Yet ANOTHER thread. Like it says - those of you who've waved bye bye to 39 come and say Hi to us instead.

We think that 40 is the new 20, cyber cake is the new weight-watchers and older mums rock

So, if you fit that description come and play with us. We like cake, gossip an occasional luke warm debate and a good moan! Oh and we're also very friendly and supportive!

OK everyone.....take it away x

Ah Triggles hope your little one wakes up brighter and ready to be force-fed bottles of water! It's horrible when they go all lethargic and poorly; really scary. DD never ever got a temperature - she's 10 and I think she's only had 2 high temps in her entire life - so when DS was one of those children who would suddenly burn up to 102 even if they have a cold, I was constantly stricken with panic and would stay up all night, convinced he was going to get meningitis. Then he'd wake up right as rain while I'd be a zombie all the next day. Fortunately he's grown out of it.

Hope everyone gets some kip, nighty night.

johnworf · 27/02/2009 00:38

Just managed to get into bed. Yawn. Been stripping all evening. No, haven't got myself a second evening job. Getting walls ready for plastering tomorrow morning. Can think of better ways to spend an evening.

triggles hope your LO is feeling much better tomorrow. It's such a worry when they're poorly

Hoping to get some sleep soon but I think I've stayed up waaaaaaay past my normal bedtime and now I'm just not tired. I know I will be tomorrow though

Tee2072 · 27/02/2009 08:05

Darn it JW I was looking forward to hearing about your new career.

Well, I slept well, which is good, and of course today is my day off, which is better. Very achy, but baby has been very active, so not worried about that any more.

Off to the farmer's market in a little while and I may go shoe shopping. Gosh, my life is so difficult today.

jeanjeannie · 27/02/2009 09:39

morning all. Done the nursery run and now waiting for MIL to take Verity swimming. Oh and we've had all the wood for the fence delivier - Iris liked that very much - timber swinging on a big crane!

Running around like a loon today.

tee a farmer's market sounds a most agreeable way to spenda Friday.

jw enjoy the the plasterers - that's always fun

triggles Hope the night went smoothly and DS picks up today.

JJ wow . All go in your house. Not much excitement here unless you like watching a man waving his arms around a wall

I love farmer's markets and there's lots around these parts but I've not been to one in ages. Another couple of months and me and the girl will be on our motorbike and sidecar like the two fat ladies, just looking for adventure (and farmer's markets) tee I take it your knee has mended if you're off galivanting?

tee sorry to disappoint you. I just about had the energy to put my slippers on this morning, let alone do a sexy dance to get anything off. One piece of trivia I picked up on my jaunt to the states, pasties here are tasty comestibles. Not so in the US. They are what strippers wear over their nipples. OOOh lala. That could cause mucho confusion in Greggs stateside (what a concept that would be!)

I've started taping Homes under the Hammer. I'm very, very, very, sad in the extreme. I know! I hold my hands up freely. Even DH looked at me sideways when I told him.

Spent some time ebaying last night. Car seat going plus other bits of baby things. Have to rid this house of clutter! I've decided now that all the junk objects d'art are boxed and in the loft, I'm going to leave most of them there. I rather like the minimalist look

Enjoy your break JJ sans LO's.

triggles, mrsb and hedgepig, your LO's any better today? mrsb are you any better today?

Triggles · 27/02/2009 10:16

johnworf oh I like watching Homes under the Hammer as well - it's neat to see what they do with the homes - and sometimes gives us ideas for our own home

mrsb hedgepig hope your LO's are better today

DS is same as last night - lethargic, dehydrated - but we've managed to get a little bit of fluid in him using the medicine syringe - and he had a wet nappy - finally!!! Don't think he'll be even near to food until at least tomorrow. We had to cancel DD's surgery for tomorrow (in Bristol) as there's no way we can take DS all that way in the car like this. He's sleeping now, but we'll be back to pushing fluids as soon as he wakes up.

Tabitha8 · 27/02/2009 10:35

Tee I fell over a few weeks ago. I think Little Tab found it hilarious and can't wait for me to do it again .

johnworf · 27/02/2009 10:40

triggles are you trying him on dioralyte? I think some of the flavours are nice these days

mrsboogie · 27/02/2009 10:44

mornin all

Not too bad here - I am off sick as I am very sneezely and didn't want to be spreading germs. Mr D isn't too bad at the moment.

Am v of tee strolling round the farmers market.

triggles good to hear you got some fluids down him - that's the main thing - hope he feels better soon.

