Yet ANOTHER thread. Like it says - those of you who've waved bye bye to 39 come and say Hi to us instead.

We think that 40 is the new 20, cyber cake is the new weight-watchers and older mums rock

So, if you fit that description come and play with us. We like cake, gossip an occasional luke warm debate and a good moan! Oh and we're also very friendly and supportive!

OK everyone.....take it away x

Those triple blood tests do tend to err on the side of giving false positives (so to speak) but it makes sense Triggles not to have an amnio if you would intend to carry on regardless of the outcome.

Was reading recently that more children are born with Downs' since ante natal screening came in than ever before because attitudes have changed so much.

MUM41plus5 · 24/02/2009 19:02

Thats two down, all tucked up one to go

jw I have seen you on your profile pics just after K was born, I don't quite understand why you need to take this Xenical, you do not look over weight to me?

triggles Its good to hear you so confident in your choices!

Triggles · 24/02/2009 19:02

mrsb I didn't know that last bit - that more children were being born with Downs since screening came in.

MUM41plus5 · 24/02/2009 19:08

mrsb you too seen your pics too, why? I am very much the same as you with regards to restricted calories, the more strict I am the easier it is and if you find the wine equivelant of Xenical, do please let me know

mrsboogie · 24/02/2009 19:13

seems the numbers initially went down and are now back up triggles article here

mrsboogie · 24/02/2009 19:17

mum41 for every pic of me looking decent there are about 75 with my triple chin captured in all its wobbly glory. My BMI is ahem 34 I am quite tall so can carry quite a lot of excess weight but if the docs are to be believed my current weight is lining me up for all sorts of health probs. I was warned that the weight and the GD and the family history mean it is only a matter of time before I develop diabetes if I don't sort myself out.

Think jw is in a similar (although smaller) boat.

Tee2072 · 24/02/2009 19:39

Take it from a woman who developed type II due to being overweight...its must less hassle to lose the weight.

I would much rather be getting much less antenatal care and not have diabetes. Really I would.

I could control it with diet (before I became pregnant) for 2 years because I lost 2.5 stone in the first 8 months after being diagnosed. I gained a bit of it back, but my diabetes was under control, with an A1C of 6.4 (under 7 is non-diabetic, BTW) with just diet and exercise.

It can be done. Do it!

duchesse · 24/02/2009 19:40

There was a lovely sister's eye view of having a sibling with Down's in Saturday's Guardian. Here. I imagine her parents may have found it more stressful that she did though!

MUM41plus5 · 24/02/2009 19:42

I am shocked and surprised, like you say, you must carry it well, I find calorie counting has been the best way for me to loose the weight after I had the twins, it does also mean I can have the odd weekend off here and there and still get back on track, luckily I do love fruit and veg so handy for feeling like I've had a big full plate at dinner and the fruit comes in handy for those snacks during the day, I'm quite short at 5.3 but have gotten my bmi down to 26.7 so not too far to go to get below the 25, I know 25 is the upper end for bmi but it puts me back in a size 12 and any less and I begin to look drawn and old so no lower for me its nice to know I'm probably not the only one having a good for you meal tonight (cumberland pie for me) and plenty veg it does mean I enjoy it so much more when we do out for dinner!

ermintrude13 · 24/02/2009 19:52

Triggles my NT scan measured 1.5cm at 12wks 6 days and that plus age calculation (I was a mere 41 then) made it 322:1 which is low risk - a 99.7% chance of having a baby without Downs. So I didn't have the DS blood test, and it sounds like with your measurement you wouldn't have been advised to either. I'm not sure how high the odds would have had to be for me to consider amnio, but like you, finding out would have been as a preparation rather than with a view to terminate. There were no soft markers at the 20 wk scan. Hope your next scan goes well and that you're not too anxious in the meantime.

Tee when my DD left her bumbag on the Staten Island ferry last year the security guy radioed across that she'd lost her 'fanny pack' and she was mortified! . It contained $50, a subway pass and a $40 Barnes and Noble card and it was handed in, so we felt very warm about NYC!

I didn't poo in either of my labours - got rid of it all in the early stages of contractions, luckily. I had my DD in a pool and DH asked the MW what the sieve at the side was for and then wished he hadn't...

mrsboogie · 24/02/2009 19:55

oh duchesse I read that article, very positive

tee Did you ever read about that oldish American guy developed that diet that he claims cured him of diabetes? I suppose what he is doing is controlling it with a very strict diet.

mum41 I am the same - if I was the weight of some of these celebrities who like me are 5 ft 10 and claim to be nine or ten stone - if I was ten stone I would look like death walking. I just want to be under the 25 mark.

duchesse · 24/02/2009 19:58

My BMI is 24.6 and I certainly do not look like a skeleton. Am much happier nearer the 22 mark to be honest...

Tee2072 · 24/02/2009 20:00

Mental note, when making pancakes, don't use the pan that doesn't heat evenly! They were half burnt and half raw...next year I'll buy them prepackaged!!

Or better yet, do an American pancake, which I think is much nicer!

mrsb you can reverse Type II, but you have to lose the weight and keep it off. I am hoping to go back to diet controlled once baba is born!

ermintrude13 · 24/02/2009 20:14

duchesse My BMI was pushing 25 before I conceived and I was carrying a good stone too much, and 1.5 stone more than a couple of years ago, when I was exercising regularly. I'm 5'4" and quite small build - though 'curvy' - and feel that around the 22 mark, weighing 9 to 9.5 stone instead of 10st 3, would be better for me. And I'd still be 'well-covered.' It's such a vague measurement, and doesn't take into account build and muscle, so that's why they suggest a range for 'ideal'.

