6wks pg, shoulder, lower back and leg pain...

I am 6 wks pg. I have had some normal pg symptoms, excess tiredness, sickness, headaches, hunger! But I have some pains I am a bit about, reassurances/advice welcome please.

-Upper back/shoulder pain. Really sore tight muscles. Feels like I have been lifted heavy objects for a long time. DH went to give me a back rub and the muscles were agony to touch. Been like this for about 5 days? Along with this, the odd vague pain which feels it might be in lung region, tugging/stabbing pain (stabbing too strong, but slight version of that kind of pain?).

-More recently, lower back pain, on one side, occasionally winds me, odd pain shoots down my right leg into calf.

Pg related? something else? Just a mixture of ailments I would probably not notice if not pg?

Took some paracetamol earlier, but struggling to keep food down atm so not taken any for a while, not really helping anyway.

Don't know but wondering if these are some of the symptoms of a possible pulmonary oedema (sp?).

I think shoulder tip pain is a symptom. I think you should phone NHS 24 and your midwife.

PussinJimmyChoos · 25/03/2009 19:47

Pav - ring the midwife and get it checked out imo

Joycey29 · 25/03/2009 19:48

Doesn't sound like you are having fun! I would say some of these could easily be pregnancy related but as you are in quite a bit of pain I would see GP and get reassurance.

thatsnotmymonster · 25/03/2009 19:52

Shoulder tip pain is actually a symptom of an ectopic pregnancy. Don't want to scare you as it may just be you have alot of aches and pains but best to get properly checked out.

Hope all goes well.

traceybath · 25/03/2009 19:55

Agree shoulder pain in early pregnancy can be serious - call nhs direct straight away.

pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/03/2009 19:58

Shoulder pain is across the whole of my upper back. Is that shoulder tip? that pain is not stabbing, more really tight bunched up muscles, and painful to touch.

No tummy pain though? Would I not have tummy pain with eptopic pg?

thatsnotmymonster - I am not having trouble breathing though, or coughing? the lower back pain catches my breath occasionally but more to do with the pain than inability to breathe.

Jimmy! How is that gorgeous boy of yours?

I will ring midwife first thing in the morning, if she is in. Thanks all...

Joycey - funnily enough, other than shoulder/back pain, I have felt surprisingly ok! I knew I was pg due to serious MS for a week at 4 weeks, that passed, then just the usual stuff, tiredness etc, and today for the first day, sickness walloped me with a proper stick!

I just don't feel very well today I guess. Aches, pains and a bit sorry for myself . I should know all this stuff though, been pg before!

You may as well get chcked over Pavlov.

Tummy pain is not necessarily present with an ectopic. I don't know if shoulder pain of the type you describe can be a symptom (having never had that myself) but I do know that pain can refer all over the place and so it is worth getting checked.

It is probably just your hormones, but best to make sure.

pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/03/2009 20:09

wikipedia says shoulder pain is onimous as can indicate internal bleeding if ectopic, also said lower back pain a sign of internal bleeding.

I do not know if I am just being an overcautious worrier, and should wait to see gp tomorrow morning see what he says, or if I should get it checked out this evening? I don't have midwife no to call her yet...

OP posts:
pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/03/2009 20:09

ominous, not onimous!

OP posts:
BabyBaby123 · 25/03/2009 20:12

i would go this evening, to be on the safe side. it's probably fine but if it's not you don't want to be leaving it as things can quickly turn serious.

MrsHappy · 25/03/2009 20:12

Yes, with ectopics the shoulder tip pain is caused by blood leaking out and irritating the diaphragm.

Anyway, get your midwife/GP to send you for a quick scan. Then you can stop worrying.

georgimama · 25/03/2009 20:14

Go to A&E or ring delivery suite at hospital now. Get yourself scanned tonight - there is no point spending all night worrying about this.

pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/03/2009 20:16

ok, i don't think epu is open now, and think it is referral only. I will see gp first thing and ask for a scan to check it all out.

For now I am going to attempt to put DD to bed without a fuss and turn of chitty chitty bang bang, get some rest. DH has gone out, seeing as I am ill and in bed!

OP posts:
BabyBaby123 · 25/03/2009 20:19

do you have an out of hours number for your GP? You can just turn up at A&E, it doesn't have to be EPAU

georgimama · 25/03/2009 20:20

No, not EPU, the delivery suite. As in where women give birth. They will be able to scan you.

Get DH home. This could be nothing, it could be very serious. There is no way of knowing until you get a scan. Please do something about this now.

pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/03/2009 20:21

I will take some paracetamol, put DD to bed, then give it half hour. If it is not settling with paracetamol in the next half hour or so, I will call DH and tell him we are going on an outing. I might call a friend see if she can come and look after DD who I would prefer not to wake, then DH can take me.

pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/03/2009 20:35

pavlov, is shoulder pain worse when you lie down? have you rung the hospital?

pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/03/2009 20:41

it is painful to lie on i guess. It sort of reminds me of that back pain you can get, you know when you have been on your feet all day and you lie down and your back kills for a few seconds in an 'aaaaaaaaah' pain type of way then subside? You know that one? (or is that just me?), but without the full subsiding, or it goes a bit, but not fully.

No not spoken to hospital, I had, up til this evening sort of trying to ignore it really, putting it down to normal pg pains, which I am sure it is.

OP posts:
OracleInaCoracle · 25/03/2009 20:45

it probably is, but you really, REALLY need to get shoulder pain checked out at this stage of pg. iirc i had both lower back pain and shoulder pain with my ep. at 6w4d. dont want to scare you, i really dont but you need to be seen tonight.

pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/03/2009 20:46

ok just read what to expect when you are expecting and vomiting is a symptom (it says can be hard to distinguish between this and morning sickness symptoms). Although I had sickness earlier at 4 weeks, it passed until this morning, and today I was sick all day. So, think we are going to head up to A&E when DH gets home.

OP posts:
traceybath · 25/03/2009 20:48

good luck and i'm glad you're going to get checked out - i could feel a virtual shake coming on . . .

i'm a classic person for ignoring stuff but as everyone has said shoulder pain can be a sign of an ectopic.