Tee2072 · 27/02/2009 11:39

JW Knee still aches but its such a lovely day here I didn't want to waste it inside!

Market was lovely. Very crowded this morning, mostly with mum's with prams...can't exactly get mad at them as it will be me soon!!

Got some Tuna steak and some Brussels sprouts and some sweet potatoes for tonight's dinner.

trggles good to hear about the wet nappy. Definitely a good sign! Keep pushing those fluids, he'll be right as rain in no time.

LOL over the pasties. You can actually get consumable pasties in some parts of the US. But I do think Greggs would be very amusing over there!!

Triggles · 27/02/2009 12:25

johnworf it's a rehydration fluid (prescription) that is similar. But he doesn't like them - the only thing he is willing to drink is (weak) orange squash, but GP said that is fine, as long as he's getting fluids. We're sneaking in some of the rehydration fluid as and when we can.

Yes, I'm a bit jealous of Tee having a lovely jaunt around the market as well! We're going in to town on Monday, hopefully DS will be better by then. I need to get out of the house to somewhere other than a medical facility!

I've gotten the blood testing stuff. I'm finding testing 6 times in one day difficult to work alongside having 4+ smaller meals per day rather than 3 meals, especially when they say I should be testing before each meal and then 2hrs afterwards. And is there a bad low level? As they didn't really say and I forgot to ask.

Tee2072 · 27/02/2009 12:30

For me triggls anything below about 3.2 makes me feel woozy, headachy and off. So then I get to eat chocolate!

jeanjeannie · 27/02/2009 12:54

triggles that's good about the wet nappy - sounds like the syringe is the way to go. I'd not realised your DD was due for surgery - blimey, it's all go at Triggles Towers!

JW homes under the hammer is hilarious - that bloke's clothes - those jackets....those slacks! And the woman - her hair - it never moves!

tee Ooooo, tuna, my fave...see you around 6.30 then

Awww, sympathies to mrsB over at snot-towers

I went to garden centre while Verity was swimming and got a Witch hazel at a third of the price - I'm thrilled as they're darned expensive It's soooo nice here - really warm and sunny

OP posts:
Triggles · 27/02/2009 13:10

Snot-towers. What a lovely picture. That describes my head cold aptly!

Tee Thanks - mine was 3.4 when I checked it 2hrs after breakfast. So I was just wondering. How often do you test? I'm still trying to marry their schedule for testing with my schedule for eating!

Tee2072 · 27/02/2009 13:14

triggles I test 7 times a day. Before each meal, one hour after each meal and just before bed. I don't test before or after a snack.

And I am pretty sure the docs say anything under 3.5 is too low, so if you are 3.4 two hours after eating, you are approaching hypo. Are you on meds or insulin or anything?

Do you have a phone number to call with questions? When I was first put on insulin I called my numbers in every day. And I still call a few times a month, between Endo appointments, as my insulin needs change.

johnworf · 27/02/2009 13:15

triggles why are you testing before and after meals? You normally alternative each day - one day being before a meal, the next after a meal. You'll have no fingers left if you're doing it before and after! I'd clarify this information as it doesn't sound right to me. Never had a low reading to go off I'm afraid. All mine were well over at least 7.

mrsb hope you're dosing yourself up. Night Nurse is fab (so Mr Worf tells me) but it zonks you out so you'll have to get your OH's signed consent to get up with D in the night if you take it

Well I have an action packed day before me. So far we've been imprisoned in the bedroom while the plasterer does his magic. My bed is covered in toys and dirty bibs Thank goodness she's gone for a nap! Her room is tidier than mine. This afternoon I'm taking my curtains to the cleaners as they're long, heavy and lined so no way will they go in my machine. Dog is currently having his beautification at the groomers (sad when your dog gets our more than you do) so he'll have to be picked up (taxi for spud). DH is currently with some financial advisor as we're going to switch mortgage providers. No sign of him on the horizon yet. So, as triggles said, it'd be nice to get out other than to see a GP or go to hospital.

JJ witch hazel is lovely. I'm very envious.

We have rain here today. Even if it was nice and sunny I couldn't get the pram out as it's right at the back of the dining room under a mountain of crap

johnworf · 27/02/2009 13:16

I phoned in my numbers every Monday morning unless my readings started shooting up over the 6 even with insulin. Diabetic clinic at the hospital should have given you information, a booklet to record numbers and a phone number.

Tee2072 · 27/02/2009 13:18

I am really surprised you didn't test before and after every meal JW. Alternating days doesn't seem all that useful to me.

Obviously different doctors do it differently!

