ta for the link Iris. I wish they'd explain HOW a fruit with a pH of 2.3 can alkalise the stomach, though. Maybe I'll give it a whirl despite its contra-intuitiveness (to me!).

Daisy I've had occasional bouts of lower right abdominal pain for over 20 yrs and suggestions from docs include grumbling appendix, constipation, ovary problems, kidney problems and rough sex 9 chance would be a fine thing). Last time it was v bad - pre-pregnancy - I had a scan which did show bleeding in the ovary, which is probably to do with my endometriosis. Do you have endo or cysts or anything like that? I also had a similar pain a few weeks ago and it turned out I had a UTI and needed some antibiotics which worked v quickly - so worth checking for protein in your urine. Good that the scan showed up well though!

peachyfox · 23/04/2009 14:29

Hello everyone,

I just got back from my scan and all is well. I must have been a very irritating patient because I couldn't help asking him about five times if everything was OK when he was clearly in the middle of the scan, which DP thought was very funny. The baby wasn't exactly making love to the camera though, it had its little hands over its face all the time! But still so beautiful - I'm in love!

We celebrated with a sushi binge. Not quite sure if that's allowed but it's always been my favourite food and I have a stomach made of cast iron so I guessed it would be OK. it was superfresh and delicious - best thing I've eaten in a long time.

Tee ouch at the baby kicks. I haven't had heartburn yet but I know many do so perhaps it awaits me.

Great tip about the vaseline on the nose - I had terrible hay fever and haven't dared take anything for it this year.

Tee2072 · 23/04/2009 14:39

peachy that's great to hear! I love the fact that I see my baby every 2 weeks!! Gotta have some advantage to having diabetes!

OP posts:
peachyfox · 23/04/2009 14:41

Thanks Tee! DP bought the baby a huge slice of cherry cheesecake on the way home as a present. I'm just wading my way through it now, what a chore!

iris66 · 23/04/2009 15:15

I do apologise ermintrude I was always told that oranges were acidic However, according to the list I linked to, they are clearly not I know they don't work in the same way as lemon though {iris sidles off hoping nobody thinks that she was talking out of her backside...}

iris66 · 23/04/2009 15:23

peachy - great news about the scan

Tee the scans are the one thing I'm really missing this pg

Tee2072 · 23/04/2009 20:43

Everyone must be very busy today!

iris some days I wish I wasn't diabetic, and then they scan me again.

johnworf · 23/04/2009 20:49

Evening all. Quiet on here today. Must be JJ's absence

Have cancelled tonight's meet up with my ex colleague/ex b/f due to teething child stopping play. Couldn't leave her while she was screaming the place down She's ok now and had a nice spoonful of calpol which she loves - fabulous. I was so frazzled by it all I had to have some chocolate. K helped me with it. Actually she nabbed a piece out of my hand.

Which leads me nicely onto a subject we've had hot debates regarding in the past; BLW. Now, I'm not a fan but after talking to floria y'day it seems that K has been doing it without me being consiously aware I've been doing it. Of course, she's not fully into BLW as I still give her the mashed up food that she has for each meal but, she is taking food out of my hands (out of my mouth if she could) and feeding herself. Bananas, biscuits, rusks, organic baby biccies, toast...she's going great guns. I'm going to get the baby net device out tomorrow and see if it helps. I've also started her on a cup now as she's really cut down on her milk.

Talking of milk, has anyone else with a LO had them almost abandon milk around 7 months? She likes her bottle in the morning but for the rest of the day she isn't bothered and has juice (hence the introduction of the cup). Is this normal? I can't remember what my older 3 did.

mrsboogie · 23/04/2009 21:39

evenin' all

Yes, I have been very busy - under pressure at work very muchly (it didn't take long did it? ) I even had to take some work home with me although I haven't got round to actually doing it yet.

It's hard to know re D and milk jw - yesterday at nursery he refused two or three bottles and ate only their food - but at home he wants only milk and refuses solids except fruity purées which he loves.

He has no interest in food though - wouldn't want to take anything out of your hand or that. You'd think he was eating pie and chips on a daily basis from the size and weight of him.