That last stone is a bugger to shift though. I shall turn my thoughts to it when the baby is weaning...

mrsboogie · 24/02/2009 20:38

If I was 10 and a half stone my BMI would be 20 and I would look terrible - at about 11 and a half stone it would be 23 which would be ideal. So yes it really does depend on your frame, height etc.

johnworf · 24/02/2009 20:46

Funny thing BMI. I'm 5'2" and mine y'day was 30.6, fully clothed, late afternoon. Yet my GP who is 6'2" tells me his BMI is the same as mine yet he looks fab! Not overweight at all. He did say that when you're taller you have much more frame to spread the fat over unlike myself who is small and the opposite effect.

Like mrsb said, there are many pics of me with more chins than the Hong Kong phone directory. I think after I had K I didn't eat very much as I was always at the hospital or travelling there plus it was summer and the unit was baking hot. I just drank a lot of water and I probably lost some more weight doing so. Because of my short stature even an extra stone makes me look overweight.

SiL isn't speaking to us apparently. DH only told me today but she announced this last week. Thought it had been lovely and quiet around here of late

duchesse · 24/02/2009 20:49

I'm 5ft6 and 10.5 stone. Ideally I should be 9 or just over- that's the weight I feel best at.

Tee2072 · 24/02/2009 20:52

Now that is good news jw.

BMI is bull. Most athletes are considered overweight based on BMI, because muscle weighs more than fat. It doesn't take into account body build or mass.

mrsboogie · 24/02/2009 20:55

an obese GP? tsk tsk

so your SiL told you that she isn't speaking to you? is she ten?

jeanjeannie · 24/02/2009 21:23

Just finished a plate full of pancakes - gawd knows what my BMI is now

I'm 5ft 5 and have always been a size 10 but in 2001 I had a stressful year and went down to a size 8 and was 8st 10 - I looked awful. I caught every cold going, ended up with flu and pleurisy - and now I look back at the pictures and I just looked ill and thin and yet that was in the 'normal' range and I think I looked anything but normal! I'm back in my size 12 jeans and my BMI is 27 - so still overweight - ho hum

mrsB if I had you're height I'd be spot on

ermintrude yep, I agree that last stone is a bugger to shift *helps self to more Minstrels
jw hahahah, your SIL in BONKERS!!

johnworf · 24/02/2009 21:25

No she isn't mrsb but you wouldn't know it the way she acts

BMI is indeed a weird thing and I think you can get really hung up numbers when really, all you have to do is look in the mirror with no clothes on - I'm avoiding mirrors and cameras at the mo as they are just not doing me any favours

The funny thing with this particular GP I see is that everytime I go say for b/p check, he'll say wow, yours is better than mine (even when it's up). He said to me y'day 'your fasting blood test is better than mine' So let's get this right, he's possibly got diabetes, he's overweight and his b/p is up. Not a very good example he's setting is it? Still he's nice enough and gets away with it.

There was a very basic drawing on his desk yesterday and laughingly I said to him 'oooh what's that, dare I ask? It looks like a knobbly knee'. I was thinking it looked like a willy with a boil on it actually but was far too polite. 'ah, that's an aortic aneurism'. Hmmm methinks. You failed art.

mrsb I didn't know until now that alli is xenical but half the dose Well I never.

Where is JJ? Has she drown under her mountain of Costco pastries???

hedgepig · 24/02/2009 21:26

Hey JW that sounds like a result to me did she give any particular reason, or did the pins in the voodoo doll finally see her off?

I used to have a Crystal Tips hair cut in the 80's what amazing things perms were, sadly it was before the age of digital photography so I can not share the look with you.

Triggles you are getting all the stress today ((hugs)) hopefully it will all turn out well and it's good you have a more permanent mw, was she able to help with the GD at all or do you need to see a consultant?

I have just scoffed loads of pancakes, they were rather yummy. Why oh why is the yummy food always full of calories??

OMG Ben is still up (9:30!!!) I must go and put a pillow over his head, settle him down

johnworf · 24/02/2009 21:30

X post JJ. Didn't see you under all those pancakes! I cooked them but of course, didn't taste. Watched DSS spreading nutella on his. Very healthy. No doubt we'll have social services knocking down the door for acts of child cruelty. I'd better not mention him doing his shift down the mine had I? No, best not.

ARRRRRRRRRGh I had a broody moment today. And it was fleeting but scared me nonetheless. No more babies here. Nay, nay, and thrice nay.

johnworf · 24/02/2009 21:33

hahahahaha hedgepig your post made me LOL. Poor Ben. He's deserving social services more than DSS and his mother once had a perm. Fashion crimes too

I think the voodoo doll helped. Basically I've gone out of my way to make her feel as uncomfortable as I could and she's finally got the message. Huzzah! Now she's doing the 'poor me' act but won't wash. Even DH has had enough of her. I'm lovin' it

Off to bed soon so expect to find at least another 4 pages on here in the morning

jeanjeannie · 24/02/2009 21:35

Hahahah hedgepig you could scan in a picture of you in the 80s - there's no excuse you know

jw LOL@ thought of drowning in Costco pastries!

triggles good to hear you've got some continuity coming your way - that'll be really good for you. Please don't worry unduly about the Downs result - I had a 1 in 2 of Downs and Edwards and all was fine My NT fold was almost 4! I think a 1 in 6 is generally Very good and it's hard to get a good picture on age and bloods alone. Reading up on it is a bright idea and you'll probably get more clarity at your 20 wk scan.

MILK NEWS! It arrived at 4.15pm