Triggles · 27/02/2009 13:34

They told me I need to test 6 times per day, 3 days per week. The 6 times is just before and 2hrs after each meal. But then she tells me if you have a biscuit (or snack) 90 minutes after your meal, then you test the second test 2 hours after THAT. I'm not on any meds or anything.

I had tea, cornflakes with milk, and a pear for breakfast. It was 4.6 before breakfast and 3.4 two hours afterwards.

They didn't say anything about what to do if it was low or what "too low" was. I guess they figure if I'm not on meds, that my biggest problem is the numbers being too high.

Triggles · 27/02/2009 13:36

I thought only testing 3 days per week was a bit odd, as doesn't that leave room for you to be very careful what you eat on test days and be bad without seeing the results on non-test days?

mrsboogie · 27/02/2009 13:41

its nice here too but I can't go out as it would look a bit odd if I was seen out and about. Mr D won't even take a bottle now but apart from that he seems fine, in good cheer and all chatty. I had several hot whiskies last night jw and they made me feel a lot better! Just waiting for it to be a respectable hour of the day so I can have another one. Daddy had to do a lot of the night stuff and wasn't happy as I stole his side of the bed and left him to the cot side.

Just been reading the weaning thread for purée lovers. Any blw chat is getting short shrift - gosh I read some of the blw stuff as well and they say that you have to expect nothing but gagging and retching and puking for weeks until the baby gets the hang of it. I. Could. Not. Be. Arsed.

However am shocked to read that all these 6 month babies drink 9oz bottles. D never has more than 5 or 6. Also they say you can give 6 month old toast fingers to eat. Is that not a bit young? So far D only has pureed fruit or veg, mostly Hipp stuff as he won't eat what I produce. he is only 24 weeks anyway so I'm not going to really push it till the 26 week mark.

ermintrude13 · 27/02/2009 13:51

You ladies with diabetes who have to keep testing - what a pain! Sending sympathy and feeling fortunate not to find my way through the maze of different medical advice. Triggle hope you become an old hand soon.

mrsb whiskies sound very sensible . The sun is very nearly past the yard-arm, you can have another one soon.

Re toast fingers - depends on individual babies - especially teeth. Mine both had 4 teeth by 6 months and were onto rice cakes/breadsticks by then but not all are. If they're grabbing for bread/toast and can cope with a little mushed-up bit without gagging/choking you can take it further. But no need to force it if Darragh is happy with his purees and milk.

Can't help on the milk as never used formula - when I was at work my DD had 3 x 4oz bottles expressed milk per day (8-6) which always looked puny next to the enormous bottles of formula the other babies were having, but she thrived. DS refused any milk from anyone but me so had NO MILK at nursery for 3 days a week from 5 months old but boy, did he make up for it out of hours. If baby D is thriving and not begging for more I wouldn't worry.

Triggles · 27/02/2009 14:06

Okay, have done my 2hr past lunch test and it's 4.3. I guess that's okay then.

mrsboogie · 27/02/2009 14:19

Thanks ermintrude D has absolutely no interest in food at all - he gobbles up the fruit purées when given them but I don't think he would ever ask for food! I guess the blwers would say he wasn't ready.

it does seem to be different for everyone re the blood sugar testing triggles I started by being told to only check before meals for a couple of weeks then they told me to do it one hour after eating and when I went back with my little notebook of readings I was told off for not doing it before AND after. But my readings were fine although higher than yours - if I had had fruit and conrflakes it would have put me too high. You must be very borderline at this stage.

jeanjeannie · 27/02/2009 14:21

Gosh yes, I second ermintrude the diabetes malarky sounds such a pain If you've not got enough to worry about just being preggie!

mrsB I started giving Verity finger food (mainly roast or steamed veg strips) when her bottom teeth came through. Before then she was just gumming stuff and still hungry and I didn't have time to wait the hour and 20 mins it took her to suck on a carrot

We're happy with smashed up stuff - I don't do it very smooth and picks at things herself. I think each LO is individual. I have seen a BLW baby go for it big style - but the gagging does scare me....espcially after having seen Iris turn blue and start to lose conciousness when she choked - t'was horrific. DP turned her upside down and put his fingers down her throat - lots of tears and frightened relatives that day.

I know this sounds weird but I can't use baby food from a jar. Not for any other reason than I've got a bit of a phobia. Seriously, I have a thing about food in squeezy tubes (makes me shake) and food in jars...I can't even do a bottle of pasta sauce without feeling odd. I know, I know... it's all most queer.