My only objection to the BLWing (aside from the choking) is that they insist there must be no purees, which is silly IMO.

Welcome back from hols hedgepig

good news on the scan peachy happy scans are great!

chocolate JW?? I'm practically vegan at the moment!

johnworf · 23/04/2009 22:23

mrsb I had to have some life saving chocolate! Would have throttled someone (DH was a likely candidate) otherwise. It's the first time in a long time though.

K's the opposite to D foodwise; she troughs like there's no tomorrow but is a delicate little thing. K is off the purees now and has moved up to lumps. She's having a main course and pudding - but only at lunchtime. Normal breakfast and a single serving at teatime. Couple of snacks in between. Btw I have to watch her like a hawk when she's got solid things in her hand otherwise I fear she could choke.

Sorry to hear that work is a bummer. Still, another bank hol coming your way soon mrsb Woot!

mrsboogie · 23/04/2009 23:06

I think I have managed for now to keep my mind off yummy things so I don't crave or want anything except roast potatoes (which are easy to avoid) and cake (which is not)

How much would K have in a typical serving jw? D will only eat a few spoonfuls of savoury stuff (unless its the nursery's food) and the same with porridge but he eats lots of fruit.

iris66 · 24/04/2009 08:40

Good morning all I'm so glad it wasn't my inane witterings that kept everyone away yesterday then I (unusually) had my laptop on in the kitchen all day.

mrsb - have you been back at work long? (I used to be a CS too up until 6 years ago - almost wish I'd stayed in and got the 3 lots of mat leave now!! - or maybe not )

jw a friend's baby decided to stop bf on weaning (about 6mths) and refused milk too. I suppose as long as they're getting the calcium from another source (greens/dairy), and the extra fluids, it's not a big deal.

Will be on "op houseclean" today as my mum's coming to visit for a week. Got to dash (ie waddle quickly!)to the supermarket first though as we've absolutely nothing in eek! [note to self... arrange for the nice Mr Tesco to deliver next time!] Have a good one all

Tee2072 · 24/04/2009 09:27

Good morning!

Can't figure out what to do with my day off. Part of me wants to lie here like this, part of me wants to go shopping.

Anyone want to decide for me?

OP posts:
johnworf · 24/04/2009 09:34

mrsb K has, in a typical serving, half of one of the large HIPP jars plus, if she's in the mood for it, half of one of the regular jars of yoghurt/fruit dessert. She'll also have rusks to eat herself or a half piece of toast cut up. I think she's more of a savoury person like myself as she pulls a face usually with the first spoonful of dessert (think along the lines of a dog poo going in and it's that sort of face).

She's also gone from being the model baby at bedtimes to being possessed. I only have to mount the first stair and she starts wailing. That's because she's worked out what's coming. If I actually put her in the cot she screams until she is sick. What to do ladies? Any ideas welcome. I've tried allsorts and she has a firm routine beforehand. She's just wised up methinks

Off to drop the car at the garage and both myself and DH are going to walk back the 1.5 miles back with the dog and the pram. Good bit of exercise. I'm planning on getting the Wii out later as my neck is beginning to ease. Thank goodness.

mrsb I spent nigh on £100 on cake alone y'day at Slattery's for K's non-christening. One occasion cake (the one with the hand made flowers on it), a large cheesecake and a selection of small cakes. I really hope I'm going to be able to enjoy some of it! Btw, my 14's are feeling decidedly loose today so I'm hoping that size 12's might be just around the corner, certainly by the time we have this family party

jeanjeannie · 24/04/2009 09:42

Hello all - I'm back

Haven't had time to read everything - we came back late last night, so was pooped.

had a lovely time - mum was thrilled with cake and flowers. She just adored seeing the girls really and the weather was gorgeous, so Iris was in the garden until it got dark!

jw huzzah - first tooth tee hee AND realising bed time is not fun....little minx No top tips as we're now getting this How fab - spending all that money on CAKE! CAKE. CAKE! Mmmm that sounds good.

