent got many pregnancy symptoms. Got myself one of them clear blue digital things today tells you how far on you are by measuring your hcg and it said what i thought it was so that has gave me a bit of confidence as in both my mc last year my hcg levels were really low.

Liskey · 24/05/2009 21:51

I'm 6 weeks yesterday.

I'm not having many pregnancy symptons either (apart from really tender breasts) - no sickness or anything.

I did exactly the same as you last week got a clearblue on Monday with EMU and it said I was 3 weeks + exactly what I should be.

When I saw the nurse on Friday she laughed at having no symptons and said not to worry about that - might turn up later or not at all.
