Today I have mostly been ... drinking the firey vinegar from a jar of jalapenos.. .

It's the vinegary, chili rush as it goes down my throat. I keep nipping out to the kitchen for a quick sip. I now have tummy ache and I know I'm going to suffer when it 'leave the building' so to speak. .

Anyone else with me on this vile craving?

When I was pregnant with dd I was obsessed with rollmop herrings and used to down the vinegar afterwards

Amapoleon · 05/05/2009 22:44

Hahaha! My eating of Chocolate digestives with mature cheddar on the top seemed mild compared to this.

My Mum used to chew leather when she was preggers with me.

TrinityIsLovingHerLittleRhino · 05/05/2009 22:49

oh my god chocolate digestives with cheese on sounds gorgeous, why haven't I tried that

and I'm not pregnant

FrankMustard · 05/05/2009 22:49

With ds 1 I couldn't stop eating tinned pineapple on every meal I ate, with ds3 it was Mrs Elwood's pickled cucumbers in everything and with ds4 I liked to lick the soles of dcs' plimsolls!

Comewhinewithme · 05/05/2009 22:49

Don't worry about it I have been smelling nail varnish like an old meths drinker for the past two months .

Amapoleon · 05/05/2009 22:51

I could still eat chocolate digestives with cheese on now

It is rather scrumptious!

Thinking about it, I also craved olives and jalapeños and was fortunate to find olives stuffed with them.

Comewhinewithme · 05/05/2009 22:52

Someone on another thread admitted to eating loo roll everyday !

nevergoogledragonbutter · 05/05/2009 22:58

don't take recipe advice from trinity!

TrinityIsLovingHerLittleRhino · 05/05/2009 22:59

you have no taste dragonbutter

jstock · 06/05/2009 10:51

I have a thing for new car smell! I can't get enough. Think I may get barred from halfords soon. Also if I didn't have a sausage roll daily in my first trimester the world would have stopped turning( it was worth the heartburn!!)

olivo · 06/05/2009 10:58

arm bands, lilos and other inflatables for me - delicious smell. havent yet started eating them.....

not sure i can join you on the fiery vinegar though!

YanknCock · 06/05/2009 11:02

I'm not drinking the water, but with you on the jalepenos! I keep wanting them even though they do nasty things to me (which they didn't do before).

And I can't moan about it to DH because he always says 'you KNEW you'd feel rotten!' and sings 'Ring of Fire' at me

nickschick · 06/05/2009 11:06

When I had ds1 (years ago) I won a hamper- included in it was a huge jar of gherkins- Dh was working as a bouncer and whilst he was at work I ate the lot I drank the vinegar and spooned the crunchy bits out of the bottom - dh came home to find me writhing around the floor in absolute agony-stop right now!!!! you will suffer dreadfully

lol@ring of fire

olivo · 06/05/2009 11:06

pmsl at "ring of fire" !!!

Kingsroadie · 06/05/2009 11:31

I too am addicted to gherkins, pickled onions, pickled beetroot and anything soaked in vinegar really (although I draw the line at pickled eggs). Had some jalepenos last night and ate lots.

However, I normally am able to eat absolutely loads of spicy food and really hot too. When pregnant it seem that I get heartburn immediately.
Particularly in the case of jalepenos eaten with nothing else in my stomach. Gross! So yes, I can quite see myself drinking the firey vinegar very soon! My husband thinks I am hilarious ( first preg, 10 weeks)

YanknCock · 06/05/2009 13:38

'I fell in to a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
and the flames went higher.
And it burns, burns, burns
the ring of fire
the ring of fire.'

Hopefully the neighbours can't hear me screeching 'owwwww...my arse!' with DH singing the above back at me....

Oh he thinks he's funny, he does....

Git.

MrsHappy · 06/05/2009 13:46

Eurgh. I am craving spicy food but it does at least have to have nutritional value!

Might you be anaemic? Maybe try upping your iron intake and see if that gets rid of the craving?

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 06/05/2009 21:34

well weirdly, my body seems to have 'processed' the fire water quite well with no side-effects. Might well indulge again tonight.

brightonbleach · 07/05/2009 12:10

its not anaemia, its (apparently!) a need for extra salt/sodium in the blood to push all the good stuff through you to the baby - you need more salt than normal (again, apparently) & the pickling vinegar & the pickled items provide it for you... how do I know you ask?? Well, I asked my obs last week after I found myself drinking all the vinegar from the pickled onion jar, then eating gherkins (and again, drinking the vinegar) & half a jar of pickled beetroot & chillies - gah. Apparently this is quite normal, especially if you eat quite healthily normally (i.e., no processed foods that have a lot of salt in them - I don't eat any ready meals or pre-packaged thingys, lots of fresh fruit and veg and chicken and fish, not an angel, eat plenty of choccies & cakes sometimes as well! but they're not salt-infused) - he said they wouldn't normally recommended eating extra salt but in pregnancy you do need a little extra which is why craving pickles is quite a common craving!

I also found myself eating salt and vinegar crisps with chocolate sauce poured on them last week...DH's face was a picture when he walked in! hope I don't want that again

Am only 14+4 !!

hope this helps...

Kingsroadie · 07/05/2009 12:30

Ooh thanks - that explains it! I had quite a few more pickled items last night... However, although I eat fairly healthily, and don't eat any ready meals etc I do generally add quite a lot of salt to food - oops. Maybe I need even more. I def want to eat ALL the salt and vinegar crisps (particularly McCoys as they have loads of fake flavour on the,) - but again - this was something I did pre-pregnancy anyway.

phdlife · 07/05/2009 12:35

you lot are making my ds1 craving for brussels sprouts seem quite reasonable by comparison

brightonbleach · 07/05/2009 13:56

kingsroadie I said that to my obs, I do add a fair bit of table salt to meals generally but he said but a certain amount of salt is healthy, even necessary & if you don't eat 'packaged' foods we're likely to be under the recommended max of daily sodium, which is really good - but does mean your body will make you eat pickled things in pregnancy just to get that touch more when it needs it!! mmmmmmmmmmm salt & vinegar mccoys mmmmmmmmm

Kingsroadie · 07/05/2009 14:27

Ah - thanks a lot Brightonbleach. I just always assumed that I ate far too much salt - everyone always berated me for putting "far too much" on my food. Clearly they don't know what they're talking about

I want salt & vinegar McCoys NOW!

alana39 · 07/05/2009 14:30

thanks for the explanatino brightonbleach - that makes me feel a bit better about eating spoonfuls of marmite and lime & chilli chutney straight from the jar. and not bothering to drain the pickled red cabbage which I haven't eaten since I was 10. Now feeling normal having read this thread.

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 07/05/2009 14:32

Can someone explain to me why I would need to eat the bubbles in my bubble bath then? I can't for the life of me work out what nutritional value I get from them

It was pickled onions with ds2 - loved the added bonus of no one coming near me all afternoon at work, which meant I never got landed with anything extra to do