Don't know what I've eaten (i suspect white bread at parent's house) but I'm bloated like a football, have wind and constipated to boot - nasty.

tee Sleep AND shop!

iris I shall join you in 'operation household chores'

mrsB @ wieghtloss...woah!

peachy wonderful news that the scan was all fine and dandy

Right - must dash as i've a mountain of stuff to plough through while Iris is a nursery. You can all get back to talking Ten-to-the-dozen now I'm back....or is it just me that chat then.... runs off suspecting that jw* is right!!

ermintrude13 · 24/04/2009 09:50

Welcome back JJ you certainly chose the right weekend to come to Nottingham, it's been absolutely gorgeous . I always get constipated after staying at my parents' house, mum cooks everything with cream in it, loads of lovely meat and always at least one pudding, and doesn't know what portion control means. It becomes a bit of a duty to eat everything even though it's delicious. A day of vegetable soup and a bit of fruit usually sorts me out.

JW I can't believe you're talking about getting down another dress size in the same para as buying a billion cakes. Willpower indeed! Sorry to hear bedtimes are becoming a battle. No top tips - as you say, baby K is realising that going upstairs means no more fun, and so it probably means a few days/weeks of being firm but fair while she yells pitifully . It will be 'just a phase', hopefully not like my DS's 'phase' of waking at 5.10am every single morning between the ages of 2 and 4.5

Iris will your ma be running her fingers along your shelving to check for dust? Could you not play the pregnant lady card and get her to do all your cleaning? If she's staying for a week she should earn her keep

peachy glad the scan was good, and hope the cheesecake was too

Tee, lying about or baby clothes shopping, what a nice dilemma. Maybe a bit of both?

Sadly, I have to get back to doing some work despite not feeling like it at all....

mrsboogie · 24/04/2009 09:56

omg jw you are doing so well, size 12, the Holy Grail!! this week has been my strictest week so far and I did a mid week weighing this morning and I am still the same as I was on Tuesday so I am disapointed - am I plateauing already? am I being silly?
Its hard finding time for exercise what with work and all the soup making...

haha sounds like K has figured out the whole bed thing, when D decides he's not for turning in we just bring him back down - we see so little of him in the week I don't mind having him banging about at 9pm. Not sure what to suggest - do you have any incentives like music or lightshows to keep her amused in bed? We have one of those Tomy star light things that sometimes keeps D occupied until he falls asleep. It's probably just another stage - hope its a short one!

iris I am on operation clean up too as my sister is coming for the weekend - will have to get done after work tonight. I went back to work when D was 5 months (couldn't afford to stay off any longer but would have loved to)We have a nursery on-site that he goes to and he's is at his grnadma's the other 2 so its a good set up. I do feel like we don't see much of him these days though, which is sad. No point grumbling though as there's no alternative!

tee why not do both? laze around for a while then go shopping!

Tee2072 · 24/04/2009 11:48

Okay, I did both! And bought some lovely clothes at Next for baby!

Speaking of which, mrsb I don't know if you are still looking for a hat for Mr D, but they have some cute boy ones at Next!!

And, how hard is it for my GPs office to note that I am pregnant and stop sending me letters to make an appointment for a smear?!?! I have called them every time I've gotten a letter. And yet, today, I got letter number 3! ARGH!

OP posts:
johnworf · 24/04/2009 13:24

tee if it's any consolation, I received a letter this morning reminding me I must have a smear. I looked at the postmark and it was sent the the day after I actually had my smear It's the system bunnies that do not know what happens outside of the screen in front of them (the screen saying only 'not had a smear').

JJ! You're back Sounds like you had a nice time. I can't eat white bread at all. I love the taste and the texture of it especially thick slices as toast but it plays havoc with my digestive system. I don't normally eat any bread - apart from pitta - these days. Sigh. Hope you get yourself sorted soon. Try some orange or prune juice.

No idea what's going on with my tum. Still taking the stuff from the GP to help. I even bought some yummy coffee for my cafetiere that isn't decaff - full strength stuff Not had it for years and I love it! I don't get the shakes either. Alas, it isn't helping in the botty dept though

mrsb I doubt you'll be plateauing after a couple of weeks. You've had a great weight loss though but just don't expect that amount to come off each week. Mine has settled into a 1-2lbs loss pretty much. My GP says this is perfectly fine and to avoid rebound weight gain, shouldn't aim to lose anymore.

