Can braxton hicks be quite painful as well as just uncomfortable?

This is my second pg and the BH started earlier than they did when I was pg with DD. They have just been slightly uncomfortable. Today though for the last couple of hours I have been having regular BH and they are really quite painful, like actual period cramps, with back pain as well.
I am having to stop what I am doing and get my breathing in check to get through them.

BTW insert, I didn't want to come across sounding like some alternative health guru, just that acidophillus has really worked for me and my dc when we've had to take antibiotics.

Came on to this thread as I have horrid Braxton Hicks but this is my 5th pregnancy, they have been worse each time. You're much more aware of them in the 2nd pregnancy onwards and I find they can be quite strong, especially if I've been doing a lot. So try and take it easy!

I can feel it starting again , luckily DH is home early today so I can chill out.

I think I have overdone it, but the house was a tip when I can back and downstairs needed vacuuming, DH had left all his pots and pans out on the side in the kitchen and I couldn't be arsed to do it last night so I left them for this morning

I am off for a bath now DD is napping so that should help.

I had tonsilitis and a UTI around 20 weeks into my second pregnancy and had terrible BH. Totally took me by surprise, as didn't have a single one with my first pregnancy. They eased a bit once I was better (had to get anti-b's), but started up strongly again between 26-34 weeks, when I was running around a lot. Rest was the only thing that eased them.

Rest up as much as possible and keep an eye on them - anything really painful should be checked out again. Don't worry about seeming paranoid, either. Best to be on the safe side.

Just picked up on your thread wittynickname. I am 38 weeks and have had bh since 15 weeks. They are quite worrying arent they and can be quite intense. With my first pregnancy they would start up whenever i did anything apart from resting. I could not even hang out the washing and gave up work at 30 weeks.

There is a definate pattern and they tend to be worse if you have been busy or overdoing it. Its so frustrating as you cant sit down all day! and i found that i had so much i wanted to do, that i couldnt do.

This pregnancy they have been quite strong at times, and i make sure i rest every afternoon for at least an hour , put my feet up and chill. A bath is a great idea too.

Best of luck

The bath has helped, I have just taken 2 paracetamol and DD is still napping so I am going to have a cuppa and a lounge on the sofa for a bit (might even have some of DH's yummy choc chip cookies)

Thanks everyone.

Okay I have done next to nothing today other than empty and fill the dishwasher and even that brought on BH lol.

Seriously though I am in agony with my tummy at the mo, the painkillers are not helping at all. May go and have yet another bath to see if that helps.

that really does NOT sound good to me hunny... please ring delivery suite again... you cant take any chances at this stage. I know its a nightmare if you have togo in again.. but better to be safe than sorry... AGONY is NOT good.... please please ring them ?? NOW xxxx

jkb · 08/03/2009 19:10

just re read your post.. this may have gone to your kidneys?? I had a kidney infection & it hurts bad... & maybe you need different antibiotics?? either way..agony is not good & you need to be sorted out my love xxx

insertwittynicknameHERE · 08/03/2009 19:17

The bath has helped a bit, I can take some more pain killers at 8pm so I will wait until after I have taken them and if it is still there I will call the ward.

I feel so bad having to bother them though, surely they have better things to do like see to women who are actually giving birth.

Thank you jbk.

UTI's can cause contraction like pains. When you see someone make sure they test your wee.

jkb · 08/03/2009 19:28

ok hunny.... well please keep me informed... i feel worried about you... I really think you are just as important as the lady's acvtually giving birth!! you really are.. to be having pains like that is not good..not atal & so you MUST NOT feel bad about contacting them.. in fact, i think they would be annoyed with you for not contacting them... are the pains still coming & going?? xx

insertwittynicknameHERE · 08/03/2009 19:36

Thank you.

The pains are very much like they were on Wednesday when they started but in all honesty not as intense on the BH and period type pain side. My lower back on the other hand is pure agony.

DH is here and keeps looking over at me with such a worried look on his face and I hate to worry him.

I am hoping it is more stress related, as I have had the week from hell with DD (15mo) she has been rushed in to the hospital no less than 3 times this week. I have been ill with a viral infection and a cough. It has just generally been a bad week.

I am feeling baby kick for England though, so that can only be a good sign cant it, proper big kicks right in my bladder.

jkb · 08/03/2009 19:41

baby kicking is great..
But I really am concerned about your pain... & it sounds as if your hubby is too... Im so sorry to hear about your DD.. I do hope shes ok... I have a 3 year ols DS & I too am in bits worried about him.. he has a genitic condition thats really playing him up at the moment & all I can think about is him.. im 36 weeks pregnant & this poor baby isent getting a look in ..... however...stress would NOT give you that type of pain...& all you need is for YOU to get really really sick & have to have a long stay in hospital hunny?? what will DD do then? I know we all put our children first ..but if you are ill... you wont be there for her?! Ring them please xx

jkb · 08/03/2009 19:42

sorry about my awful spelling & the mistakes.. I too should check before submiting!! ha ha

insertwittynicknameHERE · 08/03/2009 19:49

So sorry to hear about your DS jkb, it is so consuming when they are poorly you just cannot get t out of your mind can you.

I know what you mean about lo not getting a look in when you are worrying about your DC, I feel embarrassed to say but sometimes I forget I am even pg . it is not until I get 5 minutes or sit down or feel lo kicking that I remember. We have so much more on our plate with subsequent pregnancies than we did with our first pg.

I will ring them in an hour if the pain is still there, I am going to take 2 paracetamol at 8pm (took the last lot at 4pm) and I will give it half an hour to kick in and if there is no improvement in the pain I will call them.

OP posts:
jkb · 08/03/2009 19:52

ok hunny.... fingers crossed you feel better when you have had them.... I will keep checking this thread tonight to see if you are better... if you are going in or do ring them & you can manage it, do please let me know... thinking of you xx

jkb · 08/03/2009 21:09

Its ten past 9 hunny... any better ??? xxxxx

insertwittynicknameHERE · 09/03/2009 05:10

I felt much better after taking the paracetamol and falling asleep on the sofa. I am still sore but not in agony. I have an appointment today for a rescan and then on to see my consultant so I am going to speak to him about it all.

thankyou jkb, I really appreciate your thoughts.

OP posts:
Nemoandthefishes · 09/03/2009 05:14

glad they are better
I have had bad BH especially if I have been really busy/overdoing it.
With DD1[2nd baby] they were really bad, surprisingly enough as yet no.4 hasnt been as bad

insertwittynicknameHERE · 09/03/2009 05:19

I hardly got them at all when pg with DD, and not until I was well into 30+ weeks. I was kinda shocked when I started getting them at about 12 ish weeks with this one and really strong.

So do the pregnancies get easier when you get to number four? I have always wanted four dc but at the minute I am thinking of sticking with two lol.

OP posts:
Nemoandthefishes · 09/03/2009 05:23

lol dont know about easier..different...this one has been easier on the joints for some reason although harder because I have to chase arounf after 5,3 and 2yr old all day.

Nemoandthefishes · 09/03/2009 05:24

and of course there is the joyful insomnia or if you are ill there are still others to look after...

insertwittynicknameHERE · 09/03/2009 05:28

lol nemo, I can sympathize with the insomnia and the being ill but still having DC to look after.

DD has had a viral infection for about 5 days this week, on top of D&V, on top of 3 emergency hospital visits. I have been ill with viral infection and cough and then all the painful BH.

It doesn't stop does it.