Ah yes, cake!!!!! I'm hoping that I can at least have a bit of it seeing as it's cost a small fortune. I think I showed you a pic of the non-christeing cake but for those who missed it, here it is again. I plumped for the 8" (not the 8' as stated on the website!) And just in case this and a raspberry cheesecake that there's no pic of. I'm sooooo hoping that I'll be in a size 12 nice dress for the piccies though. That would be so fab. Sick of looking like a fat heifer on every family photo

iris meant to say, thanks for anecdote re your friend's baby and the milk. Glad it's not just K that won't have it. She loves her apple juice and water drink though so guess just give the girl what she wants.

Walked back from the garage with DH and LO and feel knackered now. Multitude of things wrong with old Dobby so think a big bill will be coming our way. I would like to get another, more economical car (we got the doblo for camping but won't be going for a couple of years). I think we'll change it next year though.

DD#1 rang this morning to tell me her day off has been disturbed by a note pushed through her door to notify her that her boiler burst and at 3.30am in the morning, water was pouring into the flat below and the flat below that. Landlady's b/f not available to look at it until 3pm today and in the meantime, she has no water as it's been turned off. What a palaver. She's running around panicing, apologising and all I could tell her was that the landlady is liable for all costs. She won't believe me though so in the meantime......."MUM......!"

johnworf · 24/04/2009 13:25

mrsb I meant to add, try and weigh yourself just once a week. So many things can make it look as though you've lost nothing and that can be disheartening, especially at the beginning

BonzoDoodah · 24/04/2009 15:03

jj Welcome back

Iris I've been suffering from horrendous heartburn for the last month or so. Seems even worse this week. The thought of drinking lemon juice on top of this makes me shreik. Lemon (and orange) is acidic and your stomach acid is acidic - I don't care how much alkaine it is supposed to produce as it is digested - it's never going to be enough to neutralise the stomach acid. I used to drink a spoon of bicarb of soda in water when I had no gaviscon in - it does neutralise the acid and calms my throat. Always felt slightly queezy afterwards - not surprised really with all the chemistry going on in my stomach ... but it did work.

And jw and mrs (?) ... BLW doesn't have "rules" ... it's basically about the baby eating what they want and can and not getting hung up about them having lumpy / solid stuff. I don't know why people get so ^anti^ BLW .... it makes perfect sense to me. And it's not exclusive to eating any other food. Well not in my books anyway. (as I say - I didn't have any choice ... M wouldn't eat any of the baby mushes except the organix fruit pots. And loved bread sticks, fresh banana chunks etc)

johnworf · 24/04/2009 15:42

bonzo I think the main problem mums have with BLW is the choking aspect. What I am against re BLW are the pontificating monsters on other threads that see it as the only way. I've had 4 children; 3 of which were fed as most of us on here were, mush out of a jar. Nothing happened and they all thrived Neither would I dream of dictating to anyone the best/right way of bringing up their children. It's a choice.

As for rules.....which part of parenting does have rules???

Tee2072 · 24/04/2009 15:44

Well, JW there is the rule that you can't just leave a bowl of food and one of milk on the floor and leave the baby to it. Like a cat.

OP posts:
mrsboogie · 24/04/2009 15:58

that's what I meant also - mush and puree is the work of the devil according to some of the threads on here, I suppose if you want the child to get hungry enough that it will learn to feed itself as much as it needs then giving it puree might interfere with that.

I have already had a nasty choking incident with D and a chip. Too scary. .

jeanjeannie · 24/04/2009 16:26

Phew - probably the wrong day to go for a 3 mile walk, avec pram...sans suncream Silly me. Lathered up Verity with 50+, popped on sun hat and put annoying sunshade on buggy (they realy are sh*t!) and forgot about me. yes, I now look like a sweaty rasberry about to have a heart attack Not a look I favour for the summer!

Oh that cake sure does look good jw

tee what is with this not being able to leave food out for a baby like you do a cat...? I think you'll find
you can Iris used to love it when she was little..... I think you'll find this is called 'EXtreeme BLW'....*ducks from social services..!!

Right - got eggs boiling on the cooker...been in there for ages...eek!
